Summer 2 Week 2

We have come to the end of another busy week and we have been fully emerged in Greek mythology. We have followed Odysseus on his agonising journey and we have now created our own beasts for him to battle next. I was so impressed with Year 5’s creative ideas.

In maths we have been using protractors to draw our own angles and triangles. Next week we will be moving on to converting between units of measure. This weekend, try and brush up on how many centimetres in a metre, how many grams in a kilogram and how many millilitres in a litre.

Thankfully the sun was still shinning this week for our cricket lesson on Wednesday. Year 5 had a great time practising catching with Coach Ben. In Science we have begun our new unit on materials. Today we spent time thinking about science as an enquiry subject and the 5 different types of enquiry we do. See if your child can remember an example of each of these:

Observation over time

identifying and classifying

pattern seeking

research

comparative and fair testing

Year 4 has had, yet another lovely week in the (mostly) sunshine.

On Monday, we painted silhouette pictures of Castle Groteskew from our class book Stich Head to support our descriptive writing. On Tuesday, we used the iPads to create Popplets in Science. First, we came up with really interesting questions to start our new topic, States of Matter and then we moved on to sorting objects according to their state (liquid, solid or gas).

On Wednesday, the children had the pleasure of working with Coach Ben to further their cricket skills where they were focusing on different throw types for bowling and fielding.

On Thursday, Year 4 had their first Djembe drumming lesson with Caz, which they enjoyed tremendously. They have learnt to introduce themselves using a special pattern; they have practiced tone and base sounds on the drums and started working towards their first West African song. Well done!

The children also worked on their Scratch projects during Computing and finished their fraction learning with a nice problem solving lesson.

Although rain is predicted, I hope you have a lovely weekend.

Year 2 Blog 11/06/2021

It has been a busy first week back filled with arrays, collages, cricket, tennis and cheese puffs to name but a few things.

Say CHEESE!!!

In Geography, we have been learning about why it matters where our food comes from. Why are there so many dairy farms in Devon? The children learnt about the main geographical features of the physical landscape of Devon. We researched the weather in Devon, looking at the average annual weather conditions and we compared it with those of the rest of the United Kingdom.

We know that milk is used as a raw material in a wide range of dairy products. The children found out how cheese is manufactured on one Devon farm. We shared our favourite recipes with cheese as the star ingredient before making some cheese puffs!

Year 6 – 11/06/21

It’s been a very busy first week back for our final half term. In RE, we began learning about discipleship; in Maths, we looked at how we could manipulate equations to work out derived calculations; in Science, we planned an investigation that will help us understand how Darwin came up with his theory of evolution by natural selection; in Geography with Mrs McDonald, they learned about different ways that rocks can erode in The Valley of Rocks; in PE, we practised batting in a session with Chance to Shine cricket charity; in English, we started our new unit based on Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide To The Fantastical World Around You, and yesterday we learned all about the mischievous and opportunistic Boggart. The children wrote diary entries about what havoc they would wreak if they were Boggarts, and freeze-framed their mischief!

PE:

We ended the week by spending time with our reading partners, teaching them ball skills. As always, the Year 6s were fantastic with their partners, encouraging them and making them laugh.

We have also commenced rehearsals for High School Musical. Your home learning for this week is to learn your lines by heart and to practise the songs so that you are really familiar with them. I have created a playlist to help you practise your vocal parts, which you can access here.

Access the HSM script here.

Enjoy the sunny weekend, and I’ll see you on Monday.

Reception Week Beginning 7.6.21

Welcome back!

I hope you all had a wonderful half term break. The children were very excited to be back on Monday morning, full of lovely stories about their experiences over the week!

This week, the learning focus has been about the life cycle of butterflies and the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children have shown such a strong interest in the mini beasts outside recently and so were very quickly captivated by this mini topic. To bring the learning to life, Reception took delivery of some tiny caterpillars on Monday. The class have been observing them daily and noticing the changes; it has been incredible to see how quickly they have grown already! The children are really looking forward to watching them transform into butterflies and have been using their scientific skills to make predictions about size and colour.

On Wednesday another exciting thing happened! As part of their transition program, Reception ate their lunch in the dining hall for the first time, just like the rest of the school! As they are all going into Year 1 soon, it is really important that they become familiar with the different staff, routines and rooms around the school. The class had a practise in the morning and learnt where to sit, when to go to the serving hatch and what to do when they have finished eating and so they all knew exactly what they needed to do at lunchtime. They were absolutely brilliant!

This afternoon for fun, every child was given a random country to support during the upcoming Euro football tournament. The country name is in their school bag. If possible, please can they make a flag of their given country and bring it into school at the start of next week. Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Week 8

I hope you had a wonderful half term! Year 1 have taken advantage of the beautiful weather with tennis and cricket this week. The children enjoyed learning the two games and had fun taking part.

In Maths, we have been learning to turn quarter turns, half turns, three quarter turns clockwise and anti-clockwise. Then we used these skills to read the time on a clock to o’clock and half past. The children drew clocks on the playground and used themselves as the hands. Please continue to practise these skills at home.

In Literacy, the children have been following and writing instructions. They have learnt what to include when writing good instructions. After reading a book How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth, the children acted it out.

In Science, we planted cress and have left it in different places to investigate what helps it to grow well.

On Friday, the children used the ipads for Computing. They instructed the turtle to move in different directions.

Year 4 has had a lovely first week back, helped greatly by the hot and sunny weather!

We completed learning based on our new class book, Stich Head by Guy Bass. The children loved listening to the adventures of this little creature and can’t wait to start writing their own (child friendly) horror stories.

In Maths, we carried on with our fraction learning, placing unit and non-unit fractions on a number line.

In Science, we completed some tasks from the 30 days Go Wild activity pack using the iPads. The children also started collecting items to go onto our Nature Table and I would like to invite you Dear Parents to support them in this by keeping an eye out for any treasures whilst out and about with your families this weekend. We are looking for interesting or unique stones and fossils; seeds and leaves; flowers or petals of unusual colours; shells and feathers. Thank you!

On Wednesday, we also had the pleasure of welcoming Coach Tom into our school who lead a fantastic Cricket lesson which we repeated on Thursday afternoon.

In RE, we looked at Mark’s Gospel and started discussing the meaning of Discipleship and ways we can be learners of Jesus.

Finally, just a quick note to say that due to the hot weather, our upstairs classroom heats up quite quick during the day, so please keep sending in the children with full water bottles. We do have jugs of water in the classroom and the children are great at refilling their bottles independently. Also please send in sunhats (labelled with names if possible) for break times and PE lessons. PE days are WEDNESDAYS AND THURSDAYS this term.

Thank you and have a lovely and safe weekend,

Ms Varga and Mrs McNamara

Summer 2 Week 1

Our first week back was certainly a scorcher! I hope you all enjoyed the lovely weather over the half term.

In maths this week, we have been learning about angles. We have been identifying, acute, obtuse, reflex, right and straight angles and ordering them. Year 5 used this knowledge to make some wonderful angle pictures.

In English, we have begun our new unit on Greek mythology. Our text is ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’. So far we have seen him triumph in the Trojan War, escape Polyphemus the cyclops and meet Circe. Next week we will design our own beasts and environments for Odysseus to encounter.

On Wednesday, we took part in cricket with Coach Tom. The children worked on their batting and fielding skills in a range of games.

Have a wonderful weekend

Summer 2 Week 1

This week Year 3 have found themselves immersed in their new History topic, Ancient Egypt. They have created some fantastic pharaoh portraits and scarabs in Art using their collage skills. While in History they have used secondary sources to research some of their own questions. In English they have used their inference skills to ask and answer questions based on the story ‘ The Egyptian Cinderella’ by Shirley Climo.

During Maths we have applied our mental maths and place value skills this week to answer mathematical word problems. We also enjoyed starting our cricket unit in P.E. with the All Stars cricket coach Tom and have started learning to play the recorder with Mrs McNamara.

On Friday we held a Mass of Thanksgiving in class. The children read beautifully and were very respectful. Thank you Mrs Joyce for your help and thank you Father Shaun and Francesca for preparing the children for their First Holy Communions.
