This week the children have continued to engage in activities based around Traction Man. They all enjoyed developing their ant team learning power to work in small groups and delegate character parts. There was some brilliant acting from many budding actors and actresses! We all enjoyed watching them perform in class.

In Maths, the children have been learning how to add two numbers using the counting on method using a number line to support them.

Week 10 Blog

This week the children enjoyed listening to and engaging within lots of activities based around the book, Traction Man by Mini Grey.  They retold the story in story parts and imagined what it would be like to be Traction Man. In maths the have continued to explore numbers to ten using a tens frame using counters and making additions. For Anti Bullying week they created a jigsaw and wrote about their different likes. This helped them to understand that everyone is different but each piece creates our class, school and community.IMG_8867 IMG_8868 IMG_8869 IMG_8870 IMG_8864 IMG_8863 IMG_8862 IMG_8861 IMG_8860 IMG_8859 IMG_8858 IMG_8857 IMG_8857 IMG_8856 IMG_8855 IMG_8852 IMG_8850 IMG_8853 IMG_8862 IMG_8866

Week 8 and 9 Blog

Last week the children engaged in outdoor learning activities. They dug up their flower bed and planted new bulbs in time for Spring. This linked to their science learning – seasonal change and plants. There was lots of discussion about if they planted their bulbs up side down or side ways would they still grow?IMG_8824 IMG_8825 IMG_8826 IMG_8827 IMG_8828 IMG_8829 IMG_8832 IMG_8835

This week the children have been learning all about regrouping numbers to 10 using a whole and two part model. There was lots of discussion based around this and they enjoyed the hands on practical approach opportunity it provided.

Week 7 Blog

Jamaica, Jamaica! was Year 1’s One World Week theme and they absolutely loved it! From finding out all about the country, its landscape, human and physical features, weather and food to discovering famous people from the island and much more. They enjoyed painting the native Hummingbird, cooking rock buns and listening each afternoon to a story read in Patois. They explored the atlas to discover its position in the world and were tickled when they found out it was shaped like a guinea pig! This morning they celebrated all their new learning and understanding with their parents.  Well done Year 1 for all your achievements! Have a safe and peaceful half-term holiday and we look forward to seeing you when you return!

Week 6 Blog

This week the children learnt about the importance of friendship. They were inspired by the book, Imaginary Fred. This lead them to think about what qualities they would like their own imaginary friend to have and they made a wanted poster to advertise for one. During art sessions they made an imaginary friend and even put on their own puppet shows! In science they carried out a test to find out which material was the most absorbent for the caretaker to use. They had lots of fun finding out and learnt  about the importance of a fair test.  Lastly, Year 1 made Father Shaun a thank you card for our recent visit to the church where he baptised the baby. We also made a 60th Birthday card to Father Shaun – Happy 60th Birthday!

Week 5 Blog

This week the children visited the Potters Bar Museum to support their current topic, Now and Then. They got the chance to listen to Terry who talked about toys from the past. The children were thrilled when they were given the opportunity to play with them! They were fascinated with the character telephones from the 70s and 80s. A big thank you to all the parent volunteers on the day! The children have really transitioned into Year 1 children. They are learning their spellings and are very keen to write these down in booklets  each week  – Well done Year 1
