Last Week in Year 3!

The heat did not stop us this week. We made memory boxes in Design and Technology. The children supported the children in Reception Class and we made cake pops.

It has been an absolute pleasure to teach your children twice! It has been wonderful to watch them grow and flourish this year. Thank you for supporting your children throughout the year.

Thank you for the generous gifts, cards and thoughtful words.

Have a wonderful summer!

Mrs Carey

This week, the children in Year 4 wrote and published their Stitch Head inspired narratives, which turned out great. They revised calculations and key facts in Maths and thought about changes to our environment that could affect habitats in Science. On Wednesday, some children from class participated in a music concert, where they performed beautifully, showcasing their many talents. Well done, Naomi, Thomas, Julia, Fern, Lena, Elsa, Catherine, Christina, Amber, Lucy, Nikola, Christoph and Siena! On Thursday, the class took part in a Transition activity, where they had an opportunity to spend some time in their new classroom with their new class teacher.

Friday was then dedicated to Fun, with the children participating in activities such as: go-karts, bouncy castle, nerve shoot out, hook the duck, water sponge experience, glitter tattoos, face painting and the fruit and cake station. They finished the day with an ice lolly!

What a lovely way to end their last full week in school!

Next week is going to be a really hot one, so please make sure you send in water bottles and sun hats. Please also send in one strong tote bag as the children will start taking home some of their books, art, etc. Thank you.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Friday 1st July, 2022

This week we have continued to work on interpreting data in tables in Maths and spent time revisiting percentages and fractions in our fluency sessions.  We went to Our Lady and St Vincent’s Church on Wednesday to celebrate the feast of Ss Peter and Paul.  During Fr Shaun’s homily the children raised their hands on many occasions to answer his questions on Ss Peter and Paul. Well done children.

Yesterday, the class got busy doing design and technology as they have begun their CAMs project.  The children found out things about toys from 1837 – 1901 ad then about mechanical toys.  They have found out that a cam mechanism is made up of three components: a cam, slider and follower and the mechanism that causes components to move.  From our second session, the children investigated the different types of cams which create different movements  and looked at what happens if they replaced the eccentric cam, for example, for another.  They were then set the challenge of drawing the movement of any cam investigated.  They rose to the challenge and from their findings, have chosen two or three cams they would like to use to create their own mechanical toy.  Next week they will be looking at both linear and rotary movement.

In RSE we looked at The Trinity and the importance of the Home, School and Parish links and then discussed what Catholic Social Teaching is.

On Thursday afternoon, we had group of Year 2 children come and visit our classroom.  They were sharing with us their ‘Monster’ stories.  The class listened carefully to each child who read their story beautifully and showed us their monster designs.  It was lovely to see two proud older sisters listen to their sister and brother share their work.

In English this week we have begun a new unit based on Water de la Mere’s ‘The Listener’. We have been exploring the vocabulary and the way it is performed. Today we used instruments to add mood and atmosphere to the poem.

Wishing you and your families a lovely weekend.

Yesterday, Year 4 had a fantastic time at the Epping Forest District Museum, where they took part in a Tudor Workshop.  After a short introduction, the children built a physical timeline, placing key events on it from Henry VIII’s reign, including the fate of his 6 unfortunate wives. Shortly after that, they have been told about the family who lived in the house that is the current museum built in 1520. The Tailors have been a well off family with 6 children who may have seen Henry galloping by on his horse, on the way to visit the abbot, living in The Abbey at the time. The children had the opportunity to dress up as Thomas and Constance Tailor, and handled artefacts from their house.

After a short snack break, the children learnt about the Tudor alphabet and tried writing their names using quills and ink. They made Tudor bookmarks, decorating them with their own handmade tassels.

After their lunch in the library, the class went back into the museum, where they looked for clues to answer questions about the Tailors’ household items; looked at wooden panellings and the meaning of each symbol; handles pottery pieces and drew their own Tudor plate design as well as looking at and handling  Tudor toys, cutlery and other items.

They had a lovely time and took away a lot of useful information beyond being very well behaved! Well done Year 4!

I would also like to say a huge thank you to you parents for supporting your children in making their absolutely amazing Tudor house models! They look fantastic and it has been lovely to see the children’s pride in their work! They are a beautiful addition to our classroom!

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

The children in Year 4 this week spent some times outdoors identifying plant life growing on our school grounds. They used terminology to categorise their findings such as stem, leaf, petal, flower, fruit, bark, twig, etc. In Maths, the class finished their short unit of time, calculating unknown start and finish times using duration and converting between units of time. Later in the week, they moved on to identifying, comparing and ordering angles using benchmarks, such as right angles. In English, they have written their engaging final pieces in their explanation text unit, giving details about their ‘crazy inventions’. They edited their writings and published them in neat. In RE, we looked at the characters and the settings of the Good Samaritan story, using maps and historical details about people from that era. In art, the class created illustrations to go with our class story, Stitch Head, using pastel crayons and paint. We played rounders in PE. In History, the children looked at how life was different in Tudor times depending on social class and extended that learning by looking at everyday activities, fashion, food, education, etc.

A letter was sent home yesterday about next week’s class trip and the event was also set up on SchoolComms, so please make sure to give consent online and decide on lunch options as soon as possible. Thank you!

Summer 2 Week 3

In Year 2 this week, the children have created their own monsters and written descriptions of them. They have also written a letter warning a child not to take a monster to school. Next week they will be planning and writing a story about a monster coming to Pope Paul School! They will need to include descriptive language, conjunctions and interesting sentence starters to engage the reader.

In Maths, the children have been learning about symmetry . They have investigated which 2D shapes have lines of symmetry and used mirrors to help them reflect a pattern across a mirror line, creating symmetrical pictures.

In swimming, the children learnt about the meaning of different flags at beaches and swimming pools. They also learnt what do if they fall into open water and how to save someone else.

The children have also enjoyed tending to the gardens and playing lots of tennis and badminton at playtime.

Have a lovely weekend

English – Please think about what trouble a monster might cause at school and how the children might teach the monster how to behave. Bring an A4 piece of paper with ideas (not a whole story) on, that can be used to support their story writing in class. For example would they; Chase the teachers? Eat all the pizza? Teach the children to roar/fly/breath fire? Break all the chairs? Smash the jungle gym? Climb/ Fly onto the roof? Make friends? Become a Y2 pupil or teacher at Pope Paul School?

Reception Week Beginning 13.6.22

What a busy week it has been!

This week was ‘Healthy Eating Week’, and Reception joined the rest of the school thinking about the big message this year, which was:

Eat well for you and the planet!

The children learnt about the importance of having a healthy diet and lifestyle and how to keep our bodies healthy, by exercising, staying clean and regularly brushing teeth properly. The children learnt about why the body needs protein and made their own healthy protein snack.

Our story focus this week ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, linked the healthy eating focus beautifully with our new topic, ‘The Hidden World in our Garden’. Through this book, the children not only continued to learn about foods that are good for you, but they also about the lifecycle of a butterfly!

The highlight of the week was Reception’s first ever Sports Day. The children were absolutely fantastic, demonstrating their sports skills, listening skills and care and support for one another. Thank you to Josie for starting off each event so confidently!

This afternoon, the children took part in The Blessed Sacrament Procession. As usual, Reception made us all proud with their exemplary behaviour and reverence.

Happy Father’s Day to you all for Sunday; we hope you have lots of fun celebrating together in the sunshine.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Summer 2 Week 2

Year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed Sports Day and Healthy Eating Week this week.

Everyone tried their best and used their talents on sports day. It was great to welcome the parents to celebrate our sporting achievements and then share our learning environment with them afterwards.

As part of Healthy eating week, we have learnt about the importance of keeping fit and healthy though exercise and diet. Lisa, our head cook, explained to us that we need a mixture of different food types on our plate in order for us to have a balanced diet. We have also learnt the importance of drinking water, which foods keep us hydrated  and why we shouldn’t waste food.

Have a lovely weekend

This week, the children in Year 4 took part in lots of practical activities to think about healthy and active lifestyle as part of Healthy Eating Week.

On Tuesday, they participated in Sports Day with great enthusiasm displaying true team spirit and sportsmanship. Well done to all of them, especially St Bernadette’s house!

On Wednesday, the class looked at different energy sources gained from food, particularly at fibre. They considered the health benefits of fibre and looked at daily water intake, as well. Later in the day, they baked healthy muesli bars, using high fibre alternatives such as coconut oil, oat, wholemeal flour and dried fruits. They sweetened their muesli bars with honey.

On Friday, the children partook in the Blessed Sacrament Procession, walking down Baker Street with great reverence.

During the week, the children also sat their Multiplication Table Check tests. I am very proud of their achievements and the maturity with which they approached this nerve wrecking exam. All their hard work of learning their table payed off- Well done Year 4!

Friday 17th June, 2022

This week in Year 5 we have approached our Heathy Eating week with such energy!

Thank you to all the children in the class who brought into school a sample of their favourite fruits.  Once cut up, the class spent time tasting the wonderful colourful array of vegetables and fruit and alongside their prayer partners from Year One on Thursday afternoon, produced fruit kebabs to sample!

Sports Day, one of the most exciting days of the school year, took place on Tuesday afternoon.  After a successful warm up led by some of the children in Year 6, the children took part in the various sporting events ranging from running to shot put activities.  The class had fun and engaged in this physical activity experience.  Thank you to all the parents who came along to support them.
