Year 2 Blog Week 23

The children brought their favourite Bible characters to life this week as we celebrated World Book Day and The Year of the Word.  All of the costumes were brilliant and Year 2 proudly showed off their costumes at a whole school assembly.  After assembly we had great fun discussing our favourite stories and authors. It was wonderful to hear the children talking about books and reading with such enthusiasm.

This week the children put their science hats on and looked at different materials and their properties. We know that some materials are chosen for specific uses based on their properties. Plastic can be thin and transparent or thick and opaque.  The children investigated the flexibility of different plastic bottles. The results were very interesting.

In other news… we received a very special parcel in the post… A beautiful butterfly growing kit. We prepared the butterfly larvae and we are looking forward to observing the changes over the next few weeks.

Year 2 Blog Week 22

What a busy first week back it has been! It was wonderful to meet with all the Mums and Dads at Parents’ Evening this week. We hope you enjoyed celebrating all the learning in the books.

This week Year 2 took part in a very special KS1 Act of Worship for Ash Wednesday and to mark the start of Lent. Lent is a time when we pray, give up treats and do kind things for other people, as we prepare to celebrate the great feast of Easter. Year 2 thought very carefully about their Lenten promises and created a beautiful display for our Sacred space in the classroom. In Maths we have been concentrating on telling the time. We pretended to be clocks, turning clockwise and anti-clockwise. There were lots of hands turning … half turns, full turns, quarter turns. Everyone used great reasoning to prove their times.

In English we are focusing on the book The Tin Forest as part of our whole school writing project. Year 2 have started their junk modelling and have created some wonderful collage tin creatures.

Year 2 Blog Week 21

It has been another busy week in Year 2. On Monday we were unfortunately unable to visit the Jain Temple as a fallen tree was blocking the road. This trip will be rescheduled for next term. Year 2 attended a Judaism workshop as part of our Other Faiths Week 2020. The children learnt all about the Feast of Passover and why Jewish people eat Matzah bread for their Seder meal.

This week we started to plant up our allotment beds with our potatoes, onions and garlic. We look forward to seeing the signs of new life and growth next term.

On Tuesday we celebrated Safer Internet Day 2020 – Together for a better Internet. The children explored E-safety and Cyberbullying through a wonderful tale – ‘Troll Stinks’ by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. Year 2 identified all the things the Billy Goats did wrong with the mobile phone they found. Most importantly the children identified what Baby Troll should have done when she received the nasty messages… Block, Tell and Eject!

Well done Year 2 for all your hard work this term!

Year 2 Blog Week 20

This week the children completed their imaginative stories in English. Everyone thought very carefully about the story language they would use as well as all of the verbs, adjectives and adverbs. There are definitely some future authors in our midst.

This week in Maths we have been focusing on subtraction and using our strategy of drawing numberlines to count back. 57 – 30 = ?

This week we made the most of the glorious sunshine and we put our wellies on and tended to our class garden and allotment beds. It was hard, tiring work but the signs of new life and the beauty of nature made it all worth while. We are looking forward to planting our potatoes, onions and elephant garlic next week!

Year 2 Blog Week 19

Year 2 have enjoyed a week of creative learning. We took part in a wonderful workshop all about being a Cyber Hero. The children discussed the world of online gaming and all the fun that can be had as well as the dangers that are online. We explored the issues of online bullying, age appropriate games, in-game chats and pop-up advertisements.

A Cyber Hero does the right thing online. We POP – pause our play if something online makes us feel sad, upset or worried and we tell a trusted adult. We say NO to cyber bullying! Playing age appropriate games are the only games worth playing.

Our topic in History is Changes within living memory – Communication past and present. We have been learning about carrier pigeon messengers and the children created some beautiful collage carrier pigeons.

In Maths we have continued work on addition and subtraction, focusing on our ‘Think 10’ strategy.

43 – 6 = ?

How would you use Think 10 to solve this calculation?

Welcome back everyone!

I hope you had a lovey Christmas and I wish you every blessing for this new year ahead.

It has been a busy first week back in Year 2. We have been focusing on the celebration of the feast of the Epiphany. The children examined the story of the wise men visiting the baby Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel and we thought very carefully about what their gifts revealed about Jesus.

During our class Act of Worship, the children thought about what gift they will bring to our school and their homes this year.

Congratulations to Vincent – 1st Place winner of the Knights of St Columba’s Nativity Art Competition.

Year 2 Blog Week 15

To start our week, we attended the Sleeping Beauty Pantomime in the Wyllyots theatre – Oh no we didn’t! OH YES WE DID!

On Wednesday, we put our Christmas jumpers on and we sat down together for a delicious Christmas meal. After lunch, we gathered in the hall for our annual school talent show. Pope Paul definitely has talent! Year 2 had two amazing entries in this years talent show – Christmas Jokes and A Christmas poem. Congratulations to Ellis and Thomas for winning the show.

As the wonder of Christmas surrounds us, may your spirit be renewed with special joy at the miracle of his birth.

Thank you for your generous gifts and beautiful cards.

Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas and happy New Year.

Year 2 Blog Week 14

I’m Gonna Shine!

It has been a joyous week in school. It was lights, camera and action for our KS 1 Christmas Nativity. Gloria, the brightest star in all of heaven, took centre stage on a tricky journey to Bethlehem as she lit the way for the three wise men. As Mary, Joseph and the shepherds also made the long journey, we met Gabriel, the other angels and an angry King Herod.  Happily Mary and Joseph reached Bethlehem safely and we celebrated the birth of baby Jesus. Year 2 along with Year 1, acted, sang and danced brilliantly and they should all be very proud of themselves. Thank you to everyone for attending and for your generous donations to The Passage.

Have a peaceful weekend,

Miss Davey
