Year 1 Week Beginning 4.11.24

It was wonderful to welcome the children back on Tuesday and to hear their wonderful stories from over the half term break!

The class have come back with a great attitude towards their learning and have demonstrated a readiness to embark on their new KS1 curriculum. This week, Year 1 had lessons in: Phonics, English, Maths, RE, PSHE, Science, Art, Music, History, Computing, Handwriting and PE! They also participated in their daily collective worship, as usual!

In English, the class have been focussing on the story Stanley’s Stick by John Hegley. Here, they have been writing about the thoughts and feelings of the main character in the book and have been writing their own responses to events in the story.

In Maths, Year 1 have begun learning about part, part, whole in number and have used part-whole models practically to help them write simple mathematical number sentences, using maths symbols.

In Art, the children explored spirals on a large scale and had lots of fun creating them by keeping their pastel still and moving the paper only!

In RE, the children learnt about the next Catholic Social Teaching  aspect- Options for the Poor. They thought about the real messages of Advent and Christmas and how they can help families that are less fortunate than their own, during this special time. The class then recorded a video message in groups for the rest of the school, explaining that Advent is a time of giving and what the children and families of Pope Paul School could do to help those less fortunate.

As of next week, Year 1 will be having an additional PE lesson on a Monday and so they will need to wear their PE Kits to school on both a Monday and Friday from now on, thank you.

Next week, the children will come home with a login for Spelling Shed. This will be stuck into your child’s reading book on their reading day. Online spelling home learning will be set from next Friday. More information on next weeks blog!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Ms Pemberton and the Year 1 team
