Autumn 1 Week 2

We have come to the end of our first full week of learning. The children have continued to settle and adjust to being back in school full time. We have started many of our new topics this week.
In science, we are learning about animals including humans. In Year 5, this means learning about life cycles and human growth. We started by investigating eggs and making scientific observations about them. Year 5 were able to pick out small details and learnt about each part of the egg.
In RE, we have been thinking about our mission prayer. The children searched through St Paul’s letters to find evidence of where we gain our key themes of care, respect, using our talents and believing we are all God’s work of art. We also thought about how we display these each day in school.
Multi skills is our current topic in PE. Today we learnt how to be more agile and improve our dodging technique. Please note that there is a change to our PE day. From now on, we will have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Home learning has been set today. The children have been given their home reading records and login details have been stuck inside. There are details for 3 different sites: readtheory.org, mathletics and  studyladder. This week, children should log in and complete the mathletics set and the initial assessment on readtheory. There has been no learning set on studyladder. Spellings for the half term will be given on Monday. The readtheory assessment is important to find the right level for the comprehensions your child will be given. Please let them complete this independently and reassure them not to worry if they find it difficult.

Week 2

Our first full week back at school in Year 3  has been a very busy one. We have welcomed Moini, Julia and Naomi to our class and pray for those who have left Pope Paul.

We have written interesting sentences using adjectives and questions in English and everyone is working hard on their handwriting and presentation.

In Maths, we have used  Dienes equipment, number fans, bead strings and written models to represent 2 and 3 digit numbers. We have also continued learning to count in 3s from 0.

During Science we have investigated what plants need to grow and why it is important to remove weeds.

Our chest and bounce passes have really improved this week in P.E. and we have played lots of different games to develop our running and dodging skills.

Home learning –  to be completed by next Wednesday please.

This evening I have sent home a blue folder containing your child’s passwords, a book list, a handwriting/spelling sheet and a copy of our cursive letter formation.

The spellings on the handwriting sheet are to be traced and then copied. The children will be tested on these words next Friday so please revise them at home and use this link to practice https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/22/19-Words-with-the-sound-spelt-ei-eigh-or-ey

I have set mathletics and would like your child to read for 10 – 15 minutes a daily. Please sign their reading record and return their books and records every Thursday. They may log onto read theory and complete one of the comprehension quizzes on there also, but this is optional.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Pringle

Week 2

What a busy week! The children have settled well and are following the routines in Year 1.

Thank you to Mark’s dad for making us a wonderful kitchen for our outdoor area.

In PE the children practised their throwing and catching skills.

In RE we looked at our mission prayer and discussed what each part means. The children strive to care and respect each and they shared their talents with the class.

In Maths the children used mathematical vocabulary to describe the position of different objects. We are beginning to learn left and right so please practise at home.

Our Author this month is Julia Donaldson. We read the story Monkey Puzzle. The children made story maps to retell the story and painted wonderful pictures of the animals. If you have any story by Julia Donaldson, please read them to your child.

We had great fun outdoors looking at the beautiful flowers and vegetables. The children did an observational drawing of a sunflower and labelled the different parts. We pulled and pulled the huge sunflower out of the soil and measured the height using different children. The sunflowers were two taller children or two and a half smaller children long.

Home Learning

The children received a folder with Year 1 common exception words,  phonics mats for Phase 2, 3 and 5 and their Mathletics password. We assessed the children this week and I have highlighted the sounds your child can read and write. Please practise the sounds your child does not know. The children have their new reading books. At this time of year we are consolidating their learning and building their confidence so they develop a love of reading. In the front of your child’s reading record I have highlighted the tricky words your child can read. Please practise reading the words not highlighted. If your child can read all of the tricky words, please practise spelling them. I have also included spellings for this term. We will test the children each Wednesday.  In Religion we are learning about how the church welcomes new members. If your child was baptised, please could you send a photo of their baptism that we can stick into their book. Write their name on the back of the photo.

Here are some songs to help your child to learn the tricky words.

11th September Whole School Assembly

Dear Parents,

This week has seen the children settle in to the new routines of school. It has also been lovely to welcome back children to our Breakfast Club and After School Club. This week our new reception children had the opportunity to visit the school and meet the Reception teaching team as well as enjoying a school dinner. We look forward to welcoming them next week as they start their Pope Paul journey. On Monday we welcomed Aram to Year 2, Moini to Year 3 and Samuel to Year 4. We hope that they will be very happy at our school.

This week, Niamh Bell, one of our past pupils, has been working with Years 5 and 6. Niamh is off to the University of Cambridge to study a PGCE in secondary teaching and so as part of this course spent time with us learning about the importance of primary education. We wish her well in her future career.

Today our year 6 class took part in a Leadership Reflection Workshop at OLASV. They joined the Parish Mass and then had the opportunity to reflect on the qualities of good leadership and to meet in their house groups to discuss what they would like to organise as part of our Year of Hope. Thank you to Father Shaun, Mrs Joyce, Miss Donatantonio and Mrs McDonald for supporting this event.

This week we held our virtual meet the teacher sessions which are available on the Class pages of our website. I hope you found the information useful; please let us know via email or phone if you have any queries regarding arrangements or procedures.

Enjoy the assembly below.

Welcome to Year 6

Welcome back!

It’s been a wonderful two days in the Year 6 classroom, with plenty of hard work, lots of smiles and a great deal of hand washing!

Our focus has been on launching the Year of Hope, which began with an Act of Worship yesterday morning in which the children buried their negative thoughts from lockdown and wrote their hopes for the year ahead on a butterfly. They followed this with writing beautiful poems about what hope is like to them. Today, we looked at a song, animation, short story and hymn; the children discussed and wrote about the messages of hope contained within them.

Please note that Year 6’s PE days will be Wednesdays and Fridays, starting from next week. Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed in their full PE kits on these days. Thank you.

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Donatantonio

Welcome to Year 5

Welcome back. It has been wonderful spending time getting to know your children over the past two days. They have all adjusted well to new routines and have loved seeing each other again at playtime. It has been a great pleasure seeing their smiles and how happy being together as a class has made them. This week, we have been busy learning about hope, our new school focus for this year. I was thoroughly uplifted by their explanations of where they find hope in their lives.

This year, children need to come to school wearing their PE kits. Year 5 PE days are Tuesday and Friday. This will start from next week. Year 5 have been fantastic at bringing in water bottles and pencil cases daily, thank you.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend

Mrs Lines
