Friday 18th November, 2022

This week has been antibullying week with Reach Out – Show Kindness being our focus.  The children spent time designing posters about the importance of team work and looked at scenarios where they talked about the importance of reaching out and looking to an adult for support if they needed it.  The class were mature with their answers and what approaches to take. Today, the children joined their reception buddies for a karate session and this afternoon, friendship afternoon, they met with their reception buddies. Each week, it is such a delight to see your child’s relationship develop with their reading partner.

In Design and Technology the children have continued with their designs doing a paper template of what they would like their mobile phone cover to look like.  In Maths we have continued with simplifying fractions.  In French we moved onto looking at distances from one french town to another.  The children have been working hard on their pronunciation of the french vocabulary introduced to them.  In English, we have been developing our understanding of mood and atmosphere and have considered how to show how our characters are feeling, without telling our reader. In Science they investigated how light travels in a straight line – the darkened classroom was a buzz of excitement during their investigation!

During the season of Advent one of the ways we can remember Jesus’ genealogy (all those who were part of Jesus’ family) is by making a Jesse Tree.  Jesse was King David’s father – a member of Jesus’ family, generations ago.  In RE the children looked again at Jesus’ Genealogy and Matthew’s Gospel and designed symbols for their Jesse trees.

The Key Stage Two Advent Service is fast approaching and the children who expressed an interest in singing a solo were given their lines today.  The songs and words are on the blog under a separate post.  Please encourage your child to learn their words.  The spoken parts will be allocated on Monday.

On Wednesday eleven children from Year 6 took part in the Primary Maths Challenge.  The children did well completing what is a difficult maths paper.  They will be awarded their certificates in next weeks assembly.  Well done to VJ, Kian, Nicholas, Finn, Vihaan, Hebe, Ben, Elle, Johanna, Max and Maria!

Wishing you and your family a lovely weekend ahead.

The children in Year 4 published their Roman myths in the neatest before moving on to their next English genre, non-chronological reports. In Maths, they moved onto formal written methods for subtraction and played Bankruptcy, a competitive strategic game to put their operations into practice.

In Science, they used the school’s official site map to plan and later test fire alarms, thinking about volume, distance and accessibility. In RE, after looking at and understanding the symbols of the Jesse Tree, the class read the 7 ‘O’ Antiphons and researched their origins and importance. In History, they used artefacts to infer details about everyday life in Roman Britain whilst in PE, they further developed their  understanding of ways of travelling and simple balances and created routines in small groups using apparatus.

This week, the children also had a special focus on anti-bullying, celebrating differences, learning about the power of a smile and about how to give and receive kindness. The class also looked at scenario cards and came up with strategies to deal with them safely and effectively. They completed a ‘kindness bingo’ activity and made ‘kindness fortune tellers’ to write kind comments to a classmate.

For our next D&T project, please may I ask that if you have any empty cereal boxes, you send them in please. We are making mechanisms, with levers and we need thinner types of cardboard pieces for our prototypes. Sadly, thicker cardboard does not work, so please do not send in packaging materials (boxes, etc) unless they are the thinner paper pouches (Amazon uses them often). Thank you very much, in advance.

I hope you’ll have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Friday was Odd Sock Day! We wore odd socks to celebrate the end of Anti-Bullying Week and to remind us that we are all different and important. The children worked hard this week to complete our Kindness Bingo Challenge. Year 1 paired up with Year 4 for Friendship Friday. They shared the playground at lunchtime together, a session of Karate in the afternoon, followed by shared golden time to finish off their day.

Year 1 have learnt ‘ay’ May I play? And ‘oy’ Toy for a boy in their first Phase 5 sounds this week. They worked very well to apply their new sounds in their spellings this week.

Enjoy the weekend,

Miss Lambie

  • Please may children have their reading books in their bags every day.
  • Please can you spare any boxes of tissues, we are very sneezy at the moment!
  • Mathletics and Spelling Shed have been set. I have sent home a Phase 5 phonic mat for support.

Friday, 11 th November 2022

This week, the children in Year 4 first planned, then wrote their big Roman themed narrative across 7 paragraphs using writing tools such as similes, metaphors, expanded noun phrases and subordinating conjunctions.

In Maths, the children applied their understanding of column addition with regrouping when playing a competitive game using playing cards.

In Science, they looked at a problem solving enquiry using their understanding of distance and volume to plan fire alarms across the school whilst in RE, they looked at Matthew’s Gospel and the Jesse Tree to explain the significance of Jesus’ genealogy.

On Wednesday, they created their final art piece of their unit of pattern making, using all skills taught this term.

On Thursday, the class also performed in their first Assembly on Remembrance. Well done for the lovely reading and singing.

Friday completed the week with a 2 minutes silence at 11 o’clock followed by a procession across the school to celebrate Remembrance Day.

I hope you have a lovely weekend,

Friday 4th November, 2022

This week the children have continued with their art work with some impressive results.  In RE the children have reviewed their understanding of Advent and spent time this week looking at the Saints  linking the examples of their lives to Jesus’ teaching in the Beatitudes. The class went to mass on the Feast of All Saints and Vihaan, Caroline, VJ,  Monica and Johanna read beautifully.  We started our new French topic on Neighbours and the children were introduced to using the correct form of ‘de’.  We have also started our Design and Technology topic on Textiles and the outcome will be creating a mobile phone holder.

NEXT Wednesday (9th November) is our class mass and the theme is Remembrance.  Please join us if you are able to.  Mass will start at 9:30am.

.

Wishing you a fabulous weekend.

Log into your TTRs and ensure you are testing your speed and recall of your tables.  Well done to those children who have improved on their personal best time scores…keep this up!!

Log onto SPAG.com and complete the Key Stage 2 SPAG assessment (this may take up to an hour as there are 50 questions).  Please do not worry if your child does not know the answer to some of the questions as there will be content that we have not yet covered in Year 6.

Spellings: prejudice, existence, muscle, suggest, identity, accommodate, determined, rhyme, available, competition.

Design and Technology:  As a starting activity for our Textile Unit, the children need to  record the measurements of a mobile phone as these will be the measurements they use for their holder. (Average phones: 5.8 to 6.2 inches (14.7 to 15.7cm)).   Alongside this, please do some research on natural and synthetic fibres.  Measurements and research should be brought into school on Tuesday.

Autumn 2

In November, we remember people who have died. The children wrote prayers for people who have died. On Tuesday, the children celebrated Mass for All Saint’s Day. The children sang and responded beautifully.

In Maths, we have been revisiting ‘Think 10’ to help when adding 1, 2 and 3 digit numbers.  They practised these concepts practically and in written form. Over the next few weeks, the children will be learning many strategies to add and subtract numbers.

In English, our new unit is recounts. They children have been reading, summarising and analysing newspaper reports. The children have learnt the features of newspaper reports and have been identifying the different features in different reports they have read.

In Science, the children began a new topic about forces and they planned an investigation to test how objects move on different surfaces. They thought about how they could make their investigation a fair test. In History, we started our new topic on Stone Age. We looked at the different periods in the Stone Age.

In PE, we learnt how to play Tag Rugby. The children worked well in teams to score a try, remembering the rules of the game.

Year 4 has had yet another busy week, following the holidays.

On Tuesday, the class walked down to the Church to participate in the All Saints Mass. They sang beautifully and answered Father Shaun’s questions with enthusiasm. The children also started their new Science unit, Sound, making links with onomatopoeia.

On Wednesday,  they created poppies to accompany our Remembrance Assembly next week. They used different mediums, such as pencil, poster paint, crayon and felt tip.

In the afternoon, they revised key concepts in gymnastics, learnt last year, such as travelling, level, points and balance.

On Thursday, they used an interactive Liturgical Calendar in RE to place the period of Advent in time, making links with personal events such as birthdays or family anniversaries.

Whilst in Art, they carried on their unit of pattern making and thought about repeating patterns and creating effect by applying shapes and colours.

We also spent time practicing for our Class Assembly, which is open for parents to watch, next week Thursday, 10th November, at 9.15am.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Friday 21st October, 2022

This week has been another busy one!  It was lovely to catch up with many of our parents at the Parent Consultations.  For those parents who could not make it, we will be in touch after half term to organise an appointment with you.

One World Week

This week, One World Week, has been a great week for dancing, drumming and cooking!  As a class we have found out about a special shrine in Ngome, South Africa.  Our Lady appeared ten times to a nun there called Sr Reinolda over a period of 12 years and called herself ‘Tabernacle of the Most High’.  The children came into school having done their research and embraced all the activities we focussed on learning about Sr Reinolda and the Ngome community.

Today, after the whole school assembly and celebration morning, the children sampled some lovely african food made by Leon’s dad and also tucked into the South African Bunny-chow (curry) we made as a class.  Myself and Mrs Lines were so delighted to see the children try out these foods even when they were unsure about what they were going to taste like!!  As you can see from the pictures, it was delight all around!

Well done to the House Captains who assisted with the harvest assembly today and well done to our Laudato Si group who also spoke about their focus after half term on free cycle.  Read more about it in this weeks newsletter.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful half-term.

Mrs McNamara and Mrs Lines

Reception Week Beginning 17.10.22

This week, Reception have been taking part in One World Week, along with the rest of the school. The focus country for the class was Ireland.

The children learnt that a pilgrimage is a special journey made to a holy place. They learnt about the Apparation of Mary in 1879 in Knock, County Mayo and how the place is now a shrine to the Virgin Mary.

Over the week, the class had fun taking part in lots of activities inspired by Irish history and culture. They were amazed by Elle, Eimear and Kate in Year 6, who shared their talents by giving the class a special Irish dancing performance. The children made Irish soda bread, flags and painted portraits of Our Lady of Knock. They also acted out the story of The Apparation, as a whole class, and thought about their own special journeys that they have been on with their families.

On Monday, the class were visited by Joshua’s mum who is a dentist. She taught the children about the importance of oral health and showed them how to brush their teeth properly. They then had a chance to practise their brushing techniques on models of teeth! Thank you Joshua’s mum!

On Tuesday, Reception were then visited by Summerain’s nanny, who cares for ladies in her role as a midwife. She told the class all about how she helps mummies and babies keep healthy and safe during and after pregnancy. The children then had the opportunity to explore the equipment that midwives use during check up appointments. Thank you Summerain’s nanny!

It was so lovely to see you all at the parent consultations and again at today’s Harvest Festival. Thank you for your support!

Wishing you all a well deserved half term break.

We hope you have lots of fun!

The Reception Team

Friday, 21st October 2022

It has been another busy week in Year 4. On Monday, the children carried on learning new stances and kicks in Karate, whilst also launching One World Week, where our focus country was the Philippines. The children looked at atlases, satellite images, globes and maps to locate the island country before learning about its major cities, languages, its population and religion.

On Tuesday, we answered our key question, ‘Why do people go to pilgrimage to the Philippines’? We watched video clips about a beautiful church near Manila, The National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help also known as the Baclaran Church. We researched the special icon of Mary with baby Jesus on her arm that is displayed in the temple and listened to devotees explaining its healing powers. We have later written our own prayers to the Divine Mother.

On Wednesday, we baked Philippine butter biscuits in the morning whilst also looking at local, handcrafted Filipino household objects, ornaments and jewellery, inferring what they tell us about the people and culture of the Philippines.  The children later tried their hands in paper weaving, recreating the national flag.

On Thursday, we went to our first class trip to the Epping Forest District Museum, where we participated in a Roman workshop, using artefacts found in a Roman villa and bathhouse in nearby Abridge. We acted as slaves to ‘Lady Julia’ preparing for a grand party, identifying Roman objects used in everyday life at around 80AD. The children dressed up and offered their objects to her explaining their use and relevance. We also toured the galleries of the museum, tracing Roman coins, playing Roman board games made out of sheep knuckles, digging for treasures on a tiny excavation site and moulding clay to create our own tiles.

Thank you for those of you who came to see me this week; it has been great to celebrate your children’s achievements. I hope you enjoyed visiting our classroom, as well.

I wish you a lovely and restful half term,

Ms Varga
