Dear Year 4,

We wish we could have met as usual this morning but until further notice myself and Mrs McNamara will use this platform to inform you about your daily learning. Please see the table below with activities for today.

If you have any questions to ask, please get in touch with us via our Year 4 email which is:

year4@popepaul.herts.sch.uk

Today it is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.  When you have a moment, please pray a decade of the rosary….an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be. We have been learning about the rosary in class and your special assembly on Friday will teach others all about this important prayer.

Ms Varga and Mrs McNamara

Spelling Please use the link below to practice our previous weeks’ spellings:

http://spellingframe.co.uk

So far we have covered Weeks 1, 2, 3, 4 and this week, we focused on these words (with further prefixes):

irresponsible, irrelevant, intercity, interact, international, interrelated, anticlockwise, antiseptic, antisocial, autobiography
autograph
Maths This week, we have been consolidating our understanding of rounding three and four digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Please try out this rounding card game  to help you apply your learning. Don’t forget, you can use our rounding mountains to determine benchmark numbers (e.g.: the ten before/the ten after/midway through).

rounding_cards_game- 7.10.2020

You can create your own set of cards using rounding to the nearest 1000, as an extension.

English This week, we launched our writing focus using the River Story by Meredith Hooper as the stimulus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoMXESuY8ss

We have retold the stages the river goes through in the first person, from the river’s point of view and we have also come up with a list of emotion words that they can use as fronted adverbials.

E.g.:

Scared and lonely, I began my journey as a tiny droplet of melted snow high up in the mountains.

Today for your English learning,  click on the YouTube link to read the story again and create a vocabulary bank for yourself.

Jot down any verbs to substitute ‘flow’ and any description words. Be prepared to use these words in context, when we start writing our own narrative.

Remember, a verb is a doing word.

For example:

Verb: bubbling, dripping,…

Description: shining, small, fast, …

RE In RE we have been looking at the 3 Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) as part of our RE learning.

We have looked at symbols, words and actions being used when celebrating these Sacraments.

We have discussed how these Sacraments are outward, visible signs of the invisible love and grace of God.

For your learning today, create an A4 piece of art around one of your chosen Sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist or Confirmation remembering the importance of the symbols you use to explain your chosen sacrament.

You can use any media: paint, crayon, pencil, etc…for this work.

For example: When we talk about the Eucharist, we think of the Bread and the Wine, the Body and Blood of Jesus. We also think about the Chalice and the Bread….you may wish to use these in your artwork.

Reception Class Week Beginning 28.9.20

What another busy week Reception have had!

The class started off the week by reading this week’s book, Stick Man by Julia Donaldson. Inspired by the story,  Reception then went for a walk, exploring the grounds in the search for Stick Man and his family. Sadly, they didn’t find him, but they did manage to collect lots of natural material to use in their learning back in the classroom. The children particularly loved the Peace Garden and took a moment to sit and just listen to the birds and all of the other sounds around them. Back in the classroom, the children enjoyed using their new natural resources to create their own stick people. They also had fun thinking up lots of different uses for Stick Man.

In RE, the children learnt about the Creation Story, and showed their understanding through role play and art.

This week has been  ‘Healthy Eating Week’ and Reception have played their part by promoting the ‘Drink Plenty’ aspect. They made a class collage, now framed and displayed in the dining hall and took part in an activity where they tried different flavoured water made from lemons, lime and mint. Lime infused water seemed to be the most popular, with many of the class asking for more!

Next week, Reception are starting the phonics program ‘Letters and Sounds’. Please look out for their phonics home learning book in book bags on Monday. This needs to be kept at home this year. We will be sending home a new phonics sheet every day except Friday. This will need to be stuck into their phonics book and completed daily, in order to reinforce the day’s new letter sound. Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Week 5

Another busy and fun week for Healthy Eating Week. We began heathy eating with tasting different fruit infused water to encourage us to drink more. The children enjoyed the different tastes and voted for their favourite. The most popular water in Year 1 was lemon and the least popular was plain water. The children enjoyed moving more this week, with ball games, running, dancing and karate. They designed a poster to encourage people to move more to keep healthy. We had lots of fun making pictures from the vegetables in our playground and the children took home charts to encourage them to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

Thank you for the photos of eating together and being active together. If you have not sent a photo in, please send it so we can add to our display.

We learnt about the importance of eating whole grains and then made wholemeal blueberry muffins. They were yummy!

In Maths we have been subitising, knowing the number of objects without counting. The children have been using this knowledge to help them to solve problems.

Our whole school topic for the next few weeks is rivers. We started by reading a book call A River. The children painted their favourite setting and wrote a caption for their painting. They have made lists of the animals that might have been found in the jungle. They learnt to use commas when writing a list. We also made some boats out of clay.

In Religion we have learnt about the signs, symbols and actions used in the Eucharist. The children enjoyed acting out the Eucharist. They remembered many of the words that the priest says during mass.

Year 4 has had the busiest of weeks so far participating in daily Healthy Eating activities as part of their Science learning.

They have looked at the health benefits of wholegrains and calculated the fibre content of different food items. They tasted wholegrain alternatives and also guessed the ingredients of different fruit and vegetable smoothies. They carried out a food survey, where they learned that the most disliked vegetable in Year 4 is broccoli, whilst the most liked one is carrot. They infused water with lemon, cucumber and mint and also looked at mindfulness and mental wellbeing.

The children had the opportunity to try karate on Wednesday, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

For the children who are celebrating their First Holy Communion  this weekend, we wish them every blessing as they grow closer to Jesus through receiving this Sacrament.

As part of this celebration we are asking for all the children to bring in a photograph of them from their First Holy Communion for a class display.

Next week, it is Year 4’s assembly on the Rosary, and this will be posted on the blog. Please encourage your child to learn their words for this.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

Ms Varga and Mrs McNamara

Year 6 – 02/10/20

This week has been Healthy Eating Week and so we have been looking at the different aspects of living healthily:

  • Eat More Wholegrains
  • Vary Your Veg
  • Drink Plenty
  • Move More
  • Be Mind Kind

Here are the Year 6s comparing fibre content in wholegrain vs non-wholegrain carbohydrates:

And here they are working different parts of the body to ensure that they ‘Move More’:

For Vary Your Veg, they taste-tested butternut squash and raw pepper with avocado. (For those asking for the butternut recipe, see the end of the blog)

Meanwhile, the school began ‘Karate Wednesdays’ and enjoyed their first session in martial arts:

For this week’s plant learning with Mrs McDonald, Year 6 were observing ways in which plants in the grounds were adapted for reproduction.

In Art, we began our topic on Impressionism. This week, the children focused on mixing and matching colours in Monet’s Japanese Bridge:

Today, St Vincent belatedly celebrated their saint’s feast day. Thank you and well done to Bella and Thomas – the St Vincent House Captains – for providing treats for the members of St Vincent house.

Well done on another brilliant week!

Week 5

This week is Healthy Eating Week and as part of our science learning we have investigated the importance of staying hydrated and tasted water infused with cucumber or lemon to encourage us to drink more – lemon was the most popular choice in Y3. We enjoyed moving and being active together this week, running, dancing, beat the teacher PE challenges  and karate and had lots of fun creating bar graphs that show which fruit and vegetables we have eaten each day. Now we understand that we should try to ‘eat a rainbow’ in order to stay healthy. We also celebrated kindness in the class and enjoyed some delicious banana bread made with whole grain flour.

In maths this week, we have been ordering and comparing numbers, while during fluency we have been balancing equations:

> means greater than.   56 > 45

< means less than. 45 < 56

= means the same as or equal to 4 + 2 = 5 + 1. This is also a balanced equation.

In English, we have written very exciting descriptive paragraphs about the character Stickman falling into a river! We have worked hard to include prepositions and interesting verbs to catch the readers attention. We will continue these stories next week.

Please look out for awards in the Newsletter!

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Pringle

Year 5 Assembly 2nd October 2020

Dear Parents,

Today Year 5 led the school in a wonderful assembly about St Francis.

Please watch the video below for the Year 5 Assembly and the presentation of this week’s Gold Awards and Head Teacher Awards.

Autumn 1 Week 5

It has been a busy week for Year 5!
Along with the rest of the school, we took part in Healthy Eating Week. We learnt about drinking more, varying our veg, being mind kind, being active and eating more whole grains. For the latter, we made some muffins and substituted a portion of the flour for whole grain. These lessons prompted a lot of interesting discussion around their food choices in general.
On Wednesday, we had our first karate session. It was fantastic try a different exercise.
We hope you enjoyed our first virtual assembly. It was strange not to be doing it in the hall with you all there but we are glad we still got to share it with you.
Have a wonderful weekend
