Summer 1 Week 5

In English this week, Year 5 wrote their narratives they have building up to for the past few weeks. I was really impressed by their use of repetition for effect and the powerful verbs they included to provide interest for their reader. Next week, these will be edited and written up in their best handwriting.

In maths we have continued to focus on division.  Year 5 have put a lot of effort into understanding the short method and have been diving 4 digit numbers by a single digit. Next week, we will be expressing remainders in a range of ways.

It was the feast of the Ascension on Thursday and Year 5 took part in a mass at Our Lady and St Vincent via live stream. Mrs Moccia was pleased with the learning the produced on the significance of this event.

Today we started our entries for the Royal Mail Heroes stamp competition. This involved Year 5 thinking about who their hero of the coronavirus pandemic is and commemorating them with a stamp.

We finished our week with some Golden Time outside. It felt well deserved after the soggy week we had.

Have a wonderful weekend

Parent’s Meeting

Reception Week Beginning 3.5.21

Despite being a three day week, Reception have fitted a lot of experiences and learning in!

On Tuesday, the class received a letter from The Natural History Museum asking them if they would be prepared to take care of a rare dinosaur egg while they had their new cabinets fitted. Reception were over the moon to be asked and immediately wrote back to accept!

The next day, Mrs Heymoz visited Reception, bringing with her a very special package that had just been delivered by a security guard! It was the dinosaur egg! The class were so excited! They noticed that the package had an unfamiliar word ‘fragile’ written on it. Luckily Joe knew that this meant ‘delicate’ and Noemi also knew that it meant that it was breakable! The children decided to put it on the prayer table for the time being and everyone thought that it was a probably a good idea to write signs, asking people not too touch the egg. Reception then began to plan ways to display the egg while protecting it and will implement these plans early next week!

Today Reception Class joined the rest of the school in their first ever May Procession to honour Mary.  The children made their teachers so proud with their reverence and exemplary behaviour.

This afternoon, the class joined their Year 6 reading partners once again, for a special PE session on the field. It really is so wonderful to watch their special relationships slowly develop!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Year 6 – 07/05/21

This morning we honoured Mary in our annual May Crowning Procession. Thomas and Tito led us in a beautiful assembly, then the whole school followed Heather and Rory – the eldest girl and boy in the school – into the Peace Garden where each child presented their flower to Our Lady. Thank you for bringing so many beautiful flowers and for your reverence during the procession.

This afternoon, we joined our Learning Partners once more, this time coming up with games or obstacle courses using hoops, beanbags and balls. The beaming smiles on everyone’s faces and Y6’s fantastic leadership skills were such a delight to see!

Here is the tutorial video we used to make origami tulips this morning, for those who wanted to make more at home:

Remember your Science home learning due for next Friday 14th May: to create your own A4 painting/drawing of a famous scientist, using any medium you like.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Summer 1 Week 4

During our short week, we planned a narrative in English,  used a formal written method to divide and planned our own science investigations about parachutes. Today we honoured Mary through our May procession. Thank you for the flowers you brought in, they helped to make our outside alter incredibly beautiful. In Re, Year 5 learnt about the Rosary with Mrs McNamara and today we thought about why Mary is so important to us. This generated a lot of interesting discussion and questions.

Have a wonderful weekend

Bring flowers of the rarest, bring flowers of the fairest

From garden and woodland and hillside and vale;

Our full hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling

The praise of the loveliest flower of the vale.

O Mary, we crown you with blossoms today,

Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.

Today we celebrated the month of May by holding our May procession to honour Our Lady.  We reflected on the life of Our Lady and processed towards the Peace Garden where we placed our flowers.

In English, the children completed the first draft of their animal adventure stories. We are looking forward to editing our writing next week and making additions. We have been revising number and place value in Maths. I have been very impressed with everyone’s number facts and mental maths fluency.

There are plenty of green fingers in Year 2 and we have enjoyed planting onions and tending to the flowerbeds this week. There are many packets of seeds to sow next week… especially the giant sunflower seeds. We are hoping for a bumper crop!

Week 4

On Friday, we honoured Mary by placing flowers around her. The children were respectful throughout. Then the children sat in the peace garden and sketched a picture of Mary.

This week we have been learning to order and compare numbers on a number line. If the number line ended in 20, we thought about what number would be in the middle, then we looked at what the number line could be counting in – ones, twos, fives or tens.

In English, we have been learning about plurals, when to add s and when to add es. We have also been practising to spell tricky words and Year 1 words, please continue to practise at home.

In Science we have been learning about the different parts of a plant. Next week we will be asking questions about apples to help us to plan how we might find the answers to our questions. Please bring an apple in on Wednesday, we will be using them for Science and printing in Art.

In Science, we read an article in the news about the new rover Perseverance that landed on the moon. The children wrote their own news reports on it. Jack P then made a lego rover at home.

We planted potatoes in the school gardens so we will be watering them each day and observing the changes.

Friday, 7th May 2021

Although, it has been only a short week, children were very busy in Year 4. On Tuesday, we made model houses to support our descriptive writing based on the book, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. Thank you so much to all of you Parents, who sent in beautiful flowers to help us with this project. In the afternoon, Mr Mills braved the rain out and led a fantastic tennis session, where we started focusing on different stroke types, such as backhand and forehand.

On Wednesday, we looked at Science in the news and used iPads to research Perseverance and Curiosity, the 2 most recent Mars missions. Children were fascinated by the facts they found on Nasa’s website about the rovers and we had great discussions about the possibility of future life on the Red Planet.

On Friday, children participated in a beautiful May Procession and completed learning about Mary. They also carried on with programming and followed on form last week’s Ten Ten module.

Have a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga and Mrs McNamara

English Please listen to our  class story for the last time. Pay special attention to the scene where the pig sees the house of flowers for the first time. On a piece of paper please create a word bank that you could use for your description. Think about the 5 senses:

What could the pig see, smell, hear and feel. (taste might not be useful in this part).
