This week we read The day the Crayons quit by Drew Daywalt and explored the different emotions of each character using freeze frames. We have also made predictions about what some of the Crayons might enjoy if they were to quit and created some colourful crayon art. Next week,  we are going to look at persuasive language and begin writing our own persuasive letters.

In maths we have used different mental strategies for addition and subtraction. Next week we will be exploring fact families and inverse for example:

15 + 15 = 30  and 30 -15 = 15

100 +3 = 103 and 103 – 3 = 100

In science we have investigated the function of our muscles; creating models and labelling the muscles and predicting and identifying which muscles we use when running.

We have begun our Advent preparation by creating Advent angels and promises. Each day through Advent we shall be sharing our promises and reading an Advent prayer together. Look out for your child’s Advent angel on the window in the playground.

Whole School Home Learning Advent 2020 Friday 27^th November 2020 – see the Newsletter for examples.

Advent  is the period leading up to Christmas. It starts on the Sunday nearest to 30 November which this year is Sunday 29^th November and ends on Christmas Eve. The word ‘advent‘ comes from the Latin word ‘adventus’ meaning ‘coming’ which is a translation of the Greek word ‘parousia’. It is a time of waiting and preparation rather than a joyful celebration like Christmas.

Advent reminds us to remember and prepare for the birth of Jesus.

To help us prepare for Christ’s coming during Advent we invite you to take part in a creative home learning opportunity. 

1. Make an Advent wreath 

One of our Advent traditions is to pray around an Advent Wreath.

Create an Advent Wreath or Advent Candles from card and paper and display in your home as an Advent focus. Here are some ideas for making a craft display.

2. Write an Advent prayer to say with your family every day of Advent. Here are some examples to help you.

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the universe.

You sent your Son to be the Light of the world and to spread his light of love to all.

As we light the candles of this wreath

May its growing brightness remind us of the approaching nearness of your Son

So that the day of His coming may find us prepared and filled with joy.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Taking part in these activities will help us to prepare and focus for the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

This week has been all about dragons! In English the children have written descriptions of their dragons appearance and described their special powers. They have also been busy in art making a class dragon as well as origami and clay dragon eyes.

In maths the children have been reading scales. Please revise counting in 3 and 5 (timetables) using the free app hit the button over the weekend. During our hockey lessons we have been learning to pass, dribble and tackle – I have been very impressed with the control and skill shown!

Year 3 have been learning about India  for One World Week 2020. We used google maps and atlases to locate India, its surrounding countries, major cities, mountain ranges and major rivers. We’ve learnt to read toe figure grid references and investigated the different ways that the river Ganges is used. Most of the children decided they would like to live in the tropical climate zone of India so that they could see they wonderful wildlife found there. We enjoyed trying onion bhajis and comparing the UK to India.

 

Thank you for your very generous Harvest Festival donations.

 

The children had lots of fun this afternoon creating their own relay races, obstacle course and invasion games – I was very impressed with their teamwork and ball skills.

No home learning has been set but please ensure the children read daily and record this reading in their records.

This week we have practised adding and subtracting 10 from any number.  We have also continued working hard to learn our 3 time tables and our mental fluency.

In English we have been writing expanded noun phrases, ready to use them in our narrative next week.

During PE we have used our throwing, catching an dodging skills to play tag rugby. In Science we have researched interesting facts about sunflowers and used our estimation skills to guess the height and number of seeds on the largest sunflower in our garden.

Spelling – adding ed and ing

Mathletics and Study Ladder activities have been set and all accounts have been checked in class – please let me know on Monday if you have any issues accessing the set activities from home.

Please complete 5 quizzes on read theory – the comprehension adjusts itself automatically according to how the children perform during the quizzes. I am able to check this online too.

Please read with your child and encourage them to log their reading in their record, commenting on what they enjoyed. Please sign and return reading book and records on Thursdays.

It has been a pleasure to welcome your children into Year 3 and to begin their Key Stage 2 journey. We look forward to working with parents/carers to help the children to achieve their full potential in all areas.
