Year 6 – Tuesday 5th May learning

Good morning, Year 6.

I hope you all enjoyed watching the May Procession yesterday morning. I thought it was a beautiful tribute to Our Lady and I was very moved when seeing all of your faces. If you didn’t catch it, then you can find it here.

I was absolutely delighted yesterday to receive this video of Evie and her mum doin’ the Lambeth Walk!

I also received some fantastic learning from Alex, including yesterday’s science investigation. He’s really thought about the appropriate scientific vocabulary to use – well done Alex.

On yesterday’s blog, I forgot to put up the results of last week’s online learning leaderboards, so here we have them:

Readtheory: 1st Giovanna, 2nd Mikey, 3rd Evie

Prodigy: 1st Alex, 2nd Matthew A, 3rd Jude

Music This week’s listening task has a VE Day theme, as the song that I have chosen is one that has become synonymous with WW2. It is called We’ll Meet Again and was sung by Vera Lynn. Vera Lynn (born 1917) was one of the superstars of entertainment during the War years and became known as ‘The Forces’ Sweetheart’. The song found its fame during the Second World War, as it resonated with soldiers who had to leave their families and fight for Britain.

On Friday at 9pm on BBC One there is going to be a nationwide sing-along led by Dame Vera Lynn herself, so after answering the questions about it, it would be wonderful if you could learn to sing part of it.

May Procession 2020

Today we honour Our Lady with our special May procession.

Bring flowers of the rarest, bring flowers of the fairest

From garden and woodland and hillside and vale;

Our full hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling

The praise of the loveliest flower of the vale.

O Mary, we crown you with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.

Spelling Ask a family member to dictate the following passage to you, writing it into your handwriting book. Remember to think about correct punctuation, as well as spelling.

Last year, climate change activists protested on the streets of London for weeks at a time. Their aim was to influence the government and world leaders into acting in the best interests of the environment, which is facing its greatest challenge ever as sea levels rise and biodiversity suffers. Images were broadcast onto our televisions of protesters being arrested and charged with criminal damage after they had gone to the extreme measures of chaining themselves to factories and spray-painting public buildings. Although many people object to the disruption that the activists caused, others say that their efforts will have long-term benefits for the planet.

History WALT conduct an historical enquiry.

Imagine if this pandemic and consequent lockdown had taken place 50 years ago. Would children be spending their time at home in the same way as you are? Would families be engaging in the same activities together? Now is a fantastic time to speak to older people you know to find out about changes in living memory. Watch this video which will take you through the process of conducting an enquiry to find out ‘How has life changed within living memory?’

Use this sheet to plan your enquiry and to record your findings. Give yourself a couple of days to complete this, so that you allow plenty of time to gather your evidence.

May Procession 2020

May Procession 2020

Due to our school closure we will be unable to have our usual May Procession. However we would like to try and have a remote celebration to honour Mary during this month of May.

Please send a photo or 2 second video clip of your child presenting/holding up a flower/blossom, to your class email address. We will then use the images to make a virtual May Procession. It would be lovely if parents would also like to join us!

The dead line to receive photos/video clips is Friday 1st May at 12noon.

The May Procession will take place on Monday 4th May at 11am.

Access via all the class blogs

Thank you for your continued support.
