Summer 2 Week 1

Welcome back, I hope you all had a wonderful half term. We have been busy in Year 2 planting vegetables,  learning about the different parts of flowers and what seeds do. We have also learnt about germination and are observing the germination of mustard seeds, cress and runner beans in class. We are really looking forward to our class trip next week, where we will be visiting the Knebworth House walled garden and taking part in a plant workshop.

In P.E. we have been busy preparing for sports day and are learning how to field and bowl in cricket – aiming at the wicket (swat the fly).

In Religion we have learnt about parables. We have listened to the Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son and The Mustard Seed and thought about what the stories were telling us.

On Thursday we took part in the Blessed Sacrament Procession and were prayerful at all times.

Remember our class trip is on Tuesday and the children will need to wear the P.E. kit and have a hat and packed lunch. Football and Tennis club will also start next week.

The children have worked extremely hard this week and have now finished their SATs. I am very proud of them all.

In the afternoons, the children have been busy gardening, watching the nesting blue tits in the peace garden, sketching and taking part in the Spirituality Week activities. They have also enjoyed a science workshop about changing states and their swimming lesson.

Have a lovely weekend,

This week the children have been revising 3D shape, the four operations and factions. They have worked hard to develop their skills and use the strategies they had been taught.

In English, the children have published their dragon writing and completed comprehension papers. I am extremely pleased with their writing and their inference and retrieval skills.

We have also enjoyed gardening and using the jungle gym.

Summer 1 Week 3

To celebrate National Sports week the children took part in a scooter workshop on Wednesday. I was impressed with their control, speed and confidence. Well done. They have also enjoyed swimming and doing the daily mile.

The children have learnt about King Charles III  in preparation for the coronation. They have made succession family trees, coronation cards and learnt about King Charles III roles and responsibilities.

Well done to the children who sent in their home learning in on King Charles III. It was great to hear the facts they had learnt. If you did not complete it, please send it in next week.

Today we had a wonderful celebration for the coronation. We decorated biscuits, ate ice lollies, sang songs and had a party. The children look great dressed in red, white and blue.

Please ensure your child wears PE kit to school on Tuesday and Wednesday and that they do not bring toys to school.

Also the swimming instructors have politely asked that the children bring swimming goggles and hats for their lesson, that they wear swimming costumes (not bikinis or sports shorts) and that they remove earrings. Thank you.

Summer 1 Week 2

This week the children received a letter about a dragon that has been spotted in Potters Bar, which was caught on CCTV outside our school! The children have been gathering clues and writing about their findings. Watch out for the dragon this weekend.

Our Art lesson this week has been inspired by the dragon too.  The children have sketched dragons and designed detailed dragon eyes.

In Maths, the children have been solving time problems and identified properties of 2D shapes.

In PE, the children have been learning to hit forehand shots in tennis.

Please see the newsletter for the whole school home learning project about the Kings coronation.

Have a wonderful Easter

Spring 2 Week 5

In Art this week we have experimented with print making techniques. Firstly we made flower stencils from foam sheets and used acrylic paint to create abstract pictures and then we used carbon paper to create mono prints of our sketches into our Art books.

On Wednesday Ruth’s mum taught us about how she uses Science in her job as a mental health nurse. She works in A&E to help people who are feeling very unhappy. Sometimes she has to test their blood to see if they have an injury, an infection, are dehydrated or to see if they are suffering from stress or lack of sleep. Thank you for visiting us.

In English we have been writing diaries in the past tense based on the story ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ and in RE we have begun to sequence the events of Holy Week.

Spring 2 Week 4

As part of Science  week each class were asked to send messages in different ways around the school. Year 2 sent messages using their own marble mazes. Next week the children will be planning and building Rube Goldberg models that will reveal messages. Please send in any cardboard rolls/tubes or boxes.

On Tuesday, Joe’s mum taught us how scientists can also be detectives! We had a mystery to solve…someone had taken Mrs Carey’s mug and had left a note asking for money for it’s return! We tested the pens of different teachers to find out who’s pen wrote the note, using chromatography paper. The children were very excited when they solved the mystery and discovered I had written the note!

We were also lucky enough to be visited by Anna’s mum and dad, who explained how they use Science in their jobs as vets, to care for sick or injured animals. We also identified and grouped animal skulls and looked at red and white blood cells of sick animals on the visualizer.

Today Jamie and Charlie’s mum visited with lots of different animals. We held some of them and learnt about different reptiles and invertebrates . Thank you to all the parents who shared their science knowledge with us.

Well done to Sive, Tara and all the Irish Dancers who entertained us  for St Patricks Day.

Have a great weekend

Spag.com – a SATs SPAG test has been set. The only terminology they will be unfamiliar with is adverb (this is only for one question). An adverb is a word that describes a verb (doing word). For example He ate his breakfast quickly. The word ‘quickly’ is an adverb as it tells us how he ate (the verb) his breakfast.

Reading – please read and sign your reading records.

Mathletics – mulitplication and division activities have been set.
