Another busy week full of Nativity prep and finished off with a lovely Music Concert by KS1.
Year 1 spent their Friday wellbeing time decorating the classroom with festive crafts so we can enjoy them with our busy week next week…

Home learning:
Mathletics- there is no game linked to this week’s focus so please use the additional activity sheet and the video below to support your child.
The children found it challenging to ‘find the difference’ between two numbers this week as it was presented differently from their usual language of subtraction. Please encourage the use of the language of ‘difference’ in everyday situations to reinforce this new learning. E.g. what is the difference between my portion and yours? Spelling Shed sounds taught this week: ie (terrible tie) ow (blow the snow) ue (come to the rescue)
I have not set activities as when I went on under a child’s login I wasn’t able to have the full access because of the assignments set. If your child logs on like usual, then they should be able to select the sounds taught this week from the stepping stones and then have full access to all games based on the sounds. Please let me know if this is a more efficient way of accessing the sounds and games.

On Friday we joined the whole school in marking the start of The Season of Advent. We placed our Advent Promises on the board for all to see. We are looking forward to changing our prayer table and R.E. board on Monday to mark the transition towards Christmas.
In English we received a letter from Farmer duck to tell us that he was fed up and has left the farm for a holiday! He had left us instructions on how to take care of the farm but he muddled the order up! We worked really hard to reorder then and add in time connectives to sequence the instructions. We wrote them up in our best handwriting with our best spellings and we have taken a copy home to show you! If a letter wasn’t enough, on Thursday we received a postcard from Farmer Duck! He explained his reasons for leaving and asked us if we had any ideas how he could be happier on the farm. We had loads of ideas and included them in our postcards back to him. We hope he comes back soon as we will be writing the story of Farmer Duck next week and really need his help! Come back soon Farmer Duck!!
We have really enjoyed the last week of addition and subtraction problems in maths. We enjoyed using our water bottles to knock down and add together and we put masking tape on the carpet squares to add together. We worked really hard as a class to solve addition problems by adding the two bottom numbers to write the answer above. We liked it so much we asked for some for additional home learning!
We got very excited when our new bookcase arrived this week! We worked hard together to categorise our books. We especially liked the drawer units underneath and found them perfect to fit some comics in. If your child has enjoyed and finished reading a comic, please may you donate it to our comic drawer? It doesn’t matter if the activities have been filled in, we still enjoy reading them! We really liked our superhero drawer…
We learnt about Miss Lambie’s favourite sound this week, ‘ea’ cup of tea! We applied it well in our writing and have Spelling Shed activities to complete.

Friday was Odd Sock Day! We wore odd socks to celebrate the end of Anti-Bullying Week and to remind us that we are all different and important. The children worked hard this week to complete our Kindness Bingo Challenge. Year 1 paired up with Year 4 for Friendship Friday. They shared the playground at lunchtime together, a session of Karate in the afternoon, followed by shared golden time to finish off their day.
Year 1 have learnt ‘ay’ May I play? And ‘oy’ Toy for a boy in their first Phase 5 sounds this week. They worked very well to apply their new sounds in their spellings this week.

Year 1 joined the school today on a Pilgrimage of Remembrance around the classrooms; they were thoughtful and respectful throughout. Thank you to those families who have sent in a picture of a past loved ones as we are including them in our prayers.
Year 1 have learnt about Remembrance this week and the importance of Memorials and poppies as lasting symbols.
In Maths Year 1 have continued to solve number problems with missing wholes and parts. Mathletics has been set to consolidate this learning.
In phonics Year 1 have been applying their Phase 4 knowledge in various different activities. Assessments have been carried out and they are excited to begin Phase 5 sounds next week.
Year 1 have continued to learn about Farmer Duck in English and learnt to add adjectives to their writing to increase the description and enjoyment for the reader. They shared lovely adjectives to describe the exhausted and fed up duck. Home learning has been set to support the understanding of adjectives.

I hope you all enjoyed the half term holidays and it was lovely to see the children come back to school ready to learn.
The children were very excited to start their new unit in English and are learning about ‘Farmer Duck’. They worked well together to predict the story, discuss the characters and used their phonic knowledge to write the animal names and noises; it was a loud lesson! Then they had a lovely idea to change the provision to reflect our topic; look at their farm!
The children are enjoyed P.E. today and worked well in groups to listen, respond and retrieve. They played the ‘Mr Men’ game to warm up so ask them if they remember any of the actions for an at home workout!
In maths this week Year 1 worked hard on subtraction and used all the different language associated with it; minus, subtract, take away, less than and fewest. They represented their calculations in number sentences, tens frame, bead string, number bond diagrams and even challenged themselves to solve some word problems.
Well done Year 1 on a fantastic first week of learning!

Home learning – last home learning as none will be set for half term so this one can go over the two weeks.
• Phonics/ Spelling- Phase 4 – we have finished! The children will be assessed next week before we begin Phase 5 the week after. Please use Spelling shed to consolidate any sounds your child may still be unsure on and remember these are listed on your Parent Consultation sheet.
• I have included some handwriting paper for you to work on securing formation as many of us mentioned this at Parent Consultations.
• Tricky words we focused on this week: were, little, there, one, they (phase 4)
• Mathletics has been set but you also have free access to all games and challenges within it.
Year 1 had an exciting week of learning which started with our toys to school day. The children played party games and had treats. On Tuesday they used their toys in their last History lesson and produced beautiful descriptive writing pieces which were displayed proudly in our classroom.
During One World Week Year 1 learnt about why people go on pilgrimages to Assisi, Italy. They used Google maps and earth to locate the town and then found it on a map. They decided it all looks like a boot shape and learnt it is in the Continent of Europe. Year 1 learnt: Assisi was the birth places of St.Francis, built and drew some of the churches, played pizza parlour role play, decorated Italian flags and even learnt some Italian language phrases.
Thank you to our Italian families for providing us with resources and even some Italian breakfast biscuits! The children enjoyed them and so did the staff!
Thank you to all those who were able to attend parent consultations and open morning. The targets are in the children’s bags. No home learning is set over the holidays.

The children are enjoying their P.E. topic and are working hard in their teams to complete their challenges.
The children had a fantastic time on their trip yesterday and their behaviour was excellent. Next week the children will be writing a recount based on their experience and using their newfound animal knowledge after half term with their ‘Animal’ science topic. Thank you to all the staff and parents who accompanied KS1 on their trip as it would not be possible without you all!
Please continue to read with your child daily and comment in the reading record about anything they found challenging or any sounds they were unsure about. Reading books will only be changed when the child is reading the book fluently. Your comments support us in making that decision to change books or if they need to read it again. Please remember to have reading folders in daily. Thank you for your continued support.
Children are invited to bring in a small cuddly toy and a small treat for snack on Monday 17th October to enjoy at our cuddly toy tea party to celebrate our English learning on ‘Plenty of Love to go around’. Please make sure it is not their favourite toy as they will be staying in school all week so the children can use them in their History topic ‘Toys’ too and then they will go home for half term.
