1st October 2021

In year five we have had another busy week!

Everyone went swimming for the second time, which they greatly enjoyed. If the girls or boys wish to change into their costume before the swimming session at school, we are more than happy to set time aside for them to do this.

In Maths we’ve been finishing our learning on rounding numbers and have just started learning about negative numbers and have been counting forwards and backwards about zero. In English we have continued to learn about the features of biographies through learning more about the life of Mary Anning, a famous palaeontologist.

As it was the feast of St. Vincent De Paul last weekend, we have been learning more about his life and the example he set for us to follow. We’ve also been working on our garden; we prepared the ground and planted the plants that have been kindly donated.  However, we would love to have many more so please do send them into school for the children to add to the class garden.

Week 5

This week the children have written a speech to persuade a king to share his food and performed the speech to the class. Then the children planned and wrote their own fables. I was impressed with their adjectives, conjunctions and prepositions that they used in their writing. They were very proud to write them neatly and display them in the classroom.

In Maths, the children have continued regrouping numbers in a variety of ways and explaining the similarities and difference between numbers. Next week they will ne applying these skills when adding and subtracting. Each day, we are practising to recall the two and five times tables.

In Computing, we have been programming sprites using a program called Scratch.

In Religion, we learnt about St Vincent, the children drew wonderful portraits of St Vincent and thought about how they live out St Vincent values in their lives.

In PE the children have been learning and practising the chest pass and they can find space to receive the ball from their team members.

On Friday, we picked the apples and pears form the trees and used them to make apple and pear crumble.

Have a lovely weekend.

This week, the children in Year 4 carried on with their Place Value learning by comparing, ordering and flexibly regrouping whole numbers. In English, they copied up their first final pieces in their neatest handwriting. These are  now displayed in class. We therefore started a new unit of work, still based on persuasion inspired by a story titled, ‘The day I swapped my dad for two goldfish’. The children enjoyed this book and have written great persuasive paragraphs swapping someone in their families for something valuable or exciting like a real life submarine or a pet puppy.

In Science, as the pictures show, the children used ziplog bags to simulate how the stomach functions and why it has an important part in the human digestion, whilst also learning the names and roles of the rest of the basic parts like the liver or pancreas. In Geography, they started recording some of their ideas creatively about the advantages and disadvantages of living in megacities whilst in RE they looked at the life of St Vincent de Paul and made links between the Vincentian values and their lives.

We also started rehearsing for their class assembly on St Francis of Assisi for next Friday. Great first reading from everyone.

Thank you again for the lovely plants; our class garden looks lovely.

Have a lovely and safe weekend,

Ms Varga

English As a preparation for the children’s next writing piece, I would like them to research a favoured destination.

It can be a holiday location like Center Parks, or a theme park like Chessington World of Adventures or Lego Land. It can be a museum like the Natural History Museum with all its dinos or the London Eye, etc.

I would like them to create a plan where in simple bullet points they have about 10 facts they can include in their writing later.

  • Where is the attraction?
  • How many people visit every year?
  • What is exciting about the attraction?
  • What facilities are there? (restaurants, cafes, pools, etc)
  • Anything that makes it unique?
  • What age range is it suitable for?
  • Why would you recommend that attraction to someone else?

I am NOT expecting the children to write paragraphs. All we need is a bank of facts and ideas that the children can have in front of them, so they can lift those details into their persuasive pieces. About an attraction that they feel excited about to motivate them. Please be prepared to present your facts by Thursday, 7th October 2021

Reception Class Week Beginning 27.9.21

This week, the children have been thinking about their families and how every family is special and unique. The children really enjoyed sharing photos of their own family and talking about the things that they love to do together.

Thank you for supplying your child with such beautiful photos!

Reception have also had fun exploring the story ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. They children engaged in a range of activities throughout the week such as: making their own stick man from twigs found in the outside area, writing their own Stick Man stories, painting the family tree using their hands, printing using natural resources gifted by trees, and  making Stick Man 3D collages.

This afternoon, Reception had a phone call from Stick Man’s wife, who asked them for help to find Stick Man; he had gone missing again! The class were only too happy to help and searched outside straight away. Luckily, Abigail spotted him in a tree, in the Peace Garden. He had apparently been chased up there by a ginger cat and had hurt both his legs…..he was a sick, stuck man!!!

The class rescued him from the tree and Ms Pemberton rang Mrs Stick Man to say that he had been found. She was delighted and very relieved!!

As one of our activities to encourage communication, listening and turn-taking skills this week, the children had fun trying to guess what was inside a box. There were some fantastic guesses and some very funny guesses too ! This is a great game to play as a family on a rainy day!

Thank you to all of the families who supplied us with plants this week. They finally went into the ground yesterday and the class flowerbed is looking lovely!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Year 2, Week 4

I have been very impressed with the children’s attitude to learning this week. They have edited and published their space adventure stories, which are now proudly on display in our classroom. Next week we will start a poetry unit in English.

In Maths next week we will be finding equivalent calculations and using our number bonds for addition and subtraction.

We have been very busy in Science this week identifying different habitats and classifying things into three different groups; 1. alive 2. not alive 3. never been alive. We have also used secondary sources (books and the internet) to research our own questions about living things and their habitats.

St Vincent house  celebrated their feast day this week and in RE we discussed how we could be more like St Vincent.

Year 1 Week 4 w/b 27.09.2021

This week Year 1 joined in the whole school celebrations and learning on St. Vincent de Paul. The feast day was on Monday so the children attended an assembly before the St. Vincent team enjoyed an extra treat. During the week we learnt about St. Vincent, his life and his work. The children knew that he was a Saint but by the end of the week we had learnt 15 facts on him. I wonder how many they will be able to tell you at the weekend. The children learned that cameras were not invented when he was alive so they had a go at an observational portrait drawing of St. Vincent.

The weather was rather unpredictable this week but Year 1 managed to enjoy the outside environment and explore what the season of autumn has to offer. Year 1 created framed autumn artwork and continued to develop their motor skills in retrieving autumn leaves.

The Fairy Garden was blooming this week!

The mud kitchen was busy with preparations underway for a pop up café. The children enjoyed making ‘lunch’ for the adults- dried pasta and rice, yummy! We even had a table cloth, candle and flowers because they said it needs to be ‘a fancy place!’

The children enjoyed being creative when exploring how 2-D shapes appear in 3-D shapes.

We found a playdough recipe that worked- thanks!

Our Tricky word for this week was ‘when’. The children learnt that the wh is a digraph but also we can break it up to w-hen and they enjoyed clucking around the classroom like hens. They all seemed very intrigued by the stamping activity.

Home learning

  • A phonics activity and spellings have been sent home today. Please may you return this by next Wednesday.
  • The children enjoyed creating their own finger space lolly pop stick in school and wanted to take it home but then we wouldn’t have anything to use in class! Therefore, I have given every child a lolly pop stick that they can decorate and keep at home to encourage their use of finger spaces in any home learning.
  • Please remember the children still have their online access to their book library which can be used alongside the reading book that is sent home.
  • Please see your child’s bag for information about how to view the individual photos that were taken today.

*Please ensure your child’s reading book and record are in school every day so we can read with them as frequently as we can.*

Please can children only bring the navy book bags to school and not rucksacks.

Have a good weekend,

Miss Lambie
