Year 1 Blog Week 12

Walking in a winter wonderland

It was a beautiful winter morning on Wednesday and Year 1 wrapped up warm for their walk in the woods as part of National Tree Week. The children had great fun exploring the woods in Dame Alice Owen’s school. They enjoyed looking for twigs to create twig towers and twig trees. The children were also busy recognising all the signs of winter.

Inspired by our walk in the woods the children painted some winter scenes. We recognised that one of the signs of winter is that some trees lose all of their leaves. The children created some brilliant tree silhouettes.

In Maths this week we have been measuring lengths using non-standard units of measure. The children completed an outdoor Maths trail. They measured twigs and leaves and the distance between trees using different parts of their body. What part of your body would you use to measure the length of a twig?

It’s good to get out in the fresh air. Children look like they had fun. Maybe a trip to the RAF Museum in South Mimms could be a good idea.
