Year 6 – 14/12/18

We continued on our journey of Advent this week with acts of worship based on this Sunday’ Gospel reading. Thank you to those children who led us in more beautiful reflection. On Tuesday night, the class participated in the KS2 Advent Service at the church and displayed their talents of singing, dancing, acting and reading with reverence and maturity. Well done for being such fantastic ambassadors for our school.

On Wednesday and Thursday,  Year 5 and 6 were treated to music concerts showcasing the talents of the classes’ guitar, vocal, piano and string students. Well done to all the performers: you certainly lived out the school’s mission value of using your talents, and the festive numbers definitely got us all into the Christmas spirit!

Today, we were visited by Vincent from the Oscar Romero Society. He was very impressed with the children’s knowledge of St Romero and the children were interested to learn more about Romero crosses and about his work with St Paul. They also enjoyed trying on the stoles and skull caps!

We have entered into Advent thinking deeply about what it is we are preparing for and how we can better ourselves for the Lord’s coming. A couple of weeks ago, the children worked in groups to prepare Acts of Worship to align with the Advent Gospel readings, and this week we had our first two groups leading us in prayer. Well done for allowing us to reflect on how we can prepare ourselves for Christmas.

On Tuesday, the children practised their recent learning on addition and subtraction of fractions by playing a competitive card game.

The Healthy Living Team are still leading their fruit competition and this week it was Year 3’s turn to fill the hamper. Well done to the team for your efforts in promoting this.

Well done for your efforts in rehearsing for the Advent service so far. Please continue to practise your lines and the songs (see last week’s blog post) to make Tuesday night a special and memorable occasion.

Parts for Advent Service 2018:

Francesco Come Lord Jesus come

And let your light shine through us

So that through our actions we may be salt for the earth, a light in peoples sight

And that we might reach out to you in one another especially those in need.

Will This evening, as we light the candles on our Advent wreath, we will remember that Jesus comes to spread the light of love and peace to the four corners of the world.

North, South, East and West, we all prepare to celebrate the coming of Christ amongst us. Our reflection helps us to prepare to welcome Jesus into our hearts by showing how parts of our world prepare in different ways.

Alex One family, one community, one world, we wait in joyful hope and expectation for dreams to come true. Dreams of peace on earth for peoples of all nations.
Oliver and ______ Two children come forward one to light the candle and one holding the flag. Child lights the candle and the flag is placed by the altar.

Claudia and Deya Two children then come forward. One is dressed as a young Jewish lady (Mary) the other a boy.
Toju Our final reflection this evening takes us back to where the story  began. A story of hope, peace, joy and love for all. The coming of Emmanuel,  God’s son, born in a stable.

Let us listen again as if for the first time, the story of the birth of Jesus.

Alessandro For God so loved the world that he gave his only –begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not die but have eternal life. For God sent the Son in to the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” John 3: 16 -17
Eden Mime – Angel Gabriel
Claudia Mime – Mary
Annabel Two thousand years ago a young Jewish girl living in Nazareth, Israel was chosen to be the mother of God’s only son Jesus.

God sent his messenger, the angel Gabriel, to a town called Nazareth, where Mary lived. Mary was going to be married to Joseph. “Rejoice, Mary,” the angel said. “God has especially chosen you.”

Ailbhe Mary did not understand what the angel could mean and she was frightened.

The angel said, “Mary, do not be afraid. You are going to have a baby boy. You must call him Jesus. He will be great. He will be called the son of the Most High.”

Pause for singing

Mary replied, “I am ready to do what God wants me to do.”

Marco Mary was filled with joy and happiness. She went to visit her cousin Elizabeth to tell her the news. Mary responded to God’s call and prayed a special song of praise and thanks to God. We call this The Magnificat.
Sara, Maria, Sofia,

Ciara A, Andria, Naomi

Sean Mary and Joseph then journeyed on to Bethlehem – a journey of suffering, pain and hostility – until they were able to bring the Son of God into our human world.

A baby, lying in a crib, who would grow up to be our Saviour, who would die and rise again so that we can have Eternal Life.

Jude God sent Jesus to us at Christmas to show us how much he loves us. God’s gift to us, the greatest gift of love.

Let us pray in silence for a time and focus on the crib, thinking about the gifts we can bring to our world, gifts that Jesus wants us to give to the world.

Thomas We bring the gift of hope –

Today, millions of refugees are fleeing war, natural disaster, poverty or persecution in search for a better life.

We are called to stand alongside our sisters and brothers in solidarity, sharing our hope for a world transformed.

Year 6 – 23/11/18

There has been a lot going on in Year 6 over the past couple of weeks! Last week was Parliament Week as well as Anti-Bullying Week. To celebrate Parliament Week, we welcomed to our classroom local Councillor Peter Knell and his wife June, who are former mayor and mayoress of Hertsmere. We also learnt about the Suffragette Movement and recognised that it is 100 years since women first had the right to vote. Another aspect of Parliament Week was learning about the similarities and differences between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and the children even got to dress up as clerks, speakers and MPs!

For Anti-Bullying Week the class participated in a workshop which explored emotions and how we might act in different scenarios. The children also made anti-bullying posters with their Reading Partners.

The Healthy Living Group introduced a competition to the school last week whereby each class has to bring in the widest selection of fruit. There was a fantastic team effort from Y6 and together we collected 21 different fruits; we then enjoyed these as a healthy snack on Friday afternoon.

6 children represented the school by participating in cross country at Queenswood School and did brilliantly – well done!

This week, the House Captains went to the graves of three local men who fought for our country during World War One. They laid cards made by the rest of the school, thanking them for what they did, then they went up to the war memorial next to Oakmere Park and found where the three men’s names were engraved. Thank you to Mrs Lines for organising this and taking them out.

In Science this week, we learnt about the circulatory system and acted out the journey of a red blood cell as it delivers oxygen to the body.

Year 6 – 09/11/18

First week back and Y6 were straight back into it with their class mass. Despite having so little time to prepare, you did yourselves proud: well done to the readers for spreading the message of remembrance so clearly and compassionately; well done to the musicians for adding so much colour to our liturgy; well done to the servers for carrying out your role so diligently; well done to each and every one of you for your reverent and spirited participation. It made an excellent start to the new half term.

We have also jumped straight into our new English unit, which is a whole-school focus on the text Weslandia. Yesterday, we hot-seated some of the characters from the book in preparation for next week’s task of writing a journalistic report on the event.

The children also have 2 envelopes – one containing this week’s words and one empty one. Once they feel they are secure with a word from Envelope 1 (short-term memory), they put it into Envelope 2 (long-term memory). I could test them on their long-term memory words at any time, and they will be revisiting them in class. If they misspell a word that they’ve put into Envelope 2, it goes back into Envelope 1.

REMINDER – if you have any rucksacks at home that you no longer use, we would be grateful if you could put it in the washing machine and bring it into school on Monday for the Caritas collection.

Also, we have run out of tissues in the classroom. As we approach cold season, it would be very much appreciated if each child could bring in a box. Thank you to those who sent in tissues last half term; having them in the classroom is less disruptive than children having to ask to leave the classroom to get a tissue from the toilets.

Have a very enjoyable weekend.

Year 6 – One World Week 2018

Our final week of the half term has been full of creative learning. For One World Week, Year 6 has been studying Poland. We kicked off the week by looking at the physical and human characteristics of the country, and since then have cooked Placki ziemniaczane (Polish potato pancakes), danced the Krakowiak, performed Holocaust poetry, written our own Holocaust poems, created Wycinanki (Polish paper cutting folk art) and studied a piece of music by Polish composer Chopin. They have produced beautiful learning which they are extremely proud of. We were also very lucky because Sara brought in some beautiful traditional Polish clothes and told us about the designs and when she wears them. Thank you Sara!IMG_0125

Year 6 – 19/10/18

Wow, what a week it’s been! Today has been unforgettable. From a special assembly in the morning and creating Pope Paul VI peace art, to making Vatican flags and culminating in the grand finale of the release of 12 white doves, our memories of celebrating when Pope Paul became St Paul will stay with us forever.

Also this week, we welcomed Mrs Dain, a resident of Potters Bar who lived during WW2. She consolidated our learning of the reasons for the outbreak of the war, and shared stories of her experience. It was captivating to hear her speaking with so much passion and vigour. In science, the children carried out investigations they had planned the previous week looking into what affects brightness in an electrical circuit.

One World Week Home Learning – due Tuesday 23rd October 2018

Next week is One World Week and, in Year 6, we are going to be studying Poland. We will be doing lots of fun and interesting activities, including creating folk art, cooking Polish food and learning about Poland’s situation in WWII.

For home learning this weekend, you are asked to do a research project on a famous person. Two of the most famous Polish people in history are Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer, and Marie Curie, the scientist. Choose one of these people, research their life, then decide how you are going to present what you’ve found out. Your home learning needs to be hand-written and must answer the following questions:

  • What is this person famous for?
  • How has this person influenced our life today?

I will make a display of your learning, so ensure it is visually appealing as well as informative.

I look forward to seeing what you produce!

Pilgrimage To Rome and St Paul VI Celebration Day

Today the school has been filled with excitement and joy as we celebrated the canonization of Pope Paul VI. We started the day with an assembly where everyone was presented with a St Paul VI prayer card. The children then enjoyed an extra break and Fairtrade treat in the sunshine. Following the theme of peace, the children spent the morning creating flags, designs, sketches and mosaics as well as continuing their research on Pope Paul VI. This afternoon we released doves of peace in the playground as a symbol of our continuing mission, following the charism of Pope Paul, to support peace and justice for all. Our pilgrimage to Rome to share in this very special moment was inspiring and uplifting. We felt privileged to be able to represent our school community in this important event. Father Shaun also attended the Mass in St Peter’s Square and we were all invited by Alex (our Seminarian)to visit the English College for Mass and then refreshments, enjoying the view of Rome from the rooftop terrace! Throughout the weekend we remembered our Pope Paul School Community and prayed for the continuing success of our school. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful group of staff who are happy to make a financial and time commitment in support of our community. Thank you ladies!

Year 6 – 12/10/18

Without doubt, one of my favourite aspects of teaching Year 6 is watching them spend time with their Reception learning partners. The kindness and patience they show towards them is incredibly admirable, and the Reception class are lucky to have such strong role models to help them learn. This afternoon, they helped their partners to draw portraits of our school saint, Pope Paul VI, who is being canonised on Sunday.

This past fortnight, the Year 6s have been really proactive with their new posts of responsibility. The liturgy group have been extremely active in this Month of the Rosary. They have planned and led the last two Monday assemblies, and have led a decade of the Rosary every lunchtime. As it has recently been St Vincent’s and St Francis’ Feast Days, the house captains for the houses have also led assemblies on their respective saints. I have been so impressed with the time and commitment they have put into preparing for these events. The Fairtrade Group went to the church recently to assist in the cake sale, whilst the Eco Club have been busy promoting waste reduction, collecting energy-related data and creating informative posters.
