UK Parliament and Anti Bullying Week

This week we have taken part in two very important national events: UK Parliament Week and Anti bullying week.

For UK Parliament Week, we used the resources sent by the Parliament Education service to understand the structure of Parliament.

In class, Year 5 learnt about what a referendum is and set one up for the school to vote in. The key question was whether we should change our school name to St Paul the VI. All day, the children and staff have been voting. We also opened up the polls to parents at the end of the school day. It will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

We were also visited by Councillor Peter Knell and his wife June. It gave the children a chance to ask questions about what is is like to be in local government and hear all about their trip to Buckingham Palace!

Today, year 5 led the school assembly to explain what they had learnt and and to try and persuade the votes in the referendum. Well done to all of the children. This assembly was arranged with little time and they had only minutes to practise.

On Wednesday, we took part in an anti bullying workshop. The children used drama to appreciate what they were good at and thought about what to do if they were bullied.

With such a busy week, the children have really earned their weekend!

 

 

Autumn 2 Week 1- Year 5

Welcome back. I was wonderful to see the children back in school looking refreshed and ready for another half term of learning.

In English, we have begun our learning on our new text ‘Weslandia’. Along with the rest of the school, we have been exploring the characters and locations. Year 5 made some interesting inferences about our main character, Wesley, and his tormentors.

In science, our focus is now on materials and their properties. Miss Clapp ran an experiment looking at the thermal conductivity of different materials. The children then related this to items around the home and why that material was chosen.

This week was ‘other faith’ week in R.E. We learnt about the Jewish celebration of Shabbat. We spent time looking at what it is about and why Jews take part. Year 5 then debated the advantages and disadvantages of Shabbat. There were some very interesting points of view and they children could really see the value in this focused family time.

Today in art, we looked at the artist Heaton Cooper. We evaluated his landscapes and appreciated the depth and perspective of his paintings. We then used the vanishing point to practise this skill ourselves.

One World Week

It has been a remarkably busy week to end a jam packed half term. With all we’ve done, it’s hard to believe it was only 8 weeks ago we started this new school year.

This week we celebrated One World Week by learning about Brazil. The children brought in a range of impressive home learning to show what the found out from their research. We focused heavily on the geography of the country and made interesting comparisons to our ongoing geography location, Scandinavia. Year 5 not only identified how they were physically different but also compared their human geography.

In addition, Year 5 looked at deforestation; an important issue facing the Amazon. The children were able to identify the effects of human actions on this landscape. One way we did this, was through an experiment involving examples of land with vegetation, and one without. By pouring on water to simulate rain, it was possible to see the land erosion and the contamination of the water that exists when man removed all vegetation.

In art, year 5 created  pictures of the famous Rio landmark, Christ the redeemer. These were created through mixed medium. The background used water colours whilst the statue itself was drawing with different shading pencils. I’m sure those of you who saw them at the celebration morning today will agree that they are amazing.

For a sweet treat, brigadeiros were on the menu this week as the children made the common and popular children’s confectionery from Brazil. There were a lot of chocolate smeared faces walking out of the door on Thursday!

As we are a fair trade school, we explored it’s impact in Brazil. We learnt about coffee farmers and the safety being a fair trade farmer provided. The children were quite stunned to hear how much the farmers earned.

A real highlight of the week was welcoming parents into class. Firstly, for our mass on Wednesday. The children were reverent throughout and reflected beautifully on how we treat our planet. Thank you to father Shaun for leading us in celebrating and reflecting on this important issue. We would also like to thank Michael, our seminarian. He put in a lot of time to make sure the mass and children were prepared. We are very lucky to have him as part of our school and parish community.

Finally, celebration morning. It was great to see the children share their learning with you and take you on in a Brazil themed quiz. We had some very proud looking year 5s as they discovered they were victorious and we were quite surprised at how many parents I could see cheating!

Pilgrimage To Rome and St Paul VI Celebration Day

Today the school has been filled with excitement and joy as we celebrated the canonization of Pope Paul VI. We started the day with an assembly where everyone was presented with a St Paul VI prayer card. The children then enjoyed an extra break and Fairtrade treat in the sunshine. Following the theme of peace, the children spent the morning creating flags, designs, sketches and mosaics as well as continuing their research on Pope Paul VI. This afternoon we released doves of peace in the playground as a symbol of our continuing mission, following the charism of Pope Paul, to support peace and justice for all. Our pilgrimage to Rome to share in this very special moment was inspiring and uplifting. We felt privileged to be able to represent our school community in this important event. Father Shaun also attended the Mass in St Peter’s Square and we were all invited by Alex (our Seminarian)to visit the English College for Mass and then refreshments, enjoying the view of Rome from the rooftop terrace! Throughout the weekend we remembered our Pope Paul School Community and prayed for the continuing success of our school. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful group of staff who are happy to make a financial and time commitment in support of our community. Thank you ladies!

Autumn 1 Week 7- Year 5

It was an exciting end to our week today! We celebrated the canonisation of St Paul VI with a wonderful assembly followed by an extra playtime and a treat.

The rest of the day was spent completing art work based around St Paul VI’s famous quotes about peace and making flags. To end the day, we watched the release of doves over our school. It was an experience I’m sure the children will always remember.

It was wonderful to see you all at parent consultations this week. Some of you were able to meet Miss Clapp, a student teacher who will be with us until Christmas. Next week is One World Week where you will be welcomed into our classroom twice. Firstly for our class mass on Wednesday and secondly for celebration morning on Friday.

Autumn 1 Week 6- Year 5

This week, we have been preparing for the canonisation of Pope Paul VI by learning about his life and what steps are involved in being declared a saint. We have also begun creating portraits of him and will complete these on Monday.

We combined our history and geography skills this week to read OS maps and locate places in Hertfordshire with Saxon names to see where they settled.

In maths, we have been learning Roman numerals up to M and using them in different combinations to create different dates. We also investigated which years would have more numerals than others and explained why.

Unfortunately, there were some photocopier issues this week. This means I was unable to print out a breakdown of the home learning. There is a whole school task provided to write a prayer to St Paul VI. Sheets for this were given with the home learning folders. Weekly spelling sentences should be completed as usual.

I have signed the children up to another site that provides maths learning by using games. They have the password for this in their home learning books. This is not compulsory part of home learning but a dojo prize will be awarded every Friday for the top 3 players! 20 mins on readtheory.org  should also be completed this week.

Autumn 1 Week 5- Year 5

It has been another busy week of learning. In maths we have been using our place value knowledge to round numbers and solve problems. We have also been counting forwards and backwards across 0 using our knowledge of negative numbers.

In writing, Year 5 have been learning all about expanded noun phrases. They then used this knowledge to create some impressive introductions to their explorer guides. It was wonderful to see the children refer back to our previous poetry unit to use some fantastic vocabulary.

In R.E, we have been learning about the four sources of revelation and how we know God through them. This led to some interesting discussions about family traditions and our own human experiences. Year 5 also looked at Scripture to see how God is described and to understand the metaphors that are used.

I was particularly impressed with the children in drumming this week, as was our drumming teacher, Caz. They have learnt a range of rhythms very quickly and are practising performing in increasing complex rounds. Well done Year 5!

Autumn 1 Week 4- Year 5

It has been another busy week in year 5. We have continued to build our place value knowledge by counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10 and have begun our new English unit based around an exploration text. In RE, we have been discussing the Blessed Sacrament and looked at how the Catholic belief towards it is different from other Christian denominations. We have also been learning about St Vincent De Paul and how his beliefs shaped his life.

The highlight of our week was, of course, our trip to the Chiltern Open Air Museum. We began the day by taking part in an Anglo Saxon Workshop. Cara-Jessie took on the role of the Earl and kindly let us into her homestead. During this time, we learned about Saxon runes, games, made jewelry and had the chance to handle some objects that told us more about Saxon life. Year 5 also learnt the important skill of thatching and perfected their hammer skills! At the end of our session, we learnt about Saxon beliefs and how they converted to Christianity from Paganism. For this, we had a visit from a very important visitor- a bishop portrayed by Mikey.

We were lucky enough to enjoy fantastic weather and so ate outside. After this, we headed down to the playground to burn some energy.

We then made our way to our archaeology workshop. Here we used a range of historical skills to answer questions and learn about the past. This included digging for artifacts and looking for evidence in artificial poo!

The coach was very quiet on the way home with most of Year 5 dosing off! It was a fantastic day and we even caught glimpses of Horrible Histories being filmed.

 

From next week, P.E will be on Thursdays instead of Tuesdays to accommodate a rugby coach working with another year group.

Year 5 Autumn 1 Week 3

It has been another busy week in Year 5 and we certainly finished on a high. On Tuesday the children attended mass in school to celebrate the beginning of the school year. Alex gave us a fantastic visual representation of the trinity, which we will be studying more in depth later this half term.

Today the children performed exceptionally well to tell the school all about space and how it our responsibility to take care of the gift of creation. They spoke clearly and I was very proud of them all. Enjoy the pictures.

Autumn 1 Week 2- Year 5

We began our first full week with a visit from Alex, a seminarian staying at OLSV for the month of September. Year 5 became quite the investigative reporters as they asked a range of interesting questions to understand how his beliefs have shaped his life. It was really interesting to find out more about what it takes to become a priest and we were all surprised by the amount of languages that had to be learnt.

On Tuesday, we had our first P.E lesson of the year. We will be focusing on team building and problem solving this half term. The children worked together to strategise and made great improvements in their communication skills.

On Thursday, Kaz returned for a drumming session. We will continue with these lessons for the next half term and build on the skills they learnt in year 4. The class had a lot of fun and showed off some impressive rhythms.

Thursday was also Roald Dahl Day. We celebrated this by taking part in a hunt that required knowledge of his books and place value knowledge.

Year 5 also celebrated this day by creating some beautiful free verse poetry inspired by ‘The Witching Hour’, the title of the first chapter in the BFG.

Today I sent home the home learning. If there are any difficulties, I am available to help the children during Monday lunchtime.
