Autumn 1 Week 7

Our One World Week country, was Israel. The children located Israel and Jerusalem in the atlases and learnt about the different pilgrimages people make to the Holy Land. They also made flags and created collages of Jerusalem.

Thank you for your generous Harvest Festival donations. Many families are in need at the moment and your food donations will be greatly received. It was also wonderful to see so many of you at parents evening this week and at the celebration morning on Friday. I’m sure you’ll agree that the children have worked very hard this half term. Thank you for your continued support.

I hope you have a restful half term,

Miss Pringle

Friday 21st October, 2022

This week has been another busy one!  It was lovely to catch up with many of our parents at the Parent Consultations.  For those parents who could not make it, we will be in touch after half term to organise an appointment with you.

One World Week

This week, One World Week, has been a great week for dancing, drumming and cooking!  As a class we have found out about a special shrine in Ngome, South Africa.  Our Lady appeared ten times to a nun there called Sr Reinolda over a period of 12 years and called herself ‘Tabernacle of the Most High’.  The children came into school having done their research and embraced all the activities we focussed on learning about Sr Reinolda and the Ngome community.

Today, after the whole school assembly and celebration morning, the children sampled some lovely african food made by Leon’s dad and also tucked into the South African Bunny-chow (curry) we made as a class.  Myself and Mrs Lines were so delighted to see the children try out these foods even when they were unsure about what they were going to taste like!!  As you can see from the pictures, it was delight all around!

Well done to the House Captains who assisted with the harvest assembly today and well done to our Laudato Si group who also spoke about their focus after half term on free cycle.  Read more about it in this weeks newsletter.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful half-term.

Reception Week Beginning 17.10.22

This week, Reception have been taking part in One World Week, along with the rest of the school. The focus country for the class was Ireland.

The children learnt that a pilgrimage is a special journey made to a holy place. They learnt about the Apparation of Mary in 1879 in Knock, County Mayo and how the place is now a shrine to the Virgin Mary.

Over the week, the class had fun taking part in lots of activities inspired by Irish history and culture. They were amazed by Elle, Eimear and Kate in Year 6, who shared their talents by giving the class a special Irish dancing performance. The children made Irish soda bread, flags and painted portraits of Our Lady of Knock. They also acted out the story of The Apparation, as a whole class, and thought about their own special journeys that they have been on with their families.

On Monday, the class were visited by Joshua’s mum who is a dentist. She taught the children about the importance of oral health and showed them how to brush their teeth properly. They then had a chance to practise their brushing techniques on models of teeth! Thank you Joshua’s mum!

On Tuesday, Reception were then visited by Summerain’s nanny, who cares for ladies in her role as a midwife. She told the class all about how she helps mummies and babies keep healthy and safe during and after pregnancy. The children then had the opportunity to explore the equipment that midwives use during check up appointments. Thank you Summerain’s nanny!

It was so lovely to see you all at the parent consultations and again at today’s Harvest Festival. Thank you for your support!

Wishing you all a well deserved half term break.

We hope you have lots of fun!

The Reception Team

Friday, 21st October 2022

It has been another busy week in Year 4. On Monday, the children carried on learning new stances and kicks in Karate, whilst also launching One World Week, where our focus country was the Philippines. The children looked at atlases, satellite images, globes and maps to locate the island country before learning about its major cities, languages, its population and religion.

On Tuesday, we answered our key question, ‘Why do people go to pilgrimage to the Philippines’? We watched video clips about a beautiful church near Manila, The National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help also known as the Baclaran Church. We researched the special icon of Mary with baby Jesus on her arm that is displayed in the temple and listened to devotees explaining its healing powers. We have later written our own prayers to the Divine Mother.

On Wednesday, we baked Philippine butter biscuits in the morning whilst also looking at local, handcrafted Filipino household objects, ornaments and jewellery, inferring what they tell us about the people and culture of the Philippines.  The children later tried their hands in paper weaving, recreating the national flag.

On Thursday, we went to our first class trip to the Epping Forest District Museum, where we participated in a Roman workshop, using artefacts found in a Roman villa and bathhouse in nearby Abridge. We acted as slaves to ‘Lady Julia’ preparing for a grand party, identifying Roman objects used in everyday life at around 80AD. The children dressed up and offered their objects to her explaining their use and relevance. We also toured the galleries of the museum, tracing Roman coins, playing Roman board games made out of sheep knuckles, digging for treasures on a tiny excavation site and moulding clay to create our own tiles.

Thank you for those of you who came to see me this week; it has been great to celebrate your children’s achievements. I hope you enjoyed visiting our classroom, as well.

I wish you a lovely and restful half term,

Ms Varga

Please keep up your reading during the holiday and update your reading record when possible. Also practice your multiplication tables using your TT Rockstars accounts.

Autumn 1 Week 7

This week was One World Week and the country we have learnt about is Mexico. The classroom looks wonderful with the Mexican flags that the children made at home. First we learnt about the pilgrimage in Mexico that millions of people visit each year. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the second largest pilgrimage in the world. The children learnt about Our Lady appearing to Juan Diego. The children located Mexico on a map and researched how we would travel to Guadalupe from England. We also looked at some Mexican art mirrors and the children made their own. The children learnt a Mexican hat dance and made and ate Mexican Sweet Bread.

In Maths, the children have been rounding 2 and 3 digit numbers to the nearest ten. The children have been drawing rounding mountains to support them with their learning.

To end our Geography topic about rainforests, the children used pastels to drew pictures of rainforests.

It was lovely to see so many of you at the Harvest assembly and Celebration morning. Thank you for your donations. Well done to the mums and dads who joined in with our Mexican Hat dance.

Year 5 – 21/10/22

Earlier this week, Y5 celebrated a class Mass on the theme of Harvest. Not only did the children read and sing beautifully, but Fr Shaun was incredibly impressed with the children’s answers before the Mass began and during the Homily. I was extremely proud of them – well done, Y5! Thank you to the parents that joined us for the celebration.

The rest of the week has been dominated by our One World Week focus on Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Through art, the children learnt about the significance of the scallop shell, which is is an iconic symbol of the Camino de Santiago.

We learnt to sing a song in Spanish about the Camino (Continuando by Jehro), then had a go at some flamenco dancing!

We also made the traditional Spanish soup – gazpacho – which was met with mixed reviews!

The week ended with our annual Harvest Assembly and subsequent Celebration Morning; thank you so much to all the parents that came along to celebrate your child’s learning with them.

It has been a really enjoyable end to a fantastic first half term. Well done, Year 5, and have a well-deserved half term!

Week 7 w.b. 17.10.22

Year 1 had an exciting week of learning which started with our toys to school day. The children played party games and had treats. On Tuesday they used their toys in their last History lesson and produced beautiful descriptive writing pieces which were displayed proudly in our classroom.

During One World Week Year 1 learnt about why people go on pilgrimages to Assisi, Italy. They used Google maps and earth to locate the town and then found it on a map. They decided it all looks like a boot shape and learnt it is in the Continent of Europe. Year 1 learnt: Assisi was the birth places of St.Francis, built and drew some of the churches, played pizza parlour role play, decorated Italian flags and even learnt some Italian language phrases.

Thank you to our Italian families for providing us with resources and even some Italian breakfast biscuits! The children enjoyed them and so did the staff!

Thank you to all those who were able to attend parent consultations and open morning. The targets are in the children’s bags. No home learning is set over the holidays.

I wish you a peaceful and restful half term and look forward to seeing you on Monday 31st October.

Buona Vacanza,

Miss Lambie

Year 5 Spanish Song

Aunque sientas dolor

Sigues continuando, subiendo, continuando

Aunque tengas temor

Sigues continuando, cruzando, continuando

Pues la vida siempre te dara

Un camino, unico a ti

Con tiempo veras

Con tiempo veras

Aunque tengas preguntas

Sigues continuando, buscando, continuando

Aunque baje la sombra

Sigues continuando, navegando, continuando

Algunas veces, tal un capitan

Navegaras en tu soledad

Hacia tu tierra

Hacia tu tierra

Aunque dañan tus sueños

Sigues continuando, sembrando, continuando,

Hasta los dias tranquilos

Sigues continuando, explorando tus deseos

Friday 14th October, 2022

This week has seen the children continue their leadership roles by being involved in many events taking place in school this week.  On Monday the Y6 children assisted in the whole school assembly based on the focus of please and thank you from the Gospel message from Sunday’s Mass.  The Laudato Si group weighed conkers and selected a winning entry this week to add to their list from last week and are now thinking of how to promote sustainability in our school community.  The Liturgy Group led the lunchtime rosary session with Lorcan’s support and also visited the church on Tuesday morning before mass to participate in the daily rosary that is said there.  The JTAs met together to research things about ‘being seen’ in November and met Collette from Hertfordshire’s Road Safety Team who brought them a badge to add to their jumpers/cardigans, special pencils and reflectors as well as a log book to record  their work over this academic year.

In RE the children spent some time this week learning about the story of Saint Bernadette. Following this, they focused on one of the two stories of creation that are in Genesis (Genesis 2:4a – 25) and created a story wheel based on what they had learnt.  In Maths, the children have continued with their place value work and have now started to work on understanding factors and multiples.  In English we improved our figurative language to describe a wartime battlefield.

We ended our week with our usual visit from our reading partners- always a highlight!

Next week is One World Week and the focus is Pilgrimage.  Each class has been given a location to focus on and ours is:  Ngome Marian Shrine (South Africa).  Home Learning will be based on doing some of their own research on this special place.

If you know of anyone who has been to the shrine, please get in contact with the school.

Wishing you and your families a lovely weekend

Mrs Lines and Mrs McNamara

Home Learning:

Research:  Find out information about Ngome Marian Shrine which is based in South Africa to find out why people go on pilgrimage to it.  Pictures of this place of pilgrimage is important too.

Mathletics – Skills Quests have been assigned based on square and cube numbers.

TTRS – Timestable Rockstars

********FOR WEDNESDAY– Please bring in a cereal box or a similar type of card for art************

w.b. 10th October

The children are enjoying their P.E. topic and are working hard in their teams to complete their challenges.

The children had a fantastic time on their trip yesterday and their behaviour was excellent. Next week the children will be writing a recount based on their experience and using their newfound animal knowledge after half term with their ‘Animal’ science topic. Thank you to all the staff and parents who accompanied KS1 on their trip as it would not be possible without you all!

Please continue to read with your child daily and comment in the reading record about anything they found challenging or any sounds they were unsure about. Reading books will only be changed when the child is reading the book fluently. Your comments support us in making that decision to change books or if they need to read it again. Please remember to have reading folders in daily. Thank you for your continued support.

Children are invited to bring in a small cuddly toy and a small treat for snack on Monday 17th October to enjoy at our cuddly toy tea party to celebrate our English learning on ‘Plenty of Love to go around’. Please make sure it is not their favourite toy as they will be staying in school all week so the children can use them in their History topic ‘Toys’ too and then they will go home for half term.

Well done on another fantastic learning week Year 1 and I will see you all on Monday,

Miss Lambie

Home learning – last home learning as none will be set for half term so this one can go over the two weeks.

  • Phase 4 snakes and ladders and maze has been sent home for consolidation of the learning this week; there is no need to hand this back to me as it is additional support for home. It can be challenging to hear the clusters in some of the words and they are being spelt and read incorrectly e.g. wet instead of went and jumt instead of jump.
  • Tricky words we focused on this week: have, like, some, come, (phase 4) was, you (revised phase 3).
  • Mathletics has been set but you also have free access to all games and challenges within it.
  • Spelling Shed Phase 3 revision has been set and you also have free access to other games and sounds. I have emailed Spelling Shed about some of the queries and challenges some of you have mentioned this week but unfortunately I can not fix them myself.
  • As always, daily reading and revising phonic sounds. Please continue to use the ‘spelling strategies’ sheets that I sent home for additional support the second week. I will work on making some templates for the games that you may wish to use.
  • See last week’s blog for additional home learning links to further support Year 1. These have been added to the Year 1 webpage too.
