Science Week

This week, we celebrated British Science Week by exploring the theme ‘Change and Adapt’.

On Tuesday, we had an engaging session with Mr. Adu, a Science teacher from Nicholas Breakspear School. The children designed mazes and used magnets to skillfully guide ball bearings through them, learning about forces and magnetism in a fun and interactive way.

On Thursday we took part in a biscuit investigation like the other classes in the school. In Year 6, our focus was on how the sugar content of a biscuit affects the time it takes to break. There were some surprising results with a particularly strong Rich Tea that lasted over 49 minutes!

Year 6 also included some oracy skills in their science this week. When presented with the scenario ‘What if we woke up and there was no more electricity?’, the children thought carefully and had fantastic ideas. They used language to build, challenge, probe and clarify each other’s ideas.

We have also been busy with some assessments this week which we will continue on Monday and Tuesday.  The children have received their test results so far and have demonstrated great maturity in handling them. Their positive attitude, resilience, and willingness to learn from the experience have been truly commendable. It’s wonderful to see them embracing both their achievements and areas for growth with such a responsible mindset!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Another busy week has flown by in Year 6. On Tuesday we celebrated Mardi Gras with colourful clothes, made and tossed our own pancakes, took part in pancake obstacle races and performed the whole school mardi gras dance. The children looked fabulous!  Well done goes to our sports captains, Sienna, Charlie, Loui, Andreas and Emily for setting up the obstacle races for all classes to take part in and explaining to each class what they had to do.  To top off the day the whole school came together to perform their Mardi Gras dance.  Every lunchtime last week and during Monday and Tuesday’s lunchtime this week our sports captains have been encouraging the children to come into the main hall to practise the dance.  A special thank you goes to Emily and Sienna who led the whole school in dance out into the key stage two playground to perform!

Following on from our day of fun, KS2 then approached Ash Wednesday with great reverence as they took part in mass with the rest of KS2. Their attendance at church and their wonderful singing really enhanced the liturgy.  Thank you to Isabelle and Rian who read and to Nathan and Raylan who were altar servers.

On Thursday, it was back to dressing up, this time for World Book Day! We had a real range of characters! As part of our celebrations, Year 6 visited their Reception buddies to share a story.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

This week we have been exploring Community and Participation which is part of our Catholic Social Teaching principle in our RE lessons.   The children have been discussing ways to use their talents to contribute to their community.

As Pope Francis said:

“Dear young people, please, don’t be observers of life, but get involved.

Jesus did not remain an observer, but he immersed himself. Don’t be observers, but immerse yourself in the reality of life, as Jesus did.”

Watch this space to find out what we as a class have decided to do to contribute to our community!

On Tuesday when the weather was drier and sunnier, the Liturgy Leaders organised a special liturgical Palm Burning Service with the children in Key Stage 2 to burn last year’s Palm Sunday leaves to create ashes for next week’s Ash Wednesday Mass. Watching this old tradition reminded us all of the journey towards Lent. A special thank you goes to our Liturgy Leaders: Michael, Sophie, Chloe, Mya and Tiya who led this service with such confidence and reverence.

In Maths this week we have been finishing off our work in Algebra by focusing on formulae, forming equations and solving two-step equations. We have also being working on our pace in answering mental maths questions.

Our English lessons have been dedicated to completing and editing our reports on Spiderwick. They are looking really impressive.

In PE, Year 6 completed a gym and dance display for their reception partners. It was really well executed and the younger children were very excited to watch.

Have a lovely weekend.

During this week – Other Faith Week- the children have been learning about the religion of Islam. Respect for traditions and beliefs of other faiths is vital in our multicultural community. The children learnt about the Muslim Holy Book, the Qur’an and the Five Pillars.  On Wednesday they went to London Central Mosque. The workshop leader expressed how he was very impressed by the children’s knowledge and fabulous behaviour.  Well done Year 6!

This week the class were also took part in a dodge ball workshop.  I have never seen so much energy in one room…they were fully engaged and clearly had lots of fun!

In RE we have also spent time this week looking at the seven sacraments which are an outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual grace given by Christ.

Wishing you and your families a lovely half term.

I have uploaded some resources for your children to work on over the half term for Maths and Reading into the revision activities folder labelled 2025.  Do encourage your child to have a go at these activities over the holidays.

Friday 7th February, 2025

This week was another busy week.

On Thursday Beth Cullen our Education NHS Wellbeing practitioner delivered  an assembly to all KS2 classes and  I was really impressed with how calmly Year 6 engaged with the relaxation script and how involved they all were in the workshop we had back in class.

We have continued with our work in Design and Technology in creating our mobile phone covers.  The children have been hard at work threading their needles and using their knowledge of various stitching to ensure that their cover fits their design.

In Maths we have completed our work on Ratio and next week will be embracing algebra!  The children have also worked hard on their daily arithmetic skills.  There is a competition today organised by TTRs and I would like to encourage the children to participate in this.

In English, Year 6 have begun writing their own field guide entries for beasts they have created. They will complete these next week.

Have a wonderful weekend

Friday 31st January

This week the children started to work on their design for a mobile phone cover so the children were busy cutting, sewing and designing their creations.  We have been delighted by their sewing techniques and their enthusiasm in wanting to practise their sewing each morning during their early morning start.

In Maths the children have been working hard on developing their understanding of the topic Ratio and the language associated with that. We have also continued with our work on long multiplication and long division.

In English, we have looked at the subjunctive form, writing newspaper reports imagining that a sea serpent was found in The Thames.

In Science, we have explored incomplete and complete circuits and variations within them.

In our PE learning, we have begun designing our gymnastics show which we will perform to our Reception partners at the end of the half term

Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend.

Friday 24th January, 2025

Another week and what a busy week it has been!

In Maths we have finished our work on fractions, moving onto long multiplication and long division.

In English we have practised varying our sentence structure by starting with subordinate clauses.

In RE we are covering our new focus on Sacramental People.  Also this week, the Jubilee Year of Hope has been launched! Pope Francis has declared that the year 2025 will be a Holy Year of Jubilee for the Catholic Church – an event that takes place once every 25 years. The Year of Hope is a time to rekindle faith, share hope, and pray.

It was the girls chance to shine this week in sport – we had a Netball tournament on Thursday morning and unfortunately, due to the rain, the girl’s football match did not take place in the afternoon. The children played  well and with such friendly, generous and consideration towards their teammates.

We managed to get our for walk with Reception on Wednesday this week. Although it was muddy, the children had a great time. Year 6 brought great energy and were retelling the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt as we walked along. We were impressed with how much of it they remembered!

Have a wonderful weekend,
