Week 3

Another fun, busy week in Year 3! In Maths, we have continued using equipment and pictures to make numbers to 100. We have been using mathematical vocabulary to compare numbers and have been investigating different ways of making 3-digit numbers.

In English, we read War and Peas by Michael Foreman. We imagined we met the mean king and retold our experience meeting him. We designed our own imaginary world of food and wrote some excellent descriptions.

In Religion, we have been thinking about how we learn about God.

In Science, we learnt about how plants make their own food and how animals get their food.

We had fun learning the letter A and B then we played Hot Cross Buns on the recorder. In Geography, we compared the weather in July in different countries. In Computing we were introduced to programming blocks and identify the objects in the Scratch project (sprites and backdrops)

Thank you for coming to the Meet the Teacher Meeting, if you were unable to attend all the information is on the Year 3 class page.

Thank you for sending in plants for our class garden. If you have not, please could you send a plant in next week.

The children in Year 4 had yet another busy week.

In English, they spent a few days planning and writing their own ‘Dirty Beast’ poems inspired by Roald Dahl before starting their new unit of work based on David Wiesner’s Flotsam. They became beach detectives on Thursday, opening bags of flotsam left behind, trying to guess who it must have belonged to. They used their reasoning and inference skills well.

In Maths, they built whole numbers using Dienes equipment and place value counters to show their understanding of the value of each digit in 3 and 4 digit numbers. They extended this task by re-grouping numbers flexibly, thinking about core facts such as how many tens make a hundred, etc.

In Re, the children looked at the 4 sources of Revelation and reflected on the first one, Creation. They wrote beautiful explanations on what they have learnt about God’s nature through his work of art.

In Pe, we played team building games and moved on in our multi-skill unit by re-introducing throwing and catching. In Geography, the children reasoned about why certain cities in the UK grow faster than others, whilst in Computing they carried on extending their basic Scratch designs from last week. In Science, we looked at types of enquiries and ways of testing.

Thank you for those of you who sent in plants to go into our Class Gardens. We tidied the bed on Thursday and started planting our bulbs and other seasonal plants.

It has been lovely to see the children Tuesday afternoon in Sewing Club. I introduced three basic stitch types (running, back and cross stitch) which the children practiced on pieces of felt. Great progress in just one lesson! I look forward to seeing them again next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga

Spelling Please log onto Spelling Frame and practice your weekly words one last time before testing yourself on them.

https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/9/2-The-I-sound-spelt-y-elsewhere-than-at-the-end-of-words

(you do not need registration to access these activities)

Reading Please log onto Read Theory and complete 2 activities.

https://readtheory.org/auth/login

Reading records were also sent home today with the children’s reading targets set by their previous teacher. The children should record their own reading regularly including a brief summary of what they have read, the date and the title of the book.

Multiplication Please log onto ‘Hit the button’ and spend 10-15 minutes practicing your  multiplication facts. You can start practicing them by tables, however you should try and extend this by practicing them mixed up, as well.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Maths/English Please log onto Study Ladder with your existing login details and access the ‘Pod’ assigned to you.

https://www.studyladder.co.uk/

Please start your learning with the ‘Tutorial’ explaining expanded notation. We call that ‘re-grouping’ in class. We identify the value of each digit in a number and re-write it as a number sentence.

E.g.:

1257= 1000+200+50+7

It’s different from ‘decomposition’, which would be flexibly breaking a number up, such as:

1257=800+200+240+17

With ‘regrouping’ the children can prove they understand the value of each digit according to its place within the number so later they can re-group in a more complex way:

1257= (10×100)+(20×10)+57

In English, I would like the children to create an A4, colourful learning poster. I would like them to use their learning from this week and think about 4-5 pieces of ‘flotsam’ (debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident) that would represent them the best.

Would it be:

a book, a pair of football boots, a tinful of Pokemon cards, a box of special sweets, ballet shoes, a specific soft toy?

Could I guess who they are just by looking at their chosen ‘Flotsam’? Could their classmates guess?

Please be prepared to present your poster by Tuesday.

Year 2, Week 2

Gardening

Thank you for the donations to our class gardens, as you can see we have been busy preparing the soil and planning where to put the plants.  The children have loved taking ownership of these gardens and are looking forward to watching them bloom. I was also very pleased with the care they took, when rehoming any insects they found. We still have the lovely flowerbed outside our classroom to tend to so if you are able to provide any perennials it would be very much appreciated.

Maths

We continue to develop our fluency to 20 and have estimated where numbers might go along a number line.

PE

In PE we have started to develop our dodging, passing and receiving skills in netball and football.  I have been very impressed with everyone’s sportsmanship.

Year 6 – 17/09/21

In RE this week, we begun learning about the four sources of revelation. We went outside and looked for where God reveals himself to us in nature, and we thought about traditions in our faith which come from our beliefs in God.

In English, we continued our with our unit linked to evacuation. The children role played being evacuated, which resulted in some beautiful writing.

We began our Science topic on the circulatory system and keeping healthy. We learnt about the key components of the circulatory system and acted the system out on the field, with children being the heart, the lungs, red blood cells and muscles of the body.

Some of the children helped Mrs McDonald to weed the class flowerbed ready for planting, which will be symbolic of our Year of Growth. Please continue to bring in winter bedding plants or spring bulbs, so that we can watch our flowerbed evolve over the course of the year.

Year 6 – 10/09/21

It’s been an exciting and very busy first full week back! This morning, Year 6 attended Mass then had a leadership morning at the church, during which they found out about inspirational female leaders in the modern world, and discussed how they displayed different qualities of Mary. This then led them to think about the qualities that will make them good leaders and role models this year at Pope Paul. On Monday, they will be applying for their roles of responsibility, which include House Captains, Liturgy Leaders, Fairtrade Leaders, Laudato Si’ Leaders and Sports Captains. If they would like to apply to be a House Captain, they need to prepare a speech to make in Monday’s house meetings. Other roles require a letter to be written to Mrs Heymoz, detailing why they would like the role and why they are suitable for it.

On Wednesday, the school celebrated the birthday of Our Lady. In Year 6, we identified and discussed the qualities of Mary. We also made origami flowers with birthday messages on, which were then presented to Mary in the Peace Garden. They look beautiful and are now on display at the church.

In Maths this week, we have concentrated on place value, whilst in English, we began a unit based on a WW2 text, Children of the King. We have explored the theme of evacuation and have started learning about persuasive techniques. This links with our History topic for this term – Potters Bar at War – which we will be starting next week.

Home learning begins this week, and is due on Wednesday 15th September.

Happy Birthday Mary!

During a busy week in Year 4, the children revised their key writing tools such as adverbs, conjunctions and noun phrases in English. We put emphasis on handwriting and introduced the first set of spelling words.

In Maths, we introduced Roman numerals and looked at the history of this ancient number system. We put our learning into action by writing the date using Roman numerals, as well, which we will carry on doing in the future. We also introduced Place Value as our first topic beside completing mental fluency tasks and multiplication practice.

In Science, we looked at facts the children already knew about healthy eating, the health of our teeth and digestion whilst in Geography, they started locating megacities around the world, using atlases and satellite pictures.

In PE, we played invasion games and in Art we used different media to create beautiful birthday cards for Mary.

The children really enjoyed this Wednesday’s celebration and completed a lovely piece of learning comparing the qualities of Mary to other contemporary women who changed the world. They also took part in a beautiful class Act of Worship launching the ‘Year of Growth’.

Well done children for a great start to the year!

I am looking forward to see you all for Monday’s ‘Meet the Teacher’ session starting at 2.30pm in the hall!

Week 2

We have had a busy week in Year 3! In Maths, we have been using equipment to make different numbers in different ways to show the value of each digit. Then the children explained the similarities and difference between two numbers.

In English, we have been reading different fables and identifying their morals. Then we compared different versions of the same fable. Can you find some fables at home to read?

On Wednesday, we had a wonderful day celebrating Mary’s birthday. We made cards, decorated our Peace Garden, sang songs, ate lollies and cake, and then danced. The children were presented with the question “How do we see Mary in art? They looked at different pictures of Mary and discussed what they told us about her.

In History, we wrote and presented weather reports. In Computing we started using a program called Scratch and we had our first recorder lesson!

Our focus in PE this term is Invasion Games. We played games to develop the skill of dodging. The children loved playing football at lunchtime on Wednesday with a football coach.

Home Learning

Next week the children will design their own imaginary world to support their writing. In preparation, please cut out images from food magazines or food labels. They need lots of different types of food/drink pictures that they would like to be in their world.

Spellings – This term’s spellings are on the spelling tab on our class page. Please practise spellings and think about how you would use each word in a sentence.

I look forward to seeing you at Meeting the Teacher Meeting on Tuesday 14th September at 2.30pm.

10th September, 2021

It has been a busy week in Year 5!  The children have settled back into the classroom routines well and have been very eager to start their new topics in many areas of the curriculum. We have also welcomed two new members to the class – VJ and Nicholas who I am sure will see how special our class and school community are.

On Wednesday, along with the rest of the school, the children celebrated Our Lady’s birthday.  As part of the celebrations, some of the children in Year 5 were chosen to decorate the special birthday cake that was to be presented to the rest of the school and they did a marvellous job working together as a team with Ms Hilton.  A picture of Our Lady was framed in a love heart and surrounded by edible stars and  flowers.

The children each made their own birthday card and carried them in procession to the statue of Our Lady in the Peace Garden.  In the afternoon, they danced in the school playground and had an ice lolly which quenched their thirst from the hot sun.

In RE the children have continued to discuss the Year of Growth and examined why Mary appeared to Bernadette in Lourdes.

In Maths, the children have been developing and building upon their knowledge of place value with numbers up to one million whilst in English the focus has been on building upon their vocabulary knowledge and using this to develop their poetry skills.

It was lovely to see you this afternoon at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ meeting.  I have updated the class page with the power point that was shown and information sheets that were handed out. If you have any queries, please contact me via the school office.

The Home Learning for this week is set out below:

Year 1 first week of term

Week 1 w/b 06.09.2021

First day

Year 1 have had a lovely start to the new school year and have been so excited to share all our news with our friends again. We went to our first ever school assembly where we were presented with our prayer cloth and candle which we used to dress our prayer table and reflection space in class. We have been enjoying the peaceful class worships in the mornings of our first week with our new candle. We had special prayer stones that we used to make prayer promises to our class before presenting the stone into our basket. We promised to be kind, caring, loving towards everyone and to treat others how we wish to be treated.

First Week of Year 1

Our second ever whole school assembly on Monday introduced us to Pope Paul’s ‘Year of Growth’. It made us think how we could design and make a tree display in our class that would grow throughout the year just like us.

Year 1 had an amazing day for Mary’s Birthday on Wednesday. I was very impressed with how the children worked together to share their knowledge when explore our big question ‘Who is Mary?’ Our cards tried to blow away in the wind, but we managed to display them before they tangled too much. Keep an eye out and Church this weekend and see if you can spot our birthday cards.

As we continue with our transition from Reception to Year 1 we have been focusing on our thoughts and feelings through ‘The Colour Monster’ story and looked so relaxed during our deep breathing exercise as we tried to understand the feeling of ‘calm’. The children created the features of a front cover and designed their own in our first English lesson.  You can listen to the story from home here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih0iu80u04Y

Year 1 are exploring common 2Dshapes in their first math topic and worked amazingly in groups to fix a 2D shape puzzle problem. We will be learning all about 3D shapes next week.

P.E.

Our PE days are Wednesdays (Football on the field) and Thursdays (movement skills on the field, playground, or hall if weather permits.) Children should wear their full Pope Paul PE kits to school on those days, including sweatshirts rather than school jumpers or cardigans for colder weather. We loved our first football lesson with coach Joe on Wednesday and enjoyed learning four new warm up games for future P.E. lessons.

Home learning

We will continue to assess the children in phonics and reading over the next two weeks before sending reading books home. This will ensure that we are accurately sending books with sounds in that the children can read and enjoy with you at home. In the meantime, you may continue to use the online eBook service via Collins that you used in Reception. Please use the texts from Reception that are on the eBook bookshelf. Children logins are the same as last year and can be found on each child’s Google Classroom if you are unsure. Home learning will be sent home from next Friday and every Friday thereafter and is due the following Wednesdays. More details will be shared next Thursday 16th September for Year 1 Meet the Teacher meeting at 2:30pm in the school hall.

Please ensure that all belongings are named clearly. I have one size 26 cardigan left from Tuesday and I know some parents have said that they are missing some items. Please check the school bags to make sure that nothing belonging to someone else has accidentally been taken home. Children need a water bottle and hat in school everyday as the weather is still unpredictable.

Have a safe and happy weekend,

Miss Lambie
