Summer 2 Week 2

This week was Healthy Eating Week. Each day, we tasted different flavoured water to encourage us to drink more and stay hydrated. The children made posters to tell others about the importance of drinking. The most popular flavour water in Year 3 was mint and the overall school favourite was strawberry. On Monday, for Design and Technology, the children made their healthy sandwiches. It was great to see children adapting their plans to use wholemeal or brown bread and adding extra salads to make their sandwiches healthy. They then evaluated their sandwiches, thinking about what went well and what they would change next time. Thank you to all the children who sent in different fruits and to the Year 6 children who  helped to cut all of the fruit. The children enjoyed trying new fruits! The next food group we learnt about was protein and how we can vary the protein we eat. We also learnt about fibre and why it is important and identified food that contain fibre. Then we learnt about foods waste, the children have taken home a survey about food waste, please complete this and send it back.

In Maths, the children have been learning about tenths and how we record tenths as a decimal. The children were given the challenge of making a stick man, a tenth of me. The discussion between partners were great and they worked well to make a stickman of the correct height. Then the children lined up 10 stickmen to see if it was the same height as me and they were!

In English, the children have been using the skills they have learnt over the past few weeks to write adventure stories. I have enjoyed reading each one! They have captured the element of excitement in their stories and all of the stories make you want you to read on. They have included fronted adverbials, conjunctions, prepositions, similes and metaphors.

On Wednesday, Year 3 lead the class mass to celebrate their FIrst Holy Communion. The children sang and responded beautiful and their behaviour was excellent. Well done to the readers and the children who did the offertory procession. It was lovely to see some many of you there.

Week 1 Summer 2

In Maths, the children have been solving division problems with   regrouping and remainders. The children have learnt to use resources, draw pictures and use their multiplication facts to support their understanding.

 

In English, the children have been learning how to use and punctuate direct speech. They have been identifying synonyms for the word ‘said’. They have planned an adventure story that they will write next week.

 

In Design and Technology, the children made their magic boxes. They started with a net, folded it, cut it and decorated it. They look wonderful! Next we the children will evaluate their box against their design.

In Religion, the children learnt about parables. They listened to some parables in the Bible and thought about what the story was telling us. They then designed their own kingdom of heaven and explained why it was a great place to be.

On Thursday, the children led the Blessed Sacrament Procession and led the sing in church. They were prayerful at all times.

Well done to the choir who sang at the Wyllyotts Theatre!

Summer 1 Week 6

In Maths, the children have been solving division problems with and without remainders. They have used resources, drawn pictures and used their knowledge of timetables.

In English, the children have been using similes and metaphors to write descriptions. They have been learning to write a subordinate clause at the beginning and at the end of a sentence.

In Religion, we learnt about Pope Francis and how his beliefs impact on the things that he does. The children thought of other people we know and how they live as a friends of the Holy Spirit.

In Science, we learnt about how water is transported in a plant and planned an investigation to show this happening. The children also planned an investigate to prove that leaves evaporate water. We had our last tennis lesson with Mr Mills where the children applied all of the skills they have learnt this term.

On Thursday, the children were reverent and sang beautiful in the May procession. Thank you for the beautiful flowers.

On Friday we celebrated the feast of St Paul VI with a whole school mass followed by ice lollies.

This Saturday some of the children are making their First Holy Communion – D’hani, Brody, Mark, Raphaella, Jamie, Isabella P, Isabella B, Jack F, Connor, Hanna, Oliver, Jayden, Sophia P, Sophia DH, Eloise, Leo S and Dudley. I hope you have a wonderful day.

Summer 1 Week 5

This week was Spirituality week. on Monday we wrote a prayer for our prayer partner in Year 2. Then we met them in the Peace Garden and read our prayers to each other. On Tuesday, some of the Year 5 children led us in the Rosary. On Wednesday, we went on a nature walk to appreciate God’s world. On Thursday, we went to church for the feast of Ascension and then walked through the peace garden at church. Then the children took part in some prayer stations led by the Year 5 children.

In Maths, we have been learning to divide by sharing and grouping. The children have been using multiplication facts to support them when solving division questions. They have also been demonstrating an understanding of the problem by drawing a bar model.

In PE , we learnt how to serve in tennis. I was impressed with the children’s tennis skills.

In English, we finished watching Taking Flight, an adventure story. The children imagined they were one of the characters and wrote a diary entry using fronted adverbials.

In Design and Technology. The children practised cutting nets and making boxes in preparation for making their own magic box.

Year 3 took part in a Science workshop, the made sweets and slime.

Summer 1 Week 4

This week the children have been multiplying a two digit number by a one-digit number using regrouping and short multiplication. The children have worked hard to develop their skills and it is wonderful to see the children practising their timetables at home.

In English, we have started a new topic about adventure stories. We watched a video clip of an adventure story called ‘Taking Flight.’ Each day we have watched a little part of the clip and the children have been excited to watch the next part each day. We are learning about how adventure stories are page turners, they make you want to read more to find out what happens next. They have been writing expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases to describe the characters. They have also been using a thesaurus to find synonyms for words to make their writing interesting.

In Religion, we listened to Luke’s recount of Pentecost and then rewrote the story in our own words. Then they made flames to represent the Holy Spirit using coloured paper.

In PE, the children continued their lessons of Tennis. On Wednesday they learn how to play rounders and develop their teamwork skills.

Eight children from our class took part in the first Year 3 challenge. Out of 200 schools, our two teams came 18th and 23rd. One team will compete in the final at the end of May. Well done to Emily, Brody, Jayden, Emilia, Jack F, Gabriella, Oliver and Mark!

Summer 1 Week 3

The children took part in a skateboard workshop on Wednesday. I was impressed with how quickly they learnt new skills.

In Maths the children have been learning to multiply two digit numbers by a one-digit number by regrouping.

In preparation for the Coronation, the children learnt about King Charles III and made a fact file about his life. They learnt about his role as the king and the jobs he would do. Then the children made clay crowns and painted them. They look fantastic!

 

Well done to the children who sent in their home learning in on King Charles! It was great to hear the facts they had learnt. If you did not complete it, please send it in next week.

On Friday we had a wonderful celebration for the coronation. We decorated biscuits, ate ice lollies, sang songs and had a party. The children look great dressed in red, white and blue.

Summer 1 Week 2

This week the children finished writing their poems on The Magic Box about their own memories. Then they wrote the poems in neat for our class display. The children followed the structure that Kit Wright used by adding alliteration, prepositions and expanded noun phrases. In Art the children followed instructions to draw a treasure chest.

In Maths, the children have been solving problems by adding and subtracting fractions. They have demonstrated their understanding using resources and drawing pictures.

In Religion, the children imagined they were at the Resurrection and took turns asking and answering questions to one of the people who were there. They thought carefully about how people would have felt and what they might have thought.

Summer 1 Week 1

I hope you had a wonderful Easter holidays.

In English, we read and compared ‘Words are Ours’ and The Magic Box’ poems. Then the children practised reading and performing The Magic Box. They focused on reading with expression, emphasising key words and showing emotions in their face. Then the children used the items that they bought in from home to plan their own poem about their favourite memories. In Design and Technology, they began looking at boxes to support their planning and making of their own magic box.

In Maths, the children have been learning to add and subtraction fractions though problem solving. The children have used cubes and pictures to support their understanding.

In Religion, we have been focusing on Matthew’s story of the Resurrection. The children analysed the text and identified the beliefs that Catholics have frim this story.

For PE for this term, Mr Mills will be teaching the children tennis. The children enjoyed their first lesson and I was impressed with their ball skills. PE days continue to be on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Spring 2 Week 6

On Monday, we had fun walking through the muddy fields to raise money for Turkey and Syria. It was a beautiful day to go walking. The children enjoyed listening to the different sounds. Thank you to everyone who has donated.

In Religion, we read Matthew’s story of the Last Supper then the children made a table with Jesus and his disciples at the Last Supper. Then we listened to the story of Good Friday and made pictures to represent the story.

Spring 2 Week 5

This week the children have finished writing their speeches to persuade people to stop using plastic. The children used a range of persuasive language and thought carefully about the phrases they were using to encourage people to change. The children demonstrated a wonderful understanding about how we can work together to build a better world.

In Maths the children have been finding fractions of amounts. They used resources and drew bar models to help them solve problems.

In Geography, the children were learning about the consequences of an earthquake. They looked closely at world maps and labelled the continents.

In Religion, the children have been learning about the events during Holy Week and retold the story of Palm Sunday.

Ruth’s mum in Year 2 came in to talk to us about her job as a nurse. The children asked fantastic questions and learnt the importance of Science in her job.
