Reception Class Week Beginning 16.1.23

Despite the temperature being so cold this week, the children have enjoyed playing in the outside area, where earlier on in the week, they went on an ice hunt, explored the properties and beauty of ice under the magnifying glass and experimented with ways to dissolve it.

As part of the whole school Other Faith Week, Reception class learnt about the Jewish religion and in particular the Shabbat. The Shabbat is the Jewish Day of Rest. It happens each week from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. During Shabbat, Jewish people remember the story of creation from the Torah where God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th day.

The children also learnt about how Jewish people go on a pilgrimage to The Western Wall in Jerusalem and how, when they get there, they write special messages to God and insert them into this special wall. Inspired by this new learning, the children wrote their own messages to God and built Western Walls from a variety of construction.

The class have built on their maths learning from last week, by finding different ways of grouping 5 into three groups and recording their learning. They were also challenged to work out missing quantities, when part of five was hidden.

In English, Reception’s learning was derived from the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children had fun hot seating the characters from the story and learning The Three Bears Rap. They also made ‘wanted’ posters, character masks, puppets,  furniture for the bears and even wrote apology letters on behalf of Goldilocks.

On Monday, the class received a letter from the Natural History Museum asking the children to look after a precious dinosaur egg. The adults in Reception were dubious and a bit worried, as the last time they looked after an egg, it cracked, the dinosaur inside escaped and this triggered a country wide hunt for it!!!

The children persuaded the adults that it would be fine and that they could take care of it. They wrote back to the museum accepting their request and on Wednesday, it was delivered!

Reception class were so excited!

The children quickly went about writing signs telling people not to touch the egg. They also designed and built display cabinets to keep it protected, as it is so fragile.

The children have also been inspired to make their own dinosaur worlds and have been using the small world dinosaurs to make up stories in them.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 9.1.23

Happy New Year!

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and restful break.

It was lovely to see the children and their families on Monday morning. The whole class have returned to school healthy, happy and with a great attitude towards their learning!

Reception began their week by learning about the Epiphany. They thought about what gift they will give to the world this year and made crowns, which they wore to the special whole school Epiphany assembly.

Our new whole class learning focus this half term is, Time- Past, Present and Future. This week the children have been thinking about the story ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?’ by Debbie Gilori.

You can watch the Debbie Gilori reading her book here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T3vvAa-qTs

The children went on to think about the best and worst time they have ever had. They also made clocks and watches from a variety of materials, they learnt about day and night and discussed the things they do as part of their daily routine. They had lots of fun playing the game ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?’ too.

The weather has not been at all kind to us this week, so as soon as it was dry enough on Thursday, we took the maths lesson outside onto the KS2 playground. The children have been learning about the composition of the number five and had lots of fun using the hoops and beanbags to find different ways of making the number. The children learnt how to say a number sentence and some children even wrote some number sentences down, when they got back to class.

It looks like we are due to have a very cold week next week. Please ensure that your child is dressed warmly and in particular has a named hats and pair of gloves.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 12.12.22

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!

Reception class have had a very exciting week in school which began with a snow day on Monday!

Sadly, many of the Reception children have been poorly this week and attendance on some days was very low. It was with great sadness and disappointment that we had to cancel the class Nativity on Thursday. We are looking forward to leading the whole school in a special Valentines Day assembly, on Friday 10th February.

This week the children have enjoyed: eating Christmas dinner, watching a panto, meeting Father Christmas and partying!

Tonight we have sent home some very tired but happy children!

We’ve really missed the children and staff who have been away this week; we hope to see you all fighting fit on Monday morning!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Snow Day 12.12.22

Dear Reception,

I missed you all last week and I’m looking forward to catching up with you this week!

What a beautiful, snowy sight this morning! I hope you have lots of fun playing in it today.

Here are some some activities that you can do at home today:

Begin by listening to the story of The Snowman by Raymond Briggs (Parents, I always tell the children at the end, that the little boy made the snowman again, the next time it snowed!)

You can watch the animated version here:

After watching The Snowman, if it’s possible, go outside with you special adult and build your own snowman/ snowwoman or even a snow animal! Take pictures and upload them to Tapestry if you can. If it’s not possible to go outside, design your own snowman or collect a little snow on a baking tray and build a miniature one inside. Draw a picture of what your snowman looks like.

Discuss the big question-Does a snowman need clothing? Why? Why not?

If you could fly anywhere with your snowman, where would you go? Draw a picture and use your phonics to write some words to describe the place.

Paint your own snowy picture.

Make prints and trails in the snow outside, using different objects such as cars, dinosaurs, twigs, flowerpots, feet.

Have fun making a snow volcano. Click on the link to show you how.

Have fun making paintings in the snow using food colouring.

You will need a spray or squeezy bottle, some food colouring and some water.

Put a few drops of the food colouring in the bottle and fill it up with cold water.

Go outside and have fun painting the snow!

Just to stress, you are not expected to do all of these activities, they are just some ideas for you to choose from.

Have fun!

Ms Pemberton

Reception Week Beginning 28.11.22

This week, Reception have been learning about Advent and focussing on the meaning of the first candle- Hope.

They listened to the story, The World Made a Rainbow by Michelle Robinson. From missing friends, missing teachers, and missing grandparents, The World Made a Rainbow tackles all of the challenges of life under the recent lock-downs for little ones, while offering hope, comfort, and solidarity. You can listen to this beautiful story below.

Remarkably, very few children in the class remembered Covid 19 or the lock-downs and were fascinated to hear about how the older children in our school had to stay at home and do their learning online!

The class thought about their own hopes and used their phonics to write them down. They then put them in our class ‘jar of hopes’. They also made rainbows from various materials- a worldwide symbol of hope.

On Thursday, we were visited by Bishop John, who began the day by joining the school for a special Advent assembly. He then came to the Reception classroom, where he was treated to two songs from our upcoming Nativity performance. He was very impressed!

The children are looking forward to their performance on Thursday morning. Thank you to all of the parents who have provided their child with undergarments to wear underneath their costume. If you haven’t done so already, please send them in as a matter of urgency.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 21.11.22

This week, Reception have been learning about the Jewish festival of lights- Hanukkah. The word Hanukkah means rededication and commemorates the Jews’ struggle for religious freedom.

After watching the videos above, Reception had an opportunity to explore some Jewish religious artefacts. The children also participated in lots of Hanukkah inspired activities including: creating their own menorah paintings,  making Star of David decorations and constructing their own Torah scrolls!

As a whole class, Reception discussed how they feel when they are alone in the dark and also brainstormed all the different things that give off light!

This week, Reception have also been very busy rehearsing for their upcoming Nativity performance. Please check your child’s book bag for an important letter that went home yesterday about costumes.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 14.11.22

It’s been another busy week of learning in Reception!

This week, the class have taken part in Anti-Bullying Week along with the rest of the school.

The children began the week by listening to the story of The Ugly Duckling and watching Disney’s 1939 adaptation of the story. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re4jlssB3Iw

They also enjoyed singing along with this Ugly Duckling song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=neX_E8Ozf88

They learnt that bullying behaviour has key aspects:

  • It’s hurtful
  • It’s intentional
  • It’s repetitive

They watched this film clip and identified the bullying that took place.

Reception learnt about what they should do if they themselves are being bullied, or if they think that someone else is. They also thought about how they could be a good friend to everyone. The children made friendship cards and pictures and gave them to their friends. Reception also made anti-bullying posters, created homes for the ugly duckling, made masks and retold the story using small world.

As part of Friendship Friday, Reception joined their Year 6 Learning Partners in the November sunshine, for a special karate lesson together. They had so much fun together!

The highlight of the week was an exciting visit from Arthur’s mum Natalia, from Year 6. She is a bus driver and she came to tell the class all about how she helps the local community. She even brought her bus with her and managed to squeeze it through the gates and park it right outside the Reception classroom. Such skill! The children had so much fun exploring the double decker, opening and closing the doors, ringing the bell and sitting in the driver’s seat! Thank you so much to Natalia and Sullivan Buses for this wonderful experience!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 7.11.22

This week, Reception have been learning about Armistice Day and the significance of the poppy. They have been recalling and sharing their own memories with one another and have enjoyed creating their own poppies from a variety of materials.

Today the children joined the rest of the school in observing two minutes silence at 11am. This was followed by a pilgrimage around the school where the children quietly travelled from from class to class to visit each prayer table.

This week, we finished teaching the first set of phonics (phase 2). For the rest of the term, we will be embedding these sounds during our daily phonics sessions. No new sounds will be sent home until after Christmas. Please continue to practise these sounds at home by getting your child to have a go at writing very simple cvc words such as: cat, man, bell, loss, bed, fan, dip etc and please continue to read daily. It is really important that you correct your child’s pencil grip if they are holding it incorrectly and please insist that they form the letters in the way they have been taught; saying the phrase as they write it will help them.

Thank you for your continued support!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Class Week Beginning 31.10.22

This week, Reception have been very busy learning about the Hindu festival of light-Diwali.

The class learnt about how Hindu families from all over the world celebrate this very special festival by: coming together to dance, sing and eat, attending a special service at their temple, decorating their homes with Rangoli patterns, lighting diva lamps and drawing Mehndi patterns on their hands. The class then had a go and creating some of these things themselves.

Here are the firework displays happening in and around Milton Keynes this November - MKFM 106.3FM - Radio Made in Milton Keynes

Remember, remember, the 5th of November,

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

I see no reason

Why gunpowder treason

Should ever be forgot.

Reception Class have also been learning about why we celebrate Bonfire Night and how to keep safe around fireworks and bonfires.

Inspired by this, the children decided to write some Bonfire Night safety posters to educate the older children. These posters have been displayed outside the classroom in the main corridor, where they can be seen and read by the whole school.

Reception also had fun creating their own fireworks art pieces, through painting, printing, drawing, collaging and making 3D models.

Some members of the class even decided to work together to construct  a model of the Houses of Parliament- what a great team effort!

If you are going to a fireworks display at the weekend, have a fantastic time!
