The highlight of our week was our trip to the Science Museum. The children were very excited to go on the train into London and experience the ‘Turn it Up’ gallery. This was a music based area and it provided them with the chance to listen to and make music. It also asked them to consider how music can impact our emotions. Well done to Anna and Archie for speaking about our trip in assembly today.

Thank you to Anna’s, Erin’s and Federico’s parents who assisted on the trip.

We’ll be on the train again next week for our trip to Westminster Cathedral for the Diocesan Advent Service on Wednesday.

Have a good weekend!

This week as part of Anti-Bullying week, we have focussed on race, racism and what it means to be anti-racist.  We discussed how we can stop racism in our actions  and how we can be a good friend by promoting kindness and ending racism. The children created their own ‘say NO to racism posters’ understanding that racism hurts feelings – it makes people feel sad, lonely and confused; racism is unfair and they should feel proud of what makes them feel different and special.

Our English learning using the Spider and the Fly has continued. We have looked at ‘alien sentences’ to help build up our sentence structure knowledge and identify what aspects of a sentence are missing in in order to make them complete.

In Maths, we completed our work on using compensation to add and have been working hard on subtracting 2-digit numbers mentally.  In Science, we have begun our new topic on forces and magnets. On Thursday, we took part in an investigation to test what surface created the most friction.

We have also begun our RHE curriculum and the children learnt to unpack the Sacraments of Baptism and
Reconciliation, understanding that through prayer, the Sacraments and their friendships and relationships with others, will bring them even closer to Jesus.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Remember, Class Trip to the Science Museum is on Tuesday 21st November. Please check your school comms account to give permission etc. Children should wear their full school uniform.

The focus this week has been remembrance.  The children brought in photos and pictures of loved ones and wrote the names of family members and friends who have died and as a class we had an act of worship to pray for them in class and outside.  The children showed such reverence during this time and we thank Grace, Noemi, Iustin and Hugo who lead us in prayer. We also took part in a school pilgrimage today, where we went from class to class and looked at their remembrance displays.

In Maths we have continued with our work on addition and subtraction using the Think 10 and Think 100 method.  The children particularly enjoyed the dice game of Zero the Hero!

In PE we have begun our topic of gymnastics looking at travelling and balancing.  The children worked hard in their groups using the PE apparatus in the Main Hall.

In English we have been looking at providing evidence for our answers when reading. We thought about what opinions we have of the spider and the fly and why we have them.

In Recorders we have begun learning for our recorder concert.  There are a number of things occurring in Year 3 this half term.  Please put these dates in your diaries:

Tuesday 21st November: Class Trip to the Science Museum for a Music Workshop

Wednesday 29th November: Class Trip to Westminster Cathedral to participate in the Advent Service.

Monday 11th December: Egyptian Day in school (The children will be transported to Ancient Egypt and are asked to dress up in their best Egyptian outfits in preparation for their day of learning all about the Ancient Egyptians!)

Have a lovely weekend.

Although this week’s weather has meant a change in lunchtime routine, the children have enjoyed their time inside and outside using the school hall as another area to enjoy playtime where table tennis, lego and drawing are available to them as well.

In Maths the children have moved from working on mental addition using ‘think 10’ to ‘think 100’ and are learning to explore the various ways this strategy can assist them in mental addition.

In English, we have been using the poem ‘The Spider and the Fly’ to build up our grammatical understanding. We have begun by familiarising ourselves with the text by performing it.

In art, the children have spent time using clay to make their 3D art sculpture of their favourite Roald Dahl character…here are some examples.  Can you spot Matilda/the tortoise from Esio Trot/the crocodile?  Next week, the children will spend time painting their sculptures when they are dry.

In Recorders, the children have been revising the notes learnt last half term and we hope to be ready for a small concert to show you nearer Christmas.  Date of concert T.B.C.  This week Corrado, the Italian teacher, spent time teaching the children about the seasons and numbers 1-20.

Today in science, we investigated if having longer legs meant you could jump further. We will look at our results next week.

In the month of November, we remember people who have died. If you know some who has died, please send in their photograph (write their name on the back) so we can include them in our daily prayers and add their name/picture to our class prayer corner.

Thank you.

Have a wonderful weekend.  Enjoy the fireworks!

Our final week of the half term has been jam-packed with learning all about Pakistan. We were so impressed with the quality of your home learning and research- well done, Year 3! You came with so much knowledge to our lessons.Throughout the week, we explored this country in a variety of ways. We have learnt about its geography: the population, currency, mountains, lakes and rivers. We have discovered its music and dancing; a link to balaay, balaay can be found below! We also spent time learning about famous Pakistani people, like Malala Yousafazi and Afraqat Ali Khan.  A real highlight was the cooking. Year 3 made some chapatis with the help of Ariela’s mum and alongside this the children ate chicken biryani, kebab and sweet rice made by Ariela’s mum. What a treat that was! Added to this they sampled Mango juice and Guava juice.

Today they also sampled Asian snacks which disappeared very quickly!  This treat came after they performed a wonderful class assembly.  Thank you for supporting your child with their words which they learnt well.

It was a pleasure to meet with so many of you at parents evening on a Tuesday and Thursday. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your children over the past half term and look forward to continuing to work with you over the coming year.

Friday 13th October 2023

It has been another busy week in Year 3.

Our English learning was all about adverbials of time and place. This will really help to give our writing cohesion when we come to do our newspaper report next week.

In RE we have looked at the actions and words of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The children were excellent in showing their understanding of the link between this part of the mass and the Last Supper.

On Tuesday the children had their first Italian lesson and they learnt greetings.  In Art the children have chosen their favourite Roald Dahl character which they will be sculpting in their art lessons for the rest of the term.

In PE we have continued with our focus on dodging.  Thank you to Ayrabella who took these photos during the lesson.

Next week is One World Week. Our focus country is Pakistan.

Our English learning this week has involved using the present perfect tense. We took sections of The Tortoise and the Hare story in the simple past and changed them into the present perfect. Take a look at our freeze frames that we used to develop our ideas for writing.

In Science we improved our knowledge about nutrients and developed our teamwork skills. In groups, the children looked at what nutrients give to our body and they then presented what they had learned.

On Tuesday the children met Corrado who will be coming into year 3 to teach the children Italian once a week. In Maths the children have worked hard on reinforcing their understanding of counting on in ones, tens, hundreds and back in ones, tens and hundreds. The children have played many games to assist them in their understanding.

In our history this week the children have looked at the structure of the Egyptian society and wrote about the role of the vizier, the chief treasurer and the general of armies who were the important officials who carried out the orders of the Pharaohs.

In art, the children looked at ‘exaggeration’ using the many pictures created by Quentin Blake as inspiration.  I was bowled away by their artistic skills in this task.

Well done to the children who took part in the Golf competition this week at the Furzefield.  They wore their medals with such pride.

Mr Gavin Nicola, our guitar teacher, also wanted to let all parents know that he has spaces available if your child is interested in taking up guitar as a musical instrument. He led a concert this week and the children listened attentively and took part with such enthusiasm. He has asked that if you are interested to get in touch with the school office and he would get back in touch with you.

Have a restful weekend.

This week, the children have been continuing with their work in Maths on regrouping.

In English, we have been building up our understanding of newspapers and the features of the genre. Next week we will explore that grammar aspects of writing this type of recount.

In PE the focus on dodging has continued and the class have been learning to shield a ball from an opponent and turn in different ways whilst in possession.

A highlight this week was in RE the children worked in groups and looked at the symbols used during the liturgy of the Eucharist. They dressed the altar and explained what each item is and means.

Another week has whizzed by!

In Maths the children have been working hard in their fluency lessons revising number work and place value.  In Maths lessons the children have continued in building upon their place value understanding to notice what changes and what does not when they count in ones, tens and hundreds from a given number within the number range.
They have been provided with a variety of opportunities to represent numbers in different ways
using resources, pictorially, using language and symbols.

Our English unit has come to an end with the children completing their own fables. They have thought carefully about the conjunctions and speech dialogue to create some wonderful pieces. Next week, we will move on to our next genre: newspaper reports. These will be based on The Tortoise and the Hare so you could refresh your memory of the story:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks1–ks2-aesops-fables-the-hare-and-the-tortoise/zbmj92p

Our RE learning has been focused on the Sacraments of initiation. The children looked at symbols of each of them and what they mean. We also learnt about the four parts of the mass. It would be wonderful for them to see each of these in the handout at mass on Sunday.

In PE the children have been working on developing their skills of dodging and in French learnt the names of various parts of their bodies.  We finished the lesson by learning the ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’ song in french which they really enjoyed.  The Egyptians is a well liked topic and as such, we have learnt two new songs: Two piles of stones and Tutankhamun. ( This song, with its distinctive Egyptian flavour, introduces the legendary child king Tutankhamun.) The children have learnt how the ancient Egyptian civilisation began and have begun to learn about the Kingdoms of Egypt.

As part of our cup stacking team building activity, the children have been busy practising building a pyramid stack and pairs competed against others in the class to find out who could stack the quickest!  If your child asks you for 6 cups, make sure they are not breakable!

This afternoon we were treated to a panto performance in the hall. What a great way to end the week!

Can we remind you to ensure that your child’s reading book is in their bag as a number of children forgot their reading logs and reading books this week.  Thank you!

Have a lovely weekend.

Friday 15th September, 2023

It was lovely to see many of you at Meet the Teacher meeting yesterday afternoon.  The information shown and handed out yesterday is on the Year 3 Class Page. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

This week, the children have been busy with their learning!

In Maths, the children have been continuing with a variety of opportunities to represent numbers in different
ways using resources, pictorially, using language and symbols. These opportunities have allowed them to experience playful regrouping (partitioning) to strengthen their understanding of place value. They fully immersed themselves in the games they have been learning too.

In English, we have continued our learning on fables and have worked hard to tell one by using a storymap. We have also been considering our conjunctions and trying to use a range of them. The children were fantastic in picking out why certain animals are chosen in fables and could see the themes such as ‘sly foxes’ and ‘loyal dogs’. We investigated a set of fables and looked for evidence of the characters through what they said and did.

In PE the class have started to look at invasion skills and worked together to support their trio/group with the set activities to complete.

This week we have also continued with our music lessons in learning the recorder.  They each have learnt how to hold the recorder and have played alongside some lovely musical pieces remembering the note B and reading the musical score whilst following the tune.

We have begun our French Unit and learnt ways to greet people using: bonjour, bonsoir, bonne-nuit and salut!

In Art, the children have been introduced looking at the work of artists Inbal Leitner and Rosie Hurley to see how they use their sketchbooks to develop characters and refine ideas.  The class then responded by filling a couple of pages in their sketchbooks with visual notes about what they were thinking and seeing. Some of the class explained why they had sketched their ideas and as a class, the children looked at each others’ ideas, an activity which they clearly enjoyed.

In RE, we reflected on how our new Reception class feels about starting a new school and how we want them to feel about being at Pope Paul. The children shared beautiful ideas about how we can make them feel welcome and have a sense of belonging through our words, actions and symbols. This was a great start to thinking about initiation and the sacraments of our church.
