Welcome To Year 5

I hope you all had a wonderful summer. Our first few days in Year 5 have flown by and we have already gotten to grips with our new topics. We have begun exploring Scandinavia by using atlases and identifying the location of the countries, their capitals and closest bodies of water.

Year 5 have also begun their learning on space and I was impressed by how many of them could name the planets and tell me their order from the sun. We built on this knowledge by investigating their relative size and distance from each other using fruits. The children made excellent observations about the differences between rocky and gas planets.

For our first English unit this year, we have become poets. Year 5 have been streamlining their use of language by using fewer words and focusing on using more precise vocabulary. They have also communicated this learning by performing some paired poems based on a scene from Planet Earth II.

In R.E, we have been thinking about our school mission prayer and what it means to us. We have investigated where the beliefs have come from by looking at scripture.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing you at ‘Meet the Teacher’ on Monday at 3pm.

In our penultimate week of year 5, we have been busy creating moving toys. Year 5 successfully created linear movement to make their toys bob up and down. As well as creating our toys, we evaluated them and explained why we were also getting some unwanted rotary movement. The children also considered why we were having trouble keeping our follower in line and helped to create solutions to overcome this. The reflections on their toys showed fantastic understanding of cams mechanisms- well done year 5.

On Tuesday, Year 5 collaborated with year 6 to complete a pieced of mosaic style art. The smaller square images fitted together to create a red, white and blue lion that is displayed in the hall. This time with year 6 gave the year 5 children the opportunity to ask questions about next year and find out what their last year at Pope Paul has in store. Thank you to Year 6 for their wonderful insights.

The entertainment continued this week as we watched the ‘Year 6 and friends’ performance. Year 5 were represented by Sean and Eden. Well done boys; your hard work and commitment were evident. We also watched the year 4 drummers this afternoon. Many of the year 5s were tapping away as the rhythms from last year’s learning came back to them!

On Thursday, the children visited their new classroom and teacher where they had a great time building newspaper tables. During this time, some of year 5 were asked to speak to the parents of our new reception children to explain what it is like to come to our school. They represented us wonderfully and showed how ready they are to be in year 6.

Have a great weekend.

Fantastic Year 6 SATS results

Well done to our Year 6 children who have achieved fabulous SATS results. 100% of our children achieved the national expected standard in Reading, Writing and Maths. This is a huge achievement and well above the national average of 64%. At present we are waiting for verification of the % of pupils who reached the higher levels in each subject.  Thank you to all the parents and teaching staff who supported the children. A special thanks goes to Miss Donatantonio and Mrs McNamara for their hard work and commitment.

Today all children will receive their end of year reports. We hope you enjoy reading them!

Sports Day

What a fantastic end to our week.  The children gave their all and had a great day. It was wonderful to welcome so many of you during lunch time to enjoy a pic nic as a family. I hope you enjoy these pictures of the day and have a wonderful weekend.

Year 5 29/6/2018

Another busy week has flown by and what a scorcher it was! Despite the heat, the children have maintained concentration to complete some wonderful learning. In English we have focused on sentence structure, we have solved percentage problems in Maths and our cam toys are in production.

On Tuesday, eleven members of year 5 attended a rounders tournament at Dame Alice Owens School. They showed fantastic sportsmanship at all times and their skills were fantastic. Well done to Sean, Alessandro, Francesco, Jaineel, Will, Sofia, Ciara, Keira C, Maria, Sophie and Claudia; you represented Pope Paul well. Like last Thursday, many of year 5 visited Nicholas Breakspear. This time it was to perform in the choir. We took this opportunity to give Mr Linanne our letters of thanks for our taster day.

This morning, we attended mass at OLSV for the Feast of St Peter and St Paul. Year 5 behaved reverently throughout and Kiera C, Will and Claudia read beautifully- well done.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the summer fayre

Year 5 22/6/18

We have been thoroughly entertained this week in Year 5. On Tuesday, we were treated to a dress rehearsal of the Year 6 production. Year 5 were a fabulous audience and I hope they were picking up tips for their turn next year! We also got the chance to see the guitarists perform in a concert. Well done Thomas, Marco and Sara; your practise paid off.

On Thursday, we attended our taster day at Nicholas Breakspear School. We were warmly welcomed and had the chance to experience life in secondary school. The children’s behaviour was exemplary and they were a credit to the school.

We had a creative and colourful end to our week as the children came in with their craziest hair creations.  They looked amazing!

IMG_1487 IMG_1488 IMG_1489

Year 5 have been building their understanding of percentages this week. We have been making connections to decimals and fractions to help us calculate percentages of different amounts.

In English, we have been deconstructing texts involving a predator and prey. We have analysed different sentence structures to see how we can create similar effects in our own writing next week.

The children have been learning all about mechanisms with cams and they have now designed their own moving toys. They have considered which cam will suit their design best and we will begin making them next week.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Mass and Blessed Sacrament Procession

Well done to all our wonderful children who took part in our celebrations on Friday. Your reverence and participation throughout the whole service was exemplary; you  were a credit to your parents and to our school. Thank you to Father Shaun for leading us in worship and to all the teachers for preparing the children so well.

Carnival Time!

Thank you to all the children and parents who came to support our school today! The children looked fabulous in their poppy T shirts and the paper poppies and the crowns added a splash of colour to our walking float. I hope you all had a chance to visit the art exhibition and see some of the beautiful paintings on display. Well done to our football team for reaching the final today and playing so passionately for the school. We are all very proud of you! Thank you to all the staff for their hard work today. A special thanks goes to Miss Pringle for organising the football team, Mrs Theo for preparing the art work for the exhibition and Mrs McNamara and Mrs Joyce for driving car loads of equipment to and from school early this morning! A real team effort!
