The children in Year 4 had a really busy week, with lots of practical activities.

On Monday, the class participated in an anti-bullying workshop as a lead up to next week’s Anti-bullying week. During their workshop, the children learnt about bullying and understood the difference between 1 isolated, unkind incident and something that would happen intentionally, over a period of time. They also learnt about ‘power imbalance’ as a new terminology and used freeze frames and acting to work on solving different scenarios. Very mature and responsible answers from everyone!

Throughout the week, the children also participated in ‘Maths Week England’, solving Maths Mysteries such as the Bullion Heist and also competing in the Maths World Cup against other schools and classes nationwide. Well done, fantastic work on your multiplication facts!

On Wednesday, the children had the amazing opportunity to work with Sensei Michael. Throughout this half term, they will learn basic karate skills like stances, kicks and punches, in a safe, non-contact environment every week.

In RE, they have carried on their Advent learning focusing on Luke as a Gospel writer and the most important Sunday readings. In Science, they started their new unit, Sound whilst in History, they put the Roman invasion of Britain in context when looking at timelines and events happening around the world in that time.

Thank you for sending in some cardboard, we now have enough to finish our project prototypes. The children completed their first prototype this week, called the ‘waving hand’ and had great fun designing their mechanisms.

Please remember to send in one white item for our class hamper! Thank you.

Have a lovely and safe weekend,

Ms Varga

English The children are currently working on a narrative unit based on Angela McAllister’s book, Leon and the Place Between. I included a video link, if you wish to listen to the story at home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpjAtvxA3xE

This week, I would like the children to create a plan for their final writing piece in about a week’s time.

They need to think (and probably talk to an adult) about their own idea for a ‘Place Between’ using their imagination. How would it look like? How would it smell like? What would they see there? What would they hear? Could they taste anything in their magical world? Who would be  one suitable character to meet there?

This is a very personal ‘Place Between’. As I explained it in class, for some, it might be a happy place, with bright light and a rainbow. With trees that look like candy floss and unicorns jumping from one fluffy cloud to another.

For some children, it might be magical, a bit like the world of Harry Potter. They might see magical animals, and potions floating in the air. They might see sparks from spells, capes turning and twisting. Maybe brooms flying by, etc.

For other children, it might be a bit more mysterious. Shadows and whispers filling a dark, candle lit hall. Maybe ghosts of magicians from the past floating by. Forgotten tricks stuck in their universe.

The only limitation I need to set is that their plan cannot include computer game images or existing themes like Pokemon, Minions, etc. It needs to be the children’s own idea building on their interests. They are also only allowed to meet with one character.

Please can you create an A4 poster, where you draw a picture of your ‘Place Between’ and add key words or phrases to describe the sights, sounds, tastes, feelings. Also include and clearly name the character, who you are going to meet there. DO NOT WRITE A STORY PLEASE! This is just a plan, that we are going to build on and add to it. I only need key words or phrases! Please be ready to present your poster on Tuesday.

Planning ahead will give the children a very clear, solid base to build upon when we get to our final writing stage, therefore the children will be able to focus on sentence structure and vocabulary and work on their specific targets.

5th November 2021

I hope you all had an enjoyable half-term break. It was lovely to ‘meet’ many of you this week through the online parent consultations. For those of you who were unable to book an appointment please contact me through the school office email.

The highlight of this week for year 5 was undoubtedly our class Mass on Wednesday, which Father Shaun  and our seminarian Dale celebrated with us in our classroom. It was a beautiful service. Everyone in the class had worked really hard to prepare for it. Some children read, some children had a singing part. The theme of the mass was Remembrance, as it will be Remembrance Sunday very soon. Well done to the children for making it a very special occasion as Father Shaun commented about their reverence and their participation throughout.

In Maths we’ve been focussing on our fluency this week. We will be starting work on multiplication and division next week.

In Science this week we looked at how much a baby grows over its first year and what factors may influence this growth. In RE the children used their bibles to make links between scripture and the nature of God expressed in biblical metaphors.

In PE this week the children swam well, and this afternoon the children continued their topic on multi-skills focussing on hand coordination and teamwork.

Home Learning is set out below.

A gentle reminder that our hamper colour is purple. Many thanks to those who have contributed already to this.

Wishing you all a good weekend.

Thank you for attending this week’s parent consultations; it was wonderful to discuss and celebrate your children’s start to Year 6 with you.

Today we began our new RE unit – From Advent to Christmas – by thinking about the symbolism of Advent traditions, in particular the Advent wreath. They made their own wreath and wrote about the symbolism within it. Have a look at some of their beautiful wreaths:

The House Captains have been busy fundraising for the Royal British Legion by selling poppies this week. The collection box is almost full so they must have been working very hard!

Autumn 2nd Week 1

It was lovely to meet most of you for parent’s consultations this week.

In Maths we have been learning about the magnitude of number. The children have to add different numbers to an empty number line using their halving and estimating skills. Please practising halving numbers.

In English we have been listening and reading newspaper reports. After that, we thought of the main parts, what, where, when, why, who and how. Then we used this information to write a summary the report.

In PE, the children have been using the skills they learnt last half term to play netball. Each time they play they are improving their footwork skills.

In Geography, we have continued to learn about climate change and how important the Amazon Rainforest is to the whole world. We had a meeting online with a farmer who spoke to the children about how climate change is affecting his job.

In Computing, we played the game hit the button to practise times tables and division facts.

On Friday, we had a practise of the recorders where the children played hot cross buns beautifully.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Autumn 2, week 1

Welcome back! It has lovely to see the children return from the half term refreshed and ready for learning. Today the children were very excited to lead their first assembly, all about Remembrance Sunday. They produced some beautiful artwork to share with the other classes and read very well in the assembly. It was lovely to see so many of you there.

We began the week by having a reflective class worship where we prayed for people in heaven, shared our half term news and thanked God for keeping us safe.

As part of our RE learning about preparing for Advent, we were visited by Mrs Lala, who explained how she is preparing for the birth of her baby. Thank you so much for helping us with our learning.

Have a lovely weekend

Reception Week Beginning 1.11.21

Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely half term break!

This week, Reception have been learning all about the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali.

They learnt about how Hindu families prepare for this special celebration and why they celebrate it. The children then had fun making Diva lamps, Rangoli patterns, Diwali cards and trying on traditional clothing.

During the latter part of the week,  Reception learnt about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot and why we celebrate Bonfire Night. They also learnt the Firework Code and made their own firework safety posters. The children also thought about the things they would need to host a firework party- some children even used their phonic knowledge independently to write a list! They also made their own fireworks from junk modelling material.

It was lovely to see so many of you during the parent consultations this week. A summary of the conversation will be in your child’s book bag on Monday. Thank you for your continued support!

Wishing you all a nice weekend,

The Early Years Team

Friday, 5th November 2021

This week in Year 4, the children published their persuasive travel brochures which went on display in the classroom and started their next English unit, a narrative, based on Angela McAllister’s book, ‘Leon and the Place Between’. They liked the story, which is set in a circus and includes all sorts of dark and mysterious magic.

In Maths, the class moved onto addition and subtraction. We will spend the next week going through all the strategies learnt for mental calculations in the previous years before moving onto formal written calculations (column addition and subtraction with/without exchanging).

We also launched our first design and technology unit for the year, which is moving mechanisms-levers and linkages. Please may I ask if you have any cardboard boxes from packaging (amazon deliveries, cereal boxes, etc), please would you be so kind to send them in, as the children will go through a lot of card to make their mechanism prototypes before designing and creating their final product.

The children started their new Topic unit as well, which this term will focus on an ancient civilisation- The Roman invasion of Britain. They designed their own games in PE whilst writing beautiful remembrance prayers and decorated poppies to create our new RE display.

Thank you for those of you, who already sent in items for the Christmas hamper. Our class colour is white this year.

Have a restful and safe weekend,

Ms Varga

Week 8- w.b 1st November 2021

Week 8 w/b 01.10.2021

Welcome back! It was so lovely to see the children return from the half term refreshed and ready for their autumn 2 learning. Today the children were very enthusiastic as we welcomed a new child into our Year 1 family. They were able to share their knowledge of our routines and supported well in exploring our classroom environment. We also watched Year 2 lead us in a Remembrance assembly this morning. They taught us some important facts which we will be exploring further next week.

We began the week by having a reflective class worship where we thank God for keeping us safe during our half term break. The children were respectful and peaceful with their prayer stones when placing them in our special water bowl.

Our new Religion topic is titled ‘Advent to Christmas’. For our first lesson we invited our Seminarian, Dale Cutlan, in to talk to us about what it is like to wait to become a Priest. In this topic we will be learning about Advent and how it is the period of waiting we experience before Christmas.

The children were excited to learn about our new English text called ‘Farmer Duck’. They were so inventive when creating role play props and a class farm. Our Farmer Duck puppet kept sneaking into our pictures- can you spot him?

This week we were revising the tricky ‘r’ controlled phonemes for ar, or and ur. The children worked well in groups to complete different activities to apply their knowledge. We even had a mini school going on using the resources to teach the other children and I even caught them on the teacher chair! Farmer Duck was also keen to learn his phonics.

The children continued to explore colour in their art learning and used their skills to produced some fantastic displays of fireworks.

Thank you for attending the parent consultations this week. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. I will be sending home the photocopied notes and any other resources requested next week.

Enjoy the weekend and stay safe at any firework celebrations.

Miss Lambie and Farmer Duck
