The children in Year 4 this week, spent some time researching in preparation for their third extended writing piece, a non-chronological report. In Maths, they focused on counting in multiples before moving on to scaling and correspondence problems. In Science, the class carried out practical investigations regarding sound, linking it with vibration whilst in RE the children explained the meaning of the ‘O’ Antiphon prayers. We also walked down to the church to rehearse for the KS2 Advent Service. They attended karate on Monday and started their prototypes in D&T, creating their first two mechanisms.

Thank you for those of you who sent in thin cardboard pieces like empty cereal boxes or packaging materials.We would still be grateful to receive more, so keep sending them in if you can. Thank you for your support with this.

This week, the children in Year 4 first planned, then wrote their big Roman themed narrative across 7 paragraphs using writing tools such as similes, metaphors, expanded noun phrases and subordinating conjunctions.

In Maths, the children applied their understanding of column addition with regrouping when playing a competitive game using playing cards.

In Science, they looked at a problem solving enquiry using their understanding of distance and volume to plan fire alarms across the school whilst in RE, they looked at Matthew’s Gospel and the Jesse Tree to explain the significance of Jesus’ genealogy.

On Wednesday, they created their final art piece of their unit of pattern making, using all skills taught this term.

On Thursday, the class also performed in their first Assembly on Remembrance. Well done for the lovely reading and singing.

Friday completed the week with a 2 minutes silence at 11 o’clock followed by a procession across the school to celebrate Remembrance Day.

It has been another busy week in Year 4. On Monday, the children carried on learning new stances and kicks in Karate, whilst also launching One World Week, where our focus country was the Philippines. The children looked at atlases, satellite images, globes and maps to locate the island country before learning about its major cities, languages, its population and religion.

On Tuesday, we answered our key question, ‘Why do people go to pilgrimage to the Philippines’? We watched video clips about a beautiful church near Manila, The National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help also known as the Baclaran Church. We researched the special icon of Mary with baby Jesus on her arm that is displayed in the temple and listened to devotees explaining its healing powers. We have later written our own prayers to the Divine Mother.

On Wednesday, we baked Philippine butter biscuits in the morning whilst also looking at local, handcrafted Filipino household objects, ornaments and jewellery, inferring what they tell us about the people and culture of the Philippines.  The children later tried their hands in paper weaving, recreating the national flag.

On Thursday, we went to our first class trip to the Epping Forest District Museum, where we participated in a Roman workshop, using artefacts found in a Roman villa and bathhouse in nearby Abridge. We acted as slaves to ‘Lady Julia’ preparing for a grand party, identifying Roman objects used in everyday life at around 80AD. The children dressed up and offered their objects to her explaining their use and relevance. We also toured the galleries of the museum, tracing Roman coins, playing Roman board games made out of sheep knuckles, digging for treasures on a tiny excavation site and moulding clay to create our own tiles.

Thank you for those of you who came to see me this week; it has been great to celebrate your children’s achievements. I hope you enjoyed visiting our classroom, as well.

This week, in Year 4, the children consolidated their rounding skills before moving on to mental addition strategies. In English, the children heard their second Roman myth and using that as an inspiration, wrote short poems using noun phrases and similes to describe characters, whilst also learning about metaphors. In Science, the class looked at food chains, whilst in RE they gathered and explained all their beliefs drawn from the Genesis Creation story. The children also rehearsed their Class Mass following the theme of ‘Love one another’.

In Art, the class made tessellating stencils to create a colourful display, whilst in Computing they looked at ‘time lapse’ and edited short video clips they recorded on iPads.

Our Class Mass is on Thursday, 13th October and you are all welcome to celebrate it with us in our classroom.

Year 4 had yet another busy week. In Maths, the children finished their first unit of place value and moved on to number magnitude as a preparation towards rounding whole numbers. They used strips of blank paper to identify crucial benchmark numbers, before placing mystery numbers on their number lines, thinking about the relative size of numbers in context.

In English, the class completed their first extended writing when composing effective poems describing a mythical creature. Very well done, the poems read beautifully! In Art, we looked at rulemaking and using colourful lines to create pattern. In Computing, the children explained the difference between data and information, whilst in RE, they wrote paragraphs reflecting on God as a creator, with reference to the Book of Genesis from the Old Testament. In PE, we practiced dodging and passing to build towards invasion games.

We also practiced our multiplication tables daily, in a competitive setting and most of the children could recall some of the key facts in our current 10 sec/question time. Good job!
