Year 5 – 09/05/25

To celebrate VE Day yesterday, Year 5 stepped back in time to 1945. We began by creating colourful bunting, just like the decorations used at street parties of the time. Using real historical sources, we then explored how people felt on VE Day—recognising both the joy and the challenges—and wrote letters imagining we were there ourselves. In the afternoon, we learnt to sing The Lambeth Walk in a cockney accent before finishing the day dancing the steps to this iconic wartime song. On Wednesday, we welcomed Nick Alexander from the Potters Bar Historical Society, who spoke to us about growing up in Potters Bar during World War II. He shared fascinating first-hand memories of living with rations, experiencing air raids, and how the local area was affected during the war.

Also this week:

  • Maths – We began our new unit on area and perimeter, focusing on efficient methods to calculate the perimeter of a rectangle.

  • English – We learnt how to add parenthesis to our writing—extra information inserted into a sentence using brackets, commas or dashes.

  • RE – We developed our oracy skills by discussing the statement: “We no longer need the Holy Spirit because Jesus’ mission to his apostles has since been accomplished.”

This afternoon, we crowned Mary with flowers in our May Procession—a reflective and peaceful way to end the week.
