Summer 1 Week 1

I hope you had a lovely Easter!
On Sunday, we heard the sad news about Pope Francis. The children have painted pictures of Pope Francis and written thank you prayers for him. They thought about how they can show kindness like Pope Francis did. The children made Popemobiles.
Wednesday was St George’s Day. We read the story George and the Dragon. The children made shields, dragon wings and princess hats. They wrote sentences about the story and wrote about times when they were brave.

In Maths, we have been learning about the numbers 11, 12 and 13. The children have been making these numbers by making 10 and one, two or three more.
In phonics, we have been revising the phase 3 sounds and writing sentences. Please continue to practise these sounds at home.
Each Wednesday, the children will do PE with the Sports coach. They enjoyed playing games this week.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 5 – 25/04/25

Happy Easter and welcome back to the summer term!
I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and enjoyed some quality time with your families.

This week, alongside celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus, we have spent time reflecting on the life and legacy of Pope Francis. We explored his focus on human dignity as a key principle of Catholic Social Teaching – recognising that every person is made in God’s image and has inherent worth.

The children were inspired by quotes from his book Let Us Dream, which sparked thoughtful reflections and some beautiful artwork. You’ll be able to see some of this in a special memorial display at church this weekend.

Today, the children wrote heartfelt letters to Pope Francis in heaven, expressing their thanks for his life and considering how we can continue his mission as Pilgrims of Hope, building a better world. Their letters will form our RE display this half term – I was truly proud of the care and thought that went into each one.

In PE, we’ve begun a new unit on cricket. On Wednesday, Mr Moretti introduced us to close and deep catching techniques, which we revisited again on Friday.
Please note that our PE days this term are Wednesday and Friday.

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and a good rest over the holiday. It has been lovely to hear the many amazing things the children did in the past 2 weeks.

Following Pope Francis’ death on Monday, the children reflected on his life and legacy upon their return to school on Tuesday. They watched news reports about his work with refugees and made links between his work and our fifth Catholic Social Teaching principle, Dignity. The children also looked at ways the Pope showed welcome to people from around the world including prisoners and wrote about other important issues they could support when they are older.

With the beginning of a new term, we started new units in English and Maths. We watched our new class story Zahra and identified setting, characters and plot before retelling the story using visual aids, whilst in Maths, we used analogue and digital scales to measure in grams.

In Science, we also started a new unit by looking at Living things and their habitat. We had opportunities to practice our oracy skills when reasoning about ‘things’ being alive or not. Later, the children also discussed what it means for ‘things’ to be once alive.

In PE, the class carried on their work with Mr Moretti, this time learning new play ground games.

Thanks to Amelia and her family’s wonderful care, we could release the beautiful butterflies we grew in class. The children reflected on the various stages of the metamorphosis before releasing the insects in the Peace Garden.

Few important notes for the coming weeks:

PE days will continue to be Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Swimming shall start on Wednesday, 7th May 2025

School will be closed next Thursday, 1st May 2025 for INSET day.

Year 1 Week Beginning 21.4.25

Welcome back!

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter and a good rest over the holiday. We were so blessed with the beautiful weather; the children have been telling us lots of exciting stories about what they did over the two week break!

The class have gradually settled back into the Year 1 routines and are ready for their final term in Year 1! Following Pope Francis’ death on Monday, the children reflected on his life and legacy upon their return to school on Tuesday. They were able to independently make links between what Pope Francis continually strived for: inclusivity for all, commitment to social justice, humility and his care and love for God’s creation, and the new whole school Catholic Social Teaching focus- Dignity. In RE, The class thought about how they too could follow in Pope Francis’ footsteps and ensure dignity and care for others, in their everyday lives.

Also on Tuesday, the children learnt that over the holidays, the class caterpillars had turned into butterflies. Thank you to Savannah and her family for looking after them so well and ensuring they survived! Year 1 took the butterflies to the Peace Garden, where there are lots of flowers, and released them! It was very exciting! At first the butterflies didn’t seem to keen to leave, but after a while, with lots of encouragement from the children, all five butterflies flew away to start their new lives! The class are looking forward to getting some more caterpillar eggs, so they will be able to watch every stage! Hopefully this time, they won’t leave it until the holidays to change!!!

In English, the class began their new unit based on the short Literacy Shed film ‘Whistleless’- which is about a bird that cannot sing.

In Maths, Year 1 have been learning about measuring length and height and have been comparing and measuring things around the classroom using  different objects.

In Geography, Year 1 began their new learning about the seaside, and in Science, they learnt about amphibians and the life cycle of a frog, as part of their focus on animals.

The weather is set to get warmer next week; please remember to provide a sunhat and water bottle, and apply sun cream before school, so that we can keep them all safe from the sun. Thank you!

Please encourage your child to complete the revision phonics mat sent home today and to continue read their reading book daily to an adult. Thank you.

Please note, from next week, PE days will be on Wednesday and Friday.

Have a lovely weekend,

Friday 25th April 2025

It was wonderful to welcome Year 6 back and hear all about their Easter breaks.

With only a few short weeks until SATs, our focus has been on revision and being as prepared as we can be. As part of this, we were visited by Beth Cullen, our school mental health practitioner, who reminded us about ways to feel calm and reduce stress. In particular, we considered the power of positive self-talk and being kind to ourselves.

In PE, Year 6 were taught by Mr Moretti, our specialist sports coach. He introduced some games and promoted focus and teamwork. Mr Moretti will continue to work with us on Tuesdays for the rest of the term. This means a change in our PE days: Year 6 will need to wear their kits on Tuesdays and Thursdays from now on.

With the sad news of Pope Francis’ passing, Year 6 have thought about his life and impact and considered how we can follow his example. They created posters on this, some of which will be displayed in the narthex of OLSV.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

Mrs Lines and Mrs McNamara

Please note that maths enrichment before and after school will continue for the next few weeks. The last session will be on the morning of 15th May. There will be no afternoon session that day.

Summer 1 Week 1

Welcome back! I hope you all had wonderful Easter breaks.

As a school, we have taken the time to reflect on the life and legacy of Pope Francis. In class, we identified how he dedicated his life to serving others and gave dignity to those in need. This thought-provoking discussion has encouraged our students to think about compassion and service in their own lives. Look out for some of our creative learning on display in Church this weekend.

In Maths, we’ve been diving into decimals, focusing on finding tenths on the place value chart. The class have also been practising dividing 2-digit numbers by 10, enhancing their understanding of these concepts.

Year 1 Week Beginning 31.3.25

Year 1 finished the Spring Term with a very busy week.

Well done to Olivia who played the piano in the KS1 music concert on Tuesday. This was her first ever time playing in front of an audience and she was brilliant!!

Thank you to all the children and their families who supported the soft toy swap on Wednesday. Thanks to your generosity, every child in Year 1 took home a new toy to love!

The week ended with a very exciting egg hunt and bunny hop around the school field. Thank you to the FOPPs, Mrs Lennox and Mrs Pandeli for organising this fun event.

Wishing you all a joyful Easter,

Ms Pemberton and the Year 1 team

Friday, 4th April 2025

The children in Year 2 had a busy last few days.

They enjoyed their Easter charity events such as the Toy Swap on Wednesday and their Bunny Hop on Friday. They participated in their Easter Egg Hunt with enthusiasm and enjoyed their Easter activity packs in class. We thank the FOPPS for organising this for us!

On Thursday, the children used dry pasta to create Stained Glass effect Easter cards. We hope you enjoyed reading them.

On Monday, the children also conducted practical investigations to describe materials and their properties, recording their findings in their own tables.

A huge well done to all the children who performed during Tuesday’s KS1 Music Concert. Some of them only just picked up their new instruments! We are proud of you all.

The class worked very hard in the Spring term and I am really pleased with their achievements. They deserve a nice break. So I hope you can all enjoy a bit of sunshine and rest and I shall see you all back for our final term of the year!
