Friday 19th November, 2021

This week in year 5, the children have worked really hard, and a real focus for that hard work has been the fact that it has been Anti-Bullying week. Following two very engaging lessons this week,  they put together short role-play scenarios using sock puppets and props that they made themselves. They also produced well-considered thoughts about how someone who is bullied might feel, and what action everyone concerned should take to stop the bullying. Following their assembly on Kindness and their anti-bullying workshop last week, the children have clearly taken on board the importance of ‘One Kind Word’ and have shown how important it is for everyone to be accepting, tolerant and respectful of others.

In Maths this week the children continued their work on multiplication and division. At the end of this week we started work on factors and multiples. In English the children are working on a unit at the end of which they will write their own Explorer’s Guide to a part of the world. As part of this work the children have been reading out and listening to real-life stories of adventure and survival, which they have greatly enjoyed.

Following another fantastic swimming lesson the children had their karate lesson with Michael. As this will be a weekly session until the end of term, a PE lesson will not be timetabled for a Friday afternoon as this is their PE session. So from next Friday, the children do not need to wear their PE kits to school.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend.

Mr Holmes

This week’s home learning:

  1. Mathletics – log in and complete the activities set. Well done to those children who are regularly logging on.
  2. Read Theory – log in and complete at least five exercises. The comprehension exercises are assigned Monday to Sunday.
  3. Read for at least 15 minutes a day and remember to complete your reading record. Reading logs will be taken in and discussed with the children on Wednesday.
  4. Spellings for this forthcoming week are  hyphenated words:   co-operate, co-exist, co-ordinate, co-own, co-star, re-invent, re-enter, re-write, re-tell, re-emerge, re-ignite, re-heat.
  5. We have started our History topic on the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings this week.  For the next two weeks, I would like the children to research about The Seven Kingdom split.  (Background knowledge: Britain was split into seven kingdoms by the Anglo-Saxons: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Wessex, Sussex and Kent.)  Their research can include drawings and maps to support their findings.

Autumn 2 Week 3

Another busy week of learning in Year 3. Thank you to the parents who came to look at the children’s learning.
This week was Anti-bullying week. Following on from the workshop last week, the children have been listening to different scenarios and explaining how they could show courage and kindness. The theme this year is one kind word. The children have been nominating other children who have been kind during the week. They wrote letters to each other to spread kindness. We made the word kind with our bodies.

In Maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. They have been drawing rounding mountains to show what multiples of 10 the numbers are between. We played a game where they had to add numbers to the rounding mountains and round them to the nearest ten.

In English, we read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and have been writing news reports on the story. The children have been learning to use inverted commas correctly when writing direct speech. We acted out different scenes from the story. The children made excellent freeze frames.

In Religion, we have made a class Advent calendars with a prayer inside each door. Then they retold the story of the Annunciation as a diary recount.

In PE the children have been learning skills to support them when playing tag rugby. They learnt a game called Shadow Shaker to develop their dogging ad marking skills.

Thank you for the creative rainforests! The children were delighted to show their art work to the class and they all look wonderful on display.

This week in Year 4, the children spent time revising their knowledge of the use of speech punctuation in English, whilst in Maths, they have learnt a new mental strategy for addition called the equal sum or rebalancing. In Science, they have used their understanding of how far sound spreads and thought about volume in order to use the school’s floor plan and decide where to put fire alarms to ensure,  that in case of an emergency, everyone can hear them. In RE, the children designed a Liturgy of the Word based on the second Advent reading  and later put some of the Gospels into a historical context linking their two subject areas. In Design and Technology, the class designed and built their second prototype, now using two levers and four linkages to create a mechanism. Very well done!

During the week, the children also had a special focus on anti-bullying, being National Anti-bullying Week. Following on from their workshop from last week, they further distinguished between conflict and bullying, they evaluated given scenarios and came up with strategies to solve them. They also applied this year’s theme, ‘One Kind Word’ when they created ‘Kindness Booklets’ to give to each other in class, celebrating each other’s gifts, talents and uniqueness. The children really enjoyed this activity and it was heartwarming to see how much they appreciate one another other and their class community. I couldn’t be more proud of them.

On Wednesday, in Karate, Sensei Michael thought three blocking techniques to the children who then practiced those in pairs. Well done!

Also well done for the members of our Tuesday Sewing Club, who finished their first full project of creating their very own bookmarks. Beautiful work everyone!

I wish you all a restful and safe weekend,

Ms Varga

Multiplication Thi9s week as an alternative to ‘Hit the Button’, I would like the children to try out another online resource, called ‘Maths Chase’.

https://www.mathschase.com/

It is a free website and does not need login details. Depending on their existing knowledge, the children can set specific tables to practice or can practice their facts mixed, up to 12×12. They can increase the challenge by setting themselves a ‘chaser’ or just start first completing the questions and up the level later. They can also choose their characters and the number of points, they can gain. The website also enables other procedures to practice, such as addition and subtraction, which are also beneficial to maintain fluency, however it is important to keep in mind, that we as a school follow specific strategies for both of those that are not necessarily included on this platform. You can also further challenge yourself by practicing not only your multiplication facts but the corresponding division facts. Have fun!

Science project This term, the children are learning about sound in Science. In order to carry out a practical enquiry in class, I would like the children (in the next 3 weeks) to design and make an instrument using, if possible, recycled materials. The instrument needs to make at least 2 different tones. Here are some possible examples:

Please be ready to present your instrument on Monday, 13th December 2021.

Week 10 wb 15.11.21

Week 10 wb 15.11.21

This week Year 1 worked well to understand what is meant by bullying, how to stop it from happening and how to be a good friend. Anti-bullying week had the theme of ‘One kind word’ so we worked hard to ensure we all said at least one kind word to our friends everyday.  We designed our ideal friend and wrote the qualities that we would be looking for.

Year 1 learnt about adjectives this week and used them to describe each other and then Farmer Duck.

In maths year 1 revised their knowledge of part, whole or cherry diagram to show one more and one less. They also worked really well accessing resources independently and to generate their own numbers which they then ordered from fewest to greatest.

Year 1 really enjoyed their Karate this week and learnt how to do sit ups and press ups safely and with control. They also learnt how to greet each other and their first defence move.

Enjoy the weekend,

Miss Lambie

Friday 12th November 2021

The children have had an exciting week in year 5.  They have been working very hard towards their class assembly, that took place today. It was lovely to see so many parents this morning. The children were delighted to see you all, if a little nervous, but they performed magnificently. The theme of the assembly was Kindness, as it’s World Kindness Day on Saturday 13th November.

In English, we have just started on our new topic of Explorers this week, in which the children will be developing a guide on how to survive in a chosen part of the world.

In Maths, the children have been focussing on multiplication, including what happens when decimals are multiplied by 10, 100 and 1000. Next week work on division will also begin.

In RE, the children have started to learn more about Advent and its significance. This week they made Advent wreaths using small pieces of coloured paper, and started to examine the symbolism of the wreath and the candles.

The children also attended a webinar this morning with other schools on the importance of kindness, so as well as the usual homework this weekend,  an additional task, suggested at the end of the webinar, will be for them to think about doing something kind for someone.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, please especially enjoy tomorrow as it’s World Kindness Day.

Year 6 – 12/11/21

It has been extremely busy and varied in Year 6 this week!

We began Monday with a workshop on waste awareness and recycling, which continued our mission to become better stewards of creation. We were reminded of the importance of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, learnt about what happens at recycling plants and had a go at correctly separate our waste so that it is disposed of or recycled accordingly.

On Tuesday, we had our class Mass in the classroom, in which we focused on Love for One Another. Thank you to Fr Shaun for celebrating a beautiful liturgy with us, and well done to the children for your wonderful reading, singing, and answers during the homily.

On Wednesday, we had our first karate session, in which we learnt the main stances: ready stance, horse-riding stance, sumo stance, forward stance and cat stance. Our resident karate experts Sandro and Lily were keeping an eye on the rest of us and making sure we were doing them correctly. We’re already looking forward to next week’s lesson!

Today, we started our new science topic on Light, and worked in groups to prove that light travels in straight lines.

Week 9 w/b 8th November

Week 9 w/b 08.11.2021

Thank you to Year 5 who led the school in an assembly all about kindness today. It has prepared us well for anti-bullying week next week.

We continued our learning on Remembrance to understand the significance of marking Remembrance Day. We learnt about the signs and symbols we might see, what happens at the Cenotaph in London and then finished our learning by making our very own poppies.

We really enjoyed our first Karate lesson this week! We learnt four different poses and are looking forward to our next session.

As our new Religion topic is titled ‘Advent to Christmas’ we decided to record what we already knew about Advent before we start our preparations next week. We came up with lots of ideas!

This week we were revising the ‘oi’ (Spoil the boy) and ‘ow’ (brown cow) phonemes. The children enjoyed teaching each other the sounds and some were really challenging the other children by seeing if they could spot the sound upside down!

Enjoy the weekend,

Miss Lambie

Reception Week Beginning 8th November 2021

What a very busy week Reception have had this week!

The class started the week participating in a whole school ‘Waste Aware’ assembly, led by the Waste Aware Officer for Hertfordshire. She came to talk to the children about recycling and reusing waste materials.

Reception have now settled so well into their new learning environment that the staff felt that they were ready to eat their lunch in the hall! After a couple of practise sessions, the children felt prepared and had their first ever lunch in the dining room on Monday.

This week in class, the children have been thinking about the theme of remembrance. They observed 2 mins silence in honour of Armistice Day yesterday, listened to the Last Post and learnt about the significance of poppies.

On Wednesday, Reception had their first karate lesson and they absolutely loved it! Their instructor Michael, commented on their wonderful listening skills and learning behaviour. Lessons will commence every Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has a change of suitable footwear if they usually wear shoes to school. Plimsoles/trainers are also now needed on a Monday as we have begun to do PE in the hall. Thank you.

The class have also been busy making props and turning the outside role play area into a church this week. This has proven to be a very popular learning area, where the children have enjoyed applying what they know to their imaginary play!

Finally today, Reception took part in a live webinar, hosted by the Director of Kindness, from the company 52Lives; this centred on being kind and compassionate towards others, and has prepared us for next week’s learning focus on Anti-bullying and World Kindness Day, which falls on Saturday 13th November.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Autumn 2, Week 2

On Monday, we took part in an anti-bullying workshop as a lead up to next week’s Anti-bullying week. During this workshop, the children learnt about using kind words and their power. As part of ‘Maths Week England’, we completed various interactive and practical tasks involving money. In English we have been applying our phonic knowledge in various ways.

In P.E. we have started tag rugby with Miss Pringle and karate with Sensei Michael.

In RE, we have identified signs and symbols of Advent, while in Art we have started to sketch self-portraits.

Have a lovely weekend

Autumn 2 Week 2

In preparation for Anti Bullying Week, the children took part in a workshop to understand how to recognise bullying and how to show kindness to people who are being bullied. The children acted out lots of scenarios to show their understanding. Next week we will complete different activities about bullying and being kind.

In Maths, we have been learning about the magnitude of number. The children have been filling in missing numbers on a number line by finding a halve and a quarter to help justify their answers. Then they have been explaining why they have chosen a number. Please continue halving numbers.

In English, we have been reading newspaper reports and identifying the features. We have been comparing facts and opinions. We made a list of facts about our school and opinions about the school. Next week, the children will be using the skill they have learnt to plan and write their newspaper reports.

In PE, we took part in our first karate session. The children’s focus and participation was excellent. We also learnt how to put tags on in preparation for learning about tag rugby next week.

In Religion, we have been identifying the symbols of Advent. The children made their own Advent wreath and explained what each candle is.

In Science, the children have been learning about how muscles work. The children had the question ‘Do people with longer legs jump the furthest?’ They planned their own investigation to find the answer.

In Geography, we made graphs to show temperatures and described the amount of rainfall.  We also continued learning to play the recorders.
