Week 20 Blog

For ‘other faith week’ Year 1, visited St Giles church in South Mymms. We were greeted by the churchwarden, William Marsterson who shared his knowledge about the history of the church. The children displayed reverence throughout the talk and asked some interesting question. After, they enjoyed exploring the church observing all its architectural features and monuments. They were able to discuss similarities and differences between St Giles church and Our Lady and St Vincent church. A huge thank you to our parent helpers for accompanying us on the day!

Safer Internet Day!

Today the children enjoyed learning all about how to stay safe when using the internet. They looked at an informative powerpoint with the character, Smartie the penguin and then wrote about how to keep safe in a speech bubble. Lastly, they thought about how they could stay positive when using the internet, using kind words and sending kind messages to their friends.

Week 19 Blog

This week the children have been learning about the story, The last noo-noo by Jill Murphy. They identified the events in the story and enjoyed interviewing characters from the book. In maths, they engaged with understanding the concept of  tens and ones, using dienes and speaking frames. In science, they created a human pictogram to see what is the most popular hair colour in the class. Then, they completed a whole class, eye pictogram.  On Friday, we had a special Candlemas assembly. Well done to the children that took part in this beautiful assembly and were awarded certificates.

Week 18 Blog

This week the children have been learning about the story of Passover. They were really motivated by the story and showed great understanding in knowing the characters, settings and events. In RE, they ordered the ten picture story parts and matched the words to the picture cards independently. On Friday, they took part in their very first Year 1 assembly about the story of Passover and did an amazing job in learning all their speaking and acting parts. Well done children! Thank you parents for your support.

Week 17 Blog

This week the children listened to the Passover story with awe and amazement. They were truly captivated by the events and were able to show their understanding through drawing story maps. In Maths, they engaged in problem solving, finding the missing part number to  total the whole number. They worked in pairs and took turns to hide the objects.

Week 16 Blog

A warm welcome back to the start of the new year! This week the children have been learning about 2d and 3d shapes. Working in groups they completed a tricky shape puzzle work. In English they have been securing their understanding of how to form a sentence. They worked in pairs to match two sentences together with the conjunction ‘and’. Lastly, a 50 House points star was awarded to one lucky boy who could think of a word that contained the ‘aigh’ sound – straight.

Week 14

It has been a very busy Christmas week starting with an unexpected snow day! On Tuesday the children had the opportunity to explore the snow and find out about why we put salt on the roads and pavements. On Wednesday they took part in the KS1 nativity play. They all sang beautifully – Well done to all the children in Year 1 and Year 2! A big thank you to Miss Davey for organising the show. On Thursday they had their Christmas lunch and this was followed by the annual, ‘Pope Paul’s got talent’ show. Well done to Oliver in Year 1 for his wonderful singing and sharing first prize with Sophie in Year 5.

Week 13 Blog

This week the children have been busy with rehearsals for the KS1 Christmas play – Children of the World. Thank you for your support at home in helping them to learn the words to the songs. We all look forward to seeing you next week!  In literacy the children have been learning about poems and enjoyed reciting them in class. When the Bishop visited Year 1, he read out a poem about worms much to the children’s delight!

Week 12 Blog

This week the children visited Dame Alice Owen’s woodland area to take part in activities for  National Tree Week. They were truly mesmerized by the awe and beauty of the wood. They observed the trees and listened to the sounds of the birds and leaves crunching under their feet. They explored 2d shapes in the outdoor learning environment by findings sticks and twigs to make the various shapes.
