Reception Summer Term Week 1

Alleluia! He is risen!

Welcome back!

We hope you had a joyous time celebrating Easter with your families. It was lovely to see the wonderful, creative Easter gardens, which are now on show in our international garden.

This week, we have been learning about the resurrection story according to Luke. The children worked hard to retell the story in a number of different ways.

On Tuesday afternoon, the class participated in an Easter themed creative workshop with Year 1. They learnt about the symbolism of eggs during Easter time and then made their own to display on the window. They children then went into the Year 1 classroom where they made butterflies, to represent new life.

Congratulations to Mya, who was Baptised on Easter Sunday and looked beautiful!

Reception Spring Term Week 12

On Tuesday, Reception Class joined KS1 in a very special Lenten Act of Worship. As usual, the children made us proud with their excellent behaviour, respect and reverence.

In RE , the children heard the story of the 14 Stations of the cross and then made their own crosses, with a range of different materials.

Our story focus this week has been ‘The Enormous Turnip’. Amongst other things, the children have had lots of fun re-enacting and sequencing the story, creating their own enormous vegetables, writing their own super veg stories and using fruit and vegetables in their art work.

In Maths, Reception have been exploring the many different ways of weighing, comparing and ordering objects.

They have also enjoyed participating in lots of different challenges; such as finding ways to get vegetables out of a box without touching them with their hands and finding the best surface for a toy car to travel over.

Reception Spring Term Week 11

It’s been another busy week in Reception, it’s hard to believe that we are almost two thirds of the way through the year!

In RE this week, the children have been learning about the Last Supper and thinking how we are reminded of this story every week in church when we receive Holy Communion. They also spent a long time examining and talking about the painting, ‘The Last Supper’ by Leonardo Da Vinci, one of the most famous paintings in the world.

With the help of the adults, the children role played receiving Holy Communion themselves.

The children then demonstrated their understanding of the story through role play, writing their own versions, painting the story and building their own Last Supper scenes with junk modelling materials and other large and small construction.

The weather yesterday was glorious and so we took the opportunity to take the PE lesson with Mr Dugan outside. The children enjoyed participating in some team games that focussed on developing their throwing and catching skills.

You should have received an email to activate your Tapestry account on Tuesday. Thank you to the parents who have already activated and have liked and made comments about their child’s learning already!

Please add your own observations and photos- remember only you and the Reception staff can see your child’s account, so don’t worry about getting it wrong! Your observations will help the staff to have an all round picture of your child, which will help when they come to make final judgements against the early Learning Goals at the end of next term.

Reception Spring Term Week 10

In RE this week, Reception have been focussing on Luke’s account of Palm Sunday; when Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem on a donkey. The children demonstrated their understanding of the story through role play, writing their own versions of the story, painting pictures, making palm trees and building their own gates of Jerusalem with small construction.

In Maths, the children have been looking at properties of 2D and 3D shapes, and have been sorting and constructing their own.

The children have also enjoyed listening to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. They have been busy turning the outdoor role play area into a giant’s castle complete with beanstalk, measuring and comparing objects against giant footprints, creating string instruments, writing different endings to the story and building their own castles.

Spring Term Week 8 Reception

What a busy week of learning!

In RE, Reception have been learning about Lent and how we prepare for Easter by praying to bring us closer to God, by giving to others less fortunate than ourselves and by doing kind things for others.

The children wrote their Lenten promises which were used as part of the Lenten assembly on Friday. Reception also took part in a special Lenten Act of Worship with their Year 6 learning partners, which was led by Sofia, Jaineel, Oliver and Claudia.

On Thursday, Reception joined the rest of the school in celebrating World Book Day. They were very excited and proud to show off their costumes alongside the older children and teachers and enjoyed listening to one another as they explained who they had dressed up as and why.

Next week, we are looking forward to British Science week which focusses on the theme ‘Journeys’.

Spring Term Week 7 Reception

Have you ever wondered what happened to the dish and the spoon when they ran away in the nursery rhyme, Hey Diddle, Diddle? This week Reception class found out when they heard the story, ‘The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon’ by Mini Grey. The children had lots of fun thinking and writing about what they would do if they found a big bag of money; ideas ranged from giving it to the poor, to buying a gold Lamborghini! In the story, the dish and the spoon make some poor life decisions and as a result the spoon is put in prison. To re-enact this, Reception decided that they wanted the outside role play area to be a police station, complete with a jail and so they have been very busy working together to create and then play in it.

In RE, the children have learnt about the importance of buying Fairtrade in order to support hardworking farmers, so that they will get fair and better prices for their products, have decent working conditions, be in a position to make their own decisions and control their future and lead the dignified lives that they all deserve. The children then designed their own posters telling everyone to buy Fairtrade. Today, they reinforced their learning by discussing Fairtrade and then drawing the Fairtrade logo with their Learning Partners.

Spring term Week 6 Reception

Well, we are officially half way through our first year of school and to mark it, Reception performed their first ever class assembly today, all about love.

Their teachers were very proud of them all- Well done Reception Class!

As part of the school’s Other Faith Week, Reception have been learning about Judaism. On Tuesday the class participated in a fun, hands-on workshop, where they got to wear and look at lots of symbolic Jewish artefacts.

The class also participated in a Safer Internet workshop, where the children learnt about how to stay safe and what to do if someone is being unkind online.

Spring Term Week 5 Reception

Our story focus this week has been the ‘The Ugly Duckling’. The class have spent lots of time discussing the positive aspects of being different, and recognising and celebrating the similarities and differences between themselves. Inspired by the ending of the story, some of the class decided to make their own flying creations and test them outside!

As part of Safer Internet Day, the children took part of in a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectively, critically and creatively. They each designed a poster saying, ‘Don’t post mean pictures…post this instead’, and drew a picture that had nice content and didn’t require consent from another person.

Our Maths focus this week has been addition, and the children have had lots of fun, practical experiences creating and solving simple addition problems.

We finished our week sharing an Act of Worship with our Year 6 Learning Partners. Well done to Kate, Kiera, Alex and Thomas for leading so beautifully.

Reception- Christmas

What an exciting end to our very first term at Pope Paul!

On Tuesday, we enjoyed watching the pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, with our Learning Partners and the rest of the school. Thank you to all of the parents who accompanied us.

On Wednesday, we had our Christmas dinner with our friends and teachers. The food was delicious!

This was followed by the school’s annual ‘Pope Paul’s Got Talent’.

In assembly this morning, the Liturgy Group and Year 2 told us the story of Christmas. They were then joined by some special visitors; Aanay’s parents and his new baby sister, who reminded us of how special the birth of a baby is.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the term and for your overwhelming generosity.

We hope you all have a peaceful and happy Christmas.

Reception Blog 14.12.18

After the excitement of last week’s Nativity performance, we have tried hard to keep to the usual daily class routines!

In Maths, we have been very busy focussing our learning on the concept of time. The class have had lots of fun trying to complete various challenges against the clock, using both digital and sand timers. Activities included counting how many times the children could race their didi cars up and down the playground in a minute. Seeing how many times they could sing ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’, seeing how high they could build a tower in a minute and counting how many times they could write their name.

The children have engaged in a range of different activities focussing on the Nativity. They wrote their own versions, sequenced the story, role played using props and costumes from last week’s performance, made stables from various materials and even made the road to Bethlehem, complete with a tollgate!
