Week 13

In year 5 this week, we have been busily preparing for our Advent service this evening. They have learnt the words to the songs really well and sung beautifully in our rehearsal today.

We really enjoyed our visit from Bishop John Wilson on Wednesday. We welcomed him to our classroom and told him about our science learning. He gave us some grIMG_0421 IMG_0423 IMG_0424eat advice on how to prepare for the birth of Jesus- I hope Year 5 can follow the Bishop’s guidance.

In maths, we continued to work on our mental multiplication and division with a focus on regrouping.

In English, we have begun looking at instructions. We have identified their features and considered their target audiences.

In our Religious learning, we have drawn together everything we have learnt about prayer and the different forms of it we know. We have evaluated and compared them and also written our personal feelings about them. It has been really interesting to hear these responses.

I look forward to seeing you at the service this evening.

Week 12

In maths this week, we have been building on our factor and multiple knowledge to mentally multiply and divide. We have used a range of strategies to do this, such as regrouping, doubling, halving and using known facts.  The children were surprised to see how easily and efficiently they could calculate using large numbers and decimals. Well done Year 5!

In science, we investigated friction. Year 5 put their shoes to the test to find out which ones had greater friction and thought about why. To measure, we learnt how to use a Newton meter.

IMG_0479 IMG_0385 IMG_0384 IMG_0383 IMG_0382

Year 5 really are a talented bunch, and on Thursday we had the chance to watch them in their music concert. It was clear how hard they practise at home. I was proud of how well they performed and the confidence they showed.

IMG_0442 IMG_0438 IMG_0437 IMG_0435 IMG_0433 IMG_0428 IMG_0426 IMG_0425 IMG_0424 IMG_0423 IMG_0420 IMG_0419 IMG_0418

This week, it was national tree week. We celebrated this by weaving using natural materials from the trees in our school environment. Before heading out to gather our resources we discussed how weaving was the method the Saxons would have used to create their clothes. Once we collected what we needed, we headed back inside to weave so that our fingers were not too numb to work!

In assembly this morning, Year 5 placed their Advent Angels alongside the rest of the school in the hall. They have thought about how they will be more helpful and supportive of others during this time. Many have said they will be helping out at home- I’m sure you will look forward to this, parents!

I have been told many of you plan to hang your decorations this weekend. I hope you have a wonderful time doing this and of course enjoy attending the Christmas Fayre.

Have a great weekend.

Home Learning

In order to be fully prepared for the advent service, home learning this week is to learn the words to our songs. I have sent a copy home with each child.

I have also asked the children to complete a piece of science home learning. This is due on Tuesday 12th December. I would like the children to choose a key scientist in the area of forces and create a poster/report/fact file on them. The scientists and a link to some information can be found below.

Key Scientists

Sir Isaac Newton (1642 – 1727) – Formulated the laws of motion – http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/newton_isaac.shtml

Christopher Cockerell (1910- 1999) – Inventor of the hovercraft – http://www.design-technology.info/inventors/page11.htm

Archimedes (c.287 – c.212 BC) – Greek inventor – http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/archimedes.shtml

Week 11

This week in science, we have been learning about taking repeated measurements to improve reliability. We created autogyros with different blade surface areas, and timed how long they took to fall. In this lesson, we required our maths skills to calculate the surface areas and find the averages of our results.

IMG_0452 IMG_0453 IMG_0454 IMG_0455 IMG_0456

We have now concluded our Traction Man recounts and I have been impressed by the standard of writing. The children really engaged with the text and wrote in role brilliantly. I could see they considered their word choices, took inspiration from the story and used parentheses with increasing confidence.

On Thursday, we teamed up with year 6 to practise our athletic skills.

Week 10

All different. All Equal

This week in Year 5, we have taken part in anti bullying week. On Monday, we began by celebrating our differences. The children created mini books that their classmates filled with positive messages. Watching the children read these was a real joy and I wish I could have captured all of their facial expressions on camera. They were truly filled with happiness and felt incredibly valued. Not only did they enjoy the aspect of receiving the compliments, they discussed how much they enjoyed building each other up being the reason someone smiles.

IMG_0421 IMG_0422 IMG_0423 IMG_0424 IMG_0425 IMG_0426 IMG_0427 IMG_0428 IMG_0429 IMG_0431 IMG_0432 IMG_0433 IMG_0434 IMG_0435 IMG_0436

On Tuesday, we took part in a class discussion about the times when people aren’t kind and at what point it becomes bullying. We explored ways of dealing with it and how we can support each other.

On Wednesday, they children used their knowledge of the Lectio Divina to listen to, mediate, pray and reflect on a piece of Scripture about not judging others. They considered how they would apply it to their everyday life to support the anti bullying message.

On Thursday, we turned our attention to cyber bullying. We looked at the impact of it and created posters that showed how we can help ourselves or others who are experiencing it.

Overall, the children showed great maturity and sensitivity to the issues we discussed.

Traction Man is Here!

Alongside the rest of the school, we have been looking at the book ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey. We have focussed on retelling the story through drama and story maps. We also empathised with our main character by holding a press conference for this fearless hero!

There has been a little confusion about what maths work to cover! Last time, I referenced incorrect page numbers. Some children completed the task based on the page, and others based on the title. I will list below the titles and pages that need to be covered. Children can complete the activities they did not do last week.

Book 5-

‘Multiples’ pg 18.

‘Factors and Primes’ pg 19 and 20

‘Multiplying by 10, 100  and 1000’ pg 21 and 22.

Week 9

Year 5 have been getting green fingered this week by planting our bulbs in the class garden. I look forward to seeing the results in the spring.

IMG_0375 IMG_0384

As it is the month of Holy Souls, we have also been remembering those who have passed away. Many children have made bookmarks, or written the names of loved ones on our prayer list.

In R.E we have been learning about a prayer form called Lectio Divinia. The children have been able to see how this is a deeper form of prayer and have discussed the parts.

In computing, we have continued to build our knowledge of algorithms. We have been programming sprites to draw shapes, ensuring we are using the most efficient method to do so.

IMG_0388 IMG_0386 IMG_0387

This week, we have completed our free verse poems about a classroom after school. The children used some beautiful imagery to describe the scene:

‘And the pencils

Like logs

Lay on a blue carpet sea’- Sara

‘On a creamy coloured walls

Hung posters

Overcrowded with work’- Marco

‘Chapter books show off their pages’- Sophia  D

Week 8

Welcome back. I hope that you enjoyed your time as a family over the break. It has been fantastic to hear about all the exciting things the children got up to.

This week in literacy, we began a poetry unit about a city at night. We have been looking at powerful vocabulary and in particular adjectives, verbs and use of personification, simile and metaphor. The children really enjoyed taking part in some readers’ theatre and performed stanzas of ‘Last Night, I saw the city breathing’ by Andrew Fusek Peters.

IMG_0331 IMG_0333 IMG_0334 IMG_0335 IMG_0336 IMG_0337 IMG_0338In numeracy, we began looking at common multiples. We have connected it to other areas of maths and represented them in a range of ways.

IMG_0362 IMG_0344 IMG_0345 IMG_0342

Our computing learning on programming had us thinking about processes this week. We used flow charts to create algorithms for automated control systems. We were also able to create charts for everyday activities, such as making a cup of tea. We discovered they could range from very simple, to more complex.

IMG_0371

In science, we turned our attention to forces. We went outside to see if we could demonstrate some forces.

IMG_0369 IMG_0366 IMG_0363

In our topic learning, we found out about Anglo Saxon village life. We then used this information to create a map of a Saxon village by using natural items found in our playground. See if your child can explain the key features to you.

IMG_0329 IMG_0328 IMG_0327 IMG_0324 IMG_0325 IMG_0326 IMG_0323 IMG_0322 IMG_0321 IMG_0317 IMG_0318 IMG_0320 IMG_0315

In R.E, we have been learning about Judaism. In particular, we have discovered more about Bar and Bat Mitzva. We compared this Jewish rite of passage with the sacrament of confirmation that we studied last half term.

Overall, this first week back has flown by. Not only did we take on a range of learning, but over half of the class represented the school by singing at the Royal Albert Hall. While they were signing their hearts out, the rest of us went to OLSV for All Saints’ Feat Day mass. I’m not sure how we managed to fit it all in a week! The children have been bubbling with excitement today about their weekend firework plans. As a more creative home learning, I have given the children the option of creating a firework poem. It would be great to see them using the poetic features we have discussed this week to describe this wonderfully sensory event.

Family home learning!

Today we dug over our Year 5 garden in preparation for planting on Monday. Many of the children have told me that they have keen gardeners at home and they would like to design it with you. We have some spring bulbs and need a plan for where we should plant them. See the link below to view the selection we have. I look forward to seeing the designs. The theme of the garden is ‘Resurrection’ as they should flower in time for Easter.

One World Week

G’day!

Year 5 had a bonza week exploring all things Australian. We started the week with our very own bush tucker trial, where vegemite was on the menu. Take a look at Year 5’s faces and see if you can guess how they felt about the popular Aussie spread! We then followed that with a children’s party favourite, Fairybread.

In Geography, we used atlases to locate the country and discover its states. We also looked at the official and Aboriginal flags, finding what they are made up of and the meanings behind them. In history, we made connections between Britain’s and Australia’s past by looking at primary resources of transportation. The children were amazed to find out how young some of the convicts were.

In art, we took inspiration from the Aborigines and made paintings of bush wildlife using a dotted technique.

Year 5 loved making lamingtons, a cake coated in chocolate and coconut. They proved a far greater hit than the vegemite!

We also learnt about Australian music. We discovered the meaning of Waltzing Matilda, a well-known bush ballad. With a clear understanding of the lyrics, Year 5 sang beautifully and with amazing enthusiasm.

I have been really impressed with the children’s home learning this week. The posters, models and power points showed the children’s enthusiasm for learning. Well done children!

One World Week has been a fantastic end to our half term. It has been wonderful teaching the children again and it was lovely to see so many of you at our celebration morning. I wish you all a wonderful half term break.

Week 6

This week, we have been writing biographies in English about author Anthony Horowitz. We have researched his life and found out what inspired him to write. Many of the children have taken books from our ‘Featured Author’ area to read his work.

In maths, we have been learning about negative numbers and using our knowledge to reason and problem solve.

In geography, Year 5 improved their map reading skills by identifying symbols and finding out what they mean. They focused on their local area to see what they could find.

IMG_0190 IMG_0191 IMG_0192 IMG_0193 IMG_0194 IMG_0195 IMG_0196 IMG_0197 IMG_0198 IMG_0199 IMG_0200 IMG_0201 IMG_0202 IMG_0205

In science, we learnt about night and day. We saw how we can tell the time by using shadows and how the sun’s position changes in our sky. The children then wrote explanations of why this happens.

IMG_0210 IMG_0209 IMG_0208 IMG_0207 IMG_0206 IMG_0211 IMG_0212 IMG_0213 IMG_0214 IMG_0215 IMG_0216 IMG_0217 IMG_0218 IMG_0219 IMG_0220

Next week, you have the opportunity to join us in our classroom twice! Our class mass is on Wednesday and the children will be bringing home invitations for you today. On Friday, we have our Harvest Festival Assembly, followed by a celebration morning. We will be sharing all of the exciting things we have learnt about Australia.

Week 5

What a busy week! On Tuesday, Year 5 had a fantastic time at the Science Museum. The children enjoyed looking at the space gallery and loved the 3D IMAX experience. It allowed us to explore space and imagine life on the International Space Station. Back at school, we reflected on how beautiful our planet is and the amazing images we had seen. A real highlight of the trip was the Apollo 11 simulator. We bumped and jolted along and felt like we were on the moon! There were so many smiles throughout the day that it made the coach journey worth it!
