Friday 28th March 2025

Year 6 have been busy this week preparing for the Stations of the Cross service; we have no doubt they will be amazing on Wednesday evening. The children have been told what they should be wearing for the night. For most of them, they should wear all black (no trainers) and this outfit should be in school on Monday for our dress rehearsal. Home Learning for this week, as last week is for the children to learn all the songs.

In English, the children have been building up their knowledge of how to provide a point backed up with evidence and developing their grammar skills. In maths, we have continued to consolidate concepts in shape, volume, perimeter and area.

On Tuesday Year 6 led the liturgy alongside Year 5 at the Parish Mass for the Feast of the Annunciation. Thank you to Loui, Sophie, Francine, Chloe A and Jon-jo who read and Nathan and Raylan who served.

Wednesday was World Maths Day! Ms Varga led an interesting and interactive assembly for the children and following that, the children took part in timed, team engaging maths games and challenges  to celebrate and improve their skills.

Take a look at the photos to see what they got up to:

A BIG thank you goes to: Sarah, Isabelle, Maddie, Tiya, Sophie, Teddy, Rian and Zach who led the maths dice games at lunchtime in the Main Hall.  Many children from both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two took part and enjoyed competing against their peers!

.

Next week, we will have our class photograph on Thursday. All children should be in winter school uniform for this.

On Tuesday and Wednesday– the children have been asked to bring in a clean soft toy that they do not need any more and later on Wednesday, swap it for a new one. This is part of our Whole School Lenten charity fundraising  organised by members of the School Parliament.

On Friday- it is the Easter Egg hunt (in school time).  Please log onto school comms to contribute towards this event.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Wishing all our mothers, grandmothers and god mothers a wonderful Mothers Day On Sunday!

Year 3 Week 5 Friday 28th March

RE.

PE.
Please note, this week was the last swimming lesson. There will be no swimming next week.

The children are enjoying our Handball skills and are beginning to use them in small matches.

Art
Over the last few weeks, the children have been developing their mixed media approaches to sea and landscapes, building upon use of mark making and colour. They started with mark making in their sketchbooks, inspired by various artists. They then went on to make their own sea/landscape and this week they developed their skills even further by adding stitch to their compositions.

Maths Day
On Wednesday, the school took part in a Maths Day challenge. Year 3 worked in teams to answer 5 challenges. They included Maths puzzles, number robots and visual estimation.

French
This week in French, we learnt about furniture and items we find in our classroom. Miss Lambie and Mrs Ellis were so impressed with how many the children remembered!

Reminders:

  • Our KS2 children have been busy practising for the Stations of The Cross Service which takes place on Wednesday 2nd April. All children should be in the church hall by 6.15pm. There is an expectation that all KS2 children attend this service as it is a crucial part of their RE learning this term. We have been practising our songs, acting and reading so please encourage your child to learn their words ready for next week.
  • As you are aware, we are planning to have our Easter Egg hunt in school on Friday 4th April. Please give permission and make payment via schoolcomms so that this event can go ahead. It is an important part of our fund-raising efforts!

We wish you a peaceful weekend and look forward to next week,
Mrs Poyiadzis and Miss Lambie

Year 1 Week Beginning 24.3.25

Due to the lovely weather, Year 1 have spent lots of time learning outdoors this week!

In Science, the children learnt about birds, as part of their topic about animals. Part of their lesson was  to take part in a bird watch. The class decided that the best spot would be close to the Peace Garden, as there were bird feeders and bird boxes in there. After not much action, the class came to a joint agreement to leave the garden and sit facing out towards the field, and this did not disappoint! From their new seating position, Year 1 spotted pigeons, red kites, sparrows, magpies, parakeets, black birds, crows and blue tits! They each kept a tally and drew conclusions about the most and least frequently seen bird, when they returned back to class.

On Wednesday, Year 1 celebrated World Maths Day with some fun challenges and activities. Along with Year 2, the class competed in small groups to fill a matchbox with as many items as possible. The winner was the group who managed to squeeze the most items in! This was lots of fun and required lots of team work! The class also learnt about Tangrams. (A Tangram puzzle focuses on the objective to rearrange the seven separate pieces into a complete image of various shapes) The children then had a go at making their own pictures using shapes and chalk on the KS2 playground floor.

Today in RE, Year 1 heard the Good Friday story and also learnt that on Good Friday, Catholics all over the world remember the story of Jesus’ passion in many different ways. In some places like Antigua and El Salvador on Good Friday, many people decorate the streets of the city with ‘Alfombras’ which are carpets made from coloured sawdust, sand or salt in patterns or pictures. The pictures are often of Jesus and tell the story of His life, death and resurrection. People spend many hours creating these beautiful images .

Inspired by this, Year 1 made their own Alfombras using chalk on the KS1 playground.

The children have brought home another phonics practice home learning sheet to complete as well as a phonics mat. Once again, please keep these at home to refer to.

Spelling Shed has been set; the focus this week is ‘Words where the digraph ‘er’ is stressed’.

Wishing you all a wonderful Mother’s Day and a lovely weekend,

Ms Pemberton and the Year 1 team

Year 5 – 28/03/25

This week, we have been rehearsing hard for next Wednesday’s Way of the Cross service. The children are reading their lines beautifully, and their singing grows more confident with each rehearsal. Please continue practising both your lines and the lyrics before next Wednesday.

Wednesday was World Maths Day! Ms Varga led a fantastic assembly and organised a range of exciting activities and investigations for the children to enjoy.

In English, the children planned their journalistic reports, which they will write and edit next week to conclude our unit on The Boy at the Back of the Class.

A big thank you to Brody, Leo B, and Siofra for leading us in Collective Worship this week.

We hope you love your Mother’s Day cards and flowers and have a wonderful day on Sunday!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Spring 2 Week 5

What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 4!

On Wednesday, we celebrated World Maths Day by diving deeper into the world of fractions, finding fractions of amounts and tackling some really challenging maths problems. The enthusiasm was contagious!

In English, we’ve spent time planning exciting narratives, that we will finish next week. We also used drama in RE, to freeze frame and discuss key moments in the trial of Jesus.

We learnt new playground games during PE and have worked hard to create thoughtful Mothers Day Gifts, which I’m sure you’ll love. It’s incredible to see the creativity blossoming in our class.

Have a lovely weekend

EnglishStory writing.

This week we read the Enormous Turnip. They enjoyed acting the story out. The children’s writing has been fantastic this week, they wrote about what they would use to pull the turnip out, they made books to retell the story and wrote list of the characters in the story. They have been making models using junk modelling.

In Maths, we have been learning about the number 9 and 10. The children have been counting objects and practising writing numbers. They have also been comparing numbers by using the vocabulary more than and fewer than.

In Phonics, we have been revising the Phase 3 sounds and tricky words. I have sent home the sounds that your child has forgotten, so please practise them.

Outside,we have a hairdressers role play area. The children have enjoyed doing each other’s hair and writing receipts.

This term, we have been learning about farms so the children peeled and cut vegetables. This is an important skill for the children to learn and they learnt how to use tools safely. We cooked and sate carrots, turnips. parsnips and potatoes.

On Friday, the children made and decorated cakes to raise money for Mary’s Meals and Isabel Hospice. Thank you for your kind donations. If you have not donated, please donate on schoolcomms. The children have been learning about the importance of giving to others and making links to the stories they have read in The Bible about Jesus giving.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Friday, 28th March 2025

The children in Year 2 had a lovely week in class engaging in various practical Maths activities.

On Monday and Tuesday, the class moved on to measurements and spent time outdoors to experience measuring using a meter stick. Inside the classroom, the children used normal rulers to measure smaller objects. They revised units of measurements such as mm, cm and m whilst also making sure that they notice how starting points differ from equipment to equipment.

On Wednesday, we launched World Maths Day with an assembly following practical activities outside. First the children drew animal pictures with chalks using only 2D shapes. Then, they participated in the 1 minute challenge, where in house teams they raced against each other, depositing bean bags in hoops; all under one minute! Later in the afternoon, we joined forces with year 1 and completed the Matchbox challenge where teams had to fill their boxes with as many things as they could. The team with the largest number of objects won.

At lunch time, some of the children participated in competitive dice games in the hall led by Year 6 helpers.

On Thursday, the class carried on the theme and created Tangram pictures, before participating in the £1 challenge, where the winning team had to find the most number of different ways to make £1 using coins.

Please note, there are a few things happening next week:

Tuesday and Wednesday– the children can bring in clean soft teddies that they do not need any more and later on Wednesday, swap it for a new one. All part of a Whole School Lenten charity event organised by members of the School Parliament.

Thursday- Class photos – full winter uniform please.

Friday- Easter Egg hunt (in school time); early pickup: school finishes @1pm!

Have a lovely weekend and Happy Mother’s Day!

Year 5 – 21/03/25

Here is a summary of Year 5’s week!

  • Art – We designed our own typography, inspired by our personal interests.

  • PE – In groups, the children created their own versions of the haka, incorporating unison and canon movements in the style of the traditional New Zealand war dance.

  • RE – We explored ideas about what heaven might be like.
  • Geography – With Mrs McDonald, the children began their new topic on climate change.
  • Maths – We focused on mastering short division.
  • English – We examined bias in journalistic writing, then had a go at writing our own short newspaper reports, using sensationalist language to grab readers’ attention.

Next Tuesday, Year 5 and Year 6 will be leading the 10am Mass at church for the Feast of the Annunciation – all are welcome!

Next Wednesday is World Maths Day! Ms Varga has set a whole-school Maths Scavenger Hunt for home learning – an exciting challenge to explore maths in the world around you. Here are the instructions and ideas to guide you on your quest!
