Week 11

We have had a fun week of learning! In Maths we have been ordering the days of the week and the months of the year. We have enjoyed singing songs to help us to remember them. Please continue to practise at home.

 

In English we have been adding the suffixes ed and ing to words and writing sentences. We had fun playing bingo with the new words we had made and matching pairs.

On Monday, we were excited to see a table set up for a feast. We retold the story of the Last Supper through role play. We had bread and juice and thought about how Jesus and his disciples felt. Then we sequenced the photos of our role play and retold the story. We also did some lovely artwork to show the story of the Last Supper.

 

On Wednesday, Mr Friedlander from Dame Alice Owen did some scientific investigations with us. First we investigated how boats float. We started with a ball of plasticine and tested whether or not it floated. Then we reshaped the plasticine into the shape of a boat. Then we tested our new boats and they floated! We also mixed water with sugar and food colouring to make a rainbow in a bottle. The children observed very closely and describe what happened using scientific vocabulary.

Week 10

This week we have been  learning about the story of the Entry in to Jerusalem. We acted out the story and enjoyed watching  ourselves on the video clip. We looked at the different Gospel writers and recognised that Luke’s story did not include palms.  We read Luke’s story and we retold the story in our own words.

In Numeracy we have been comparing the length and weight of different objects. We have been using different resources to measure and compare.

In English we have been identifying nouns, verbs and adjectives in sentences. Please look for these words in your reading books.

The children love voting for the book they want to read at the end of each day!

Week 9

We have had a wonderful week of learning! To begin Science week, we made rockets and learnt about the scientist Mae Jemison. She was the first African-American woman to go into space. We have been learning about lots of different journeys and how we travel. On Celebration morning, we made paper aeroplanes and helicopters with our parents. We loved the skittle investigation, watching all the colours travel across the plate.

In Religion we have been looking at the journey though Lent. We made beautiful hearts to remember Jesus. We have been learning about the stations of the cross and what each station means. On Wednesday, we learnt about how we can show our love to each other. We sang songs and prayed with Michael.

In Maths we have been learning about 3D shapes and sorting them into different groups. We have been looking at real life objects and identifying what shape they are.

We have continued with the story The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon. The children planned and wrote their own stories of the dish and the spoon’s adventures in their homes or our school. They got up to lots of mischief!

In PE we watched the Honda advert of different parts of the car moving. We performed a dance of different movements in a sequence.

Week 8

What a wonderful week we have had!  In Maths we have identifying and describing 2D shapes. We sorted shapes into groups according to their properties.

We have continued reading The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon. The children have written wonderful wanted posters and a diary recount.

On Thursday it was World Book Day. All of the children looked fantastic in their costumes and they enjoyed describing their characters. We talked about how important it is to read regularly. We played pass the book. Can you think of the most unusual places to read? Take a photo reading in an usual place and send it in.

After reading the story The Scarecrows Wedding, we made scarecrows.  We used wooden spoons, different materials and straw. The scarecrows look great!

Our class garden is looking wonderful. What amazing gardeners we have in the class! The children planted the beautiful plants that you sent in. Thank you!

Week 7

I hope you had a lovely half term. The children settled back into learning well. In Maths we have been learning doubles and halves and the relationship between them. We have been using a variety of resources to calculate and to show our answers. We had lots of fun playing ‘Doubles Bingo’

The whole school are reading and writing about the book The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon. Year 1 have been thinking about the qualities of a good friend and describing how the dish and spoon showed they were good friends.

In RE we have been learning about Fairtrade. We looked at how chocolate was made and how Fairtrade helps the cocoa farmers. The children made posters to persuade people to buy Fairtrade chocolate.

The children have been busy weeding the gardens, getting it reading to plant our beautiful flowers. Thank you for the lovely plants you have sent in.

Next Thursday is World Book Day. The children can dress as a book character and bring in their favourite book to share with the class.

Homework – A book review on the children’s favourite book.

Week 6

What a busy half term we have had! This week is other faith week. Year 1 have been learning about Judaism. On Tuesday we had a fun, informative workshop where the children got to handle and wear some artefacts.

     

On Wednesday we had an internet safety workshop where the children learnt how important staying safe online is. They were part of a computer game and they had to block people who were unkind and tell an adult.

In Science we have been predicting what objects sink and what objects float. Then the children tested their predictions and recorded their results.

On Thursday the children had a wonderful time dancing at the disco!

Next term we will be making a class garden. Our garden will be about The Scarecrow’s Wedding . If you have any old clothes or materials , please send them in. Also if you would like to donate some plants, we would be very grateful.

Week 5

In Maths the children have been making two digit numbers with Dienes. They have been drawing pictures to show how many tens and how many ones.

In English we have continued learning about the features of instructions and the children wrote instructions to explain how they brush their teeth. We have also been learning about adding the suffixes to word.

In Science, we had an important job to help Cinderella find the best paper to clean with. We tested paper, hand towels and kitchen roll. We found kitchen roll was the best.

In Religion, we have been learning about the Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation.

In ICT we have been learning about algorithms. We drew an algorithm and then followed the steps to draw a picture on the ipad.

Week 4

Another fun week! In Literacy we have been learning about instructions. We followed instructions to make a jam sandwich and gave our partners instructions. Then we wrote the instructions to help others to make a jam sandwich. The children loved making and eating the sandwiches!

In Numeracy we have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones using different resources.

In Science we did an investigation to see what happened to different foods when we heated them. We made great predictions and described the changes using wonderful vocabulary.

In Geography, we have been learning about the Arctic. We located it on a map. We researched information on the iPads and we looked at the types of animals that would be there. We also thought about the clothes we would need to take in our suitcase.

Mr Cicco is leaving us today. The children have thoroughly enjoyed having him in the class and have learnt a lot from him. We wish him luck in his training.

On Friday we had a great day playing in the snow!

Week 3

A busy week of learning! In Science, we have continued our learning on materials. The children made posters to show objects and their properties.

On Thursday, we had a special visitor, Bishop John Sherrington. He spoke to us about his role as a bishop and we asked him lots of interesting questions. He enjoyed listening to us sing.

On Friday we led the school assembly about St Paul and his message of God’s spirit being in all of our joy. The children were fantastic! They all read and sang beautifully. We hope you all loved your beautiful smile your children gave to you.

Week 2

We have had a great week of learning! In Literacy we have been reading the story ‘The Last Noo-Noo’ By Jill Murphy. The children did some hot seating on the different characters in the story and they answered some great questions from the other children.

In Numeracy we have been making equivalent number sentences.

5 + 1 = 3 + 3. They have been using a variety of resources to check that both sides are equal.

In Science, we started our new topic Materials. The children used their senses to describe how materials felt and then sorted objects into different groups.

This term we are learning about how God is with us everyday. We have been thinking of times when we feel God’s presence in all the wonderful things we do. We have been focusing on when we feel or see joy around us.
