Week Beginning 19.4.21 Reception

It has been a very busy and exciting start to the new term!

For the past two weeks, the children have been focussing on farm life and the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This all began with a letter that Reception received from some local goats in Potters Bar. They claimed to be having problems with an unreasonable troll, who was being particularly mean and not letting them cross their bridge. They asked the children for some urgent help. The class wasted no time at all designing and making new troll proof bridges and thinking of creative ways to cross the river safely. The children have also been very busy writing their own versions of the story, role playing and hot seating the different characters, making puppets, painting pictures, creating clay models, making and playing with masks and writing apology letters from the troll!

In Religion, the class have been learning about some of the Resurrection stories and demonstrating their own understanding through a number of different creative ways.

This week, Reception had a fantastic time getting to know all of the visiting farm animals. Everyone decided unanimously, that they couldn’t possibly choose a favourite, as they were all so cute! Grace and Matilda said that it was the best day of their lives and everyone else agreed! The experience inspired the children to do lots of fabulous drawing and writing about the animals they saw.

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

The children this week had an amazing opportunity to learn about farm animals and about ways to care for them. The Ark Farm’s visit on Tuesday allowed them to have a closer look at animals such as a donkey, a pig, some lambs, chickens, ducks as well as rabbits, guinea pigs and even a hedgehog. The children loved stroking the animals on display and recorded lots of newly learnt facts about them later on in class.

In English, we have completed our first big write of the term. A newspaper article based on our class book, The three little wolves and the big bad pig. In Maths, we started our new unit of fractions, using Cuisenaire rods for the first time.

We have completed our daily mile and in Design and Technology, finished our circuits and switches for our bedside lamps. Today in our Computing session we learnt through using Scratch how to use the forever and repeat programming blocks.  The children enjoyed programming three dinosaur sprites to dance!!  They finished off their afternoon, enjoying their fruit kebabs!

RE As a preparation for our RE learning based on the symbols we use in Mass to refer to the Resurrection of Jesus, we would like the children to research the Paschal Candle (one of the object in Church, we are going to look at next week). We would like the children to present their learning on an A4 piece of paper (handwritten or typed) with pictures-if possible- as we are going to stick these into their RE books.

Week 2

A fun and busy week in Year 1! On Tuesday, the children were delighted to see the farm animals in our playground. They stroked and fed the animals and learnt about what they like to eat. Then they wrote a recount of their experience. Their writing was fantastic! In the afternoon, the children made farm animals using clay and painted them later in the week.

In Maths, the children have been drawing cherry models and bar models to solve different calculations and to help them to understand the link between addition and subtraction. They also corrected problems given to them and explained the mistakes that they identified.

In PE, the children learnt to play the game rounders. We focused on how important teamwork is when playing a competitive game.

In Science we observed the tulips in our garden carefully and drew and coloured them in. Their attention to detail was brilliant!

On Friday, the children learn the story of St George and retold it in their own words.

The highlight of this week was having the farm visiting the school! Have a look at everyone’s excited faces as they meet and stroke the animals!

Also this week, the children finished making their marble runs for their D&T project. Some were more successful than others, but it was excellent to see the teams evaluating and modifying as they worked on their structures.

Well done to the Liturgy Group for preparing and leading this morning’s assembly on St George’s Day.

View their excellent re-enactment of the story of St George here.

What an exciting week it has been! The highlight of our week was the visit from Ark Farm! Year 2 enjoyed seeing and petting all the different animals… especially the sleepy hedgehog!

We thoroughly enjoyed this farm experience and we are looking forward to doing our big English write! Year 2 are basing their narrative write on The Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith.

Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but it’s on the wrong side of the road from the Park where there’s a beautiful lily pond and plenty of juicy slugs, worms and snails!

The busy road is dangerous but Max is determined to make his way across. If humans can do it, why can’t hedgehogs?

His first attempt ends in a nasty bump on the head and, when Max tries to speak, he realises his words are all mixed up. He is no longer a hedgehog but a hodge-heg!

Everyone delighted in meeting the hodgeheg… I mean the hedgehog …and Year 2 came up with lots of wonderful adjectives to describe the hedgehog!

In Art, we made our own hedgehogs out of clay. We sculpted the bodies of our hedgehogs and we used clay slip to attach the eyes, legs and spikes.

This week, Year 4 took part in a very enthusiastic Easter egg hunt on Monday and spent this week focusing on the Resurrection story according to Mark as well as post Resurrection stories such as The Road to Emmaus or Doubting Thomas. The children painted beautiful water -colour pictures inspired by these wonderful Gospel stories to capture the meaning and importance of Our Lord’s Resurrection.

On Tuesday and Thursday, the children refreshed their knowledge of basic tennis skills in preparation for next week, when they will have the privilege to work with Mr Mills who will teach tennis in the remaining weeks of this term.

This week the children have spent time on their D&T project – the bedside lamp, during which they have finalised their structures, attached all added features, as well as painting their models. Next week, they will be assembling their circuits with switches to complete their lamp.

The children looked at programming in ICT and with Scratch programming language, they learnt how to create a programme to draw various 2 D shapes.

In English, the children have read two traditional tales to launch our whole school writing project based on farms. The class are very much looking forward to next week’s farm visit on Tuesday.

The children have also continued to complete their daily mile as well, where they are improving greatly with regards to the number of laps achieved. Well done!

We wish Max a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in class soon!

Have a lovely weekend,

Research Project In preparation for next Tuesday’s farm visit, I would like you to create a learning poster where you explain how to look after animals. They don’t need to necessarily be farm animals but animals in general, including house pets.

Think about their diet, a safe ‘home’, tending to their physical needs (fur, teeth, nails, etc.)

Here are a few links to start you off:

Please be ready to present these posters on Tuesday, 20th April- the day of the farm visit.

Summer Term Week 1

On Monday, we had fun celebrating Easter! We listened to the story of the Resurrection and then had an Easter egg hunt. The children were delighted with their Easter eggs. The children used water paints to create a beautiful picture of the Resurrection. We retold the story through role play. The winner of the raffle was Connor!

In English, the children have been writing their own non-fiction texts on farm animals. They have been using books and the Internet to find out facts and write them up. They have been learning the features of non-fiction texts and have included them in their writing. Can you find some non-fiction books at home?

In our phonics lessons we have been learning the different pronunciations for the letter a and the letter i.

In Maths, we have been solving multiplication problems using resources and drawing pictures. The children have been developing their reasoning skills through explanations.

In Science we learnt about the parts of a plant and created pictures to show each part.

Year 3 Summer 1: Week 1

This week, we focused on the Resurrection story according to Mark as well as post Resurrection stories such as The Road to Emmaus and Doubting Thomas. We also enjoyed hunting for our Easter egg tokens and displaying our Resurrection butterflies and looking for signs of new life.

We have started tennis in PE, focusing on the ready position, bounce rallies, forehand and backhand. We will be working with Mr Mills, from Potters Bar Tennis Club, later in the term.

As part of our D&T project, we interviewed Lisa in the kitchen, about healthy eating before making our own healthy sandwiches for sports day and evaluating them.

Summer 1 Week 1

It was lovely to welcome the children back this week. We have been learning about the resurrection story according to Mark and we compared it to Luke’s version. Today the children made beautiful butterflies for our class display to represent new life.

There was much excitement on Monday for our Easter egg hunt. Thank you to FOPPS for organising this.

In D&T, we  completed our CAM toys. They have come home to you this evening for you to look at and play with. The children worked incredibly hard and were so mature in using the equipment.

Have a wonderful weekend
