Did you know….

Early in 2019, a cotton seed was successfully germinated on the moon. However, it did not live very long because during the lunar night, which lasts for approximately 13.5 days, the temperature plummeted and it was too cold for the seedling to survive.

If humans were to ever colonise Mars, they would need to be able to grow crops in order to survive. However, the extreme cold, low atmospheric pressure and high radiation environment would mean that the plants would need to be grown in a heated transparent enclosure if they were to grow to maturity and provide crops.

Get Growing on Mars!!!!

Design and make a Martian ‘grow pod’.

Use recycled materials to create a place where a seed could germinate and grow in a place like Mars.

Think about the conditions that a seed needs to germinate and grow.

I can’t wait to see what you design and create!

WALT: Write similes and descriptive phrases

Read the poem, The Eagle by Alfred Tennyson. What do you think Tennyson is talking about when he says ‘crooked hands’?

Sometimes poems are a bit like puzzles. We have to work out what they mean.

Tennyson uses similes in his poem. Similes are a type of figurative language. They are used to describe things, by comparing them to something else. Similes may use ‘like’ or ‘as’ to compare two things. Similes make our descriptions more interesting for reader. Example: His eyes were as black as coal.

Complete similes about the eagle and write as many words and phrases to describe the eagle as you can think of.

Delicious. That was simply delicious. She very rarely came across a strawberry, but whenever she did she always made the most of it. Chewing through the sweet, juicy flesh, she savoured every mouthful.

Now, though, she was full, and slowly eased herself (shell and all) out of the hole she had made in the side of the strawberry. It was time to explore another part of the garden…

Continue the story of the snail. Try to describe everything she might come across during her sloooooow journey! Use plenty of adjectives in your sentences.

Science

Create a title page for our new topic… Plants.
Include drawings and the following key vocabulary: seeds, bulbs, water, light, temperature, growth, germination, soil, nutrients. Native plants: grass, clover, daisy, buttercup, dandelion, holly, daffodil, tulip. Plants we grow: lettuce, tomato, radish, bean and pumpkin.

You all received an envelope containing a plastic bag and 3 Runner Beans. Place the beans inside the plastic bag and add some water. Attach this bag to a sunny window and observe how the beans sprout and grow over the coming days. This process is called germination.

Start a bean diary in your sketch books. Sketch the changes you observe everyday. Take pictures and email them to me and let me know how it grows….

Year 2 Blog Week 25

There were plenty of busy bees in Year 2 this week, working hard, preparing the vegetable beds and flower beds. In English, we completed our final piece of writing on The Tin Forest. The children put some wonderful twists in their versions of the story. In Maths, we looked at doubling and halving and the children worked well solving some money problems.

Our clay pots came out of the kiln ready for a splash of colour.

Please see the School newsletter for details on arrangements for daily learning. Packs of books and resources have been sent home.

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend and a lovely Mothering Sunday.

Make sure to keep in contact via the Year 2 class blog and email address.

Take care,

Miss Davey
