Year 2 Blog Week 24

It has been another action-packed week for the Year 2 crew! This week was British Science Week and there was plenty of scientific enquiry and plenty of investigations in Year 2. We launched into the week with THE BIG QUESTION- What is the best biscuit for dunking? The children had great fun planning this investigation as well as testing the biscuits and recording the results. We all enjoyed a well earned biscuit after all of our careful testing and recording.

This week we were very lucky to have 2 special visitors in Year 2 – Caitlin and Lucy’s mum came in to talk to KS1 about nursing and working in a hospital. The children asked lots of great questions. It was a very enjoyable and informative talk.

We also had a visit from Mr Frielander from Dame Alice Owen’s science department. He came to teach us about biodiversity. Year 2 had great fun using pooters to trap insects for closer observation and classification. Wonderful specimens were found in the Peace Garden and vegetable beds.

Thank you to everyone who came to our celebration morning. I hope you enjoyed sharing all of our amazing science learning. We will keep you updated on the progress of the caterpillars.

Year 6 – 07/03/20

Today, the Fairtrade Group were very busy concluding this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight: they led an assembly, ran the Banana & Biscuit Sale, and ended the day being true ambassadors for the school by presenting to the Year 5s and 6s at Ladbrooke School, promoting the importance of supporting Fairtrade. It was a privilege to accompany them and watch them standing in front of other children, speaking so clearly and confidently.

In RE this week, Mrs McNamara worked with the children to write and record their own radio broadcasts promoting Fairtrade.

Also this week, the Biodiversity Team chose the winners of their ‘Animal Hotel Competition’ – well done to the team for organising this competition to support wildlife in our local area.

This week’s home learning (due Tuesday 10th March) is as follows:

Week 2: 6th March, 2020

This week has been busy with lots happening around us!  Lots of the children spent their time enjoying the cycling workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday.  They came back talking about all the interesting things they did with the cycling trainers.  Well done on to them on achieving their Level 1!  The Level 1 certificates will be awarded to them next week in assembly.  The children in the choir went out on Tuesday afternoon with Miss Donantantonio and enjoyed their afternoon of singing and meeting other children from other schools.

On Thursday, the children looked great for our World Book Day where they and myself came dressed as characters from the Bible.  We listened to Cardinal Vincent’s podcast too and learnt about his favourite story from the bible.

In Maths, the children have continued with their work on measures and fractions.   In our topic of fractions they have begun to learn about how to find a fraction of a quantity and how their times tables assists them in working these fractions out.   The children have also been introduced to another website that aids them in their understanding of timestables.

Home Learning:

  1.  A short 2 minute radio advertisement

Alongside the theme of persuasion and Fairtrade:

Create a script for a Christian radio advertisement about Fair Trade.  You need to persuade people that Fair Trade is important!  Ensure that you include references to Scripture and explain why this is relevant.

Ideas on references to scripture.  Think about:

Pope Paul VI:  ‘If you want peace, work for justice’

Mark 12:31 – The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”God’s commandment on Love:

Fair trade is a way for us to show Jesus’ love. It’s a way to live what we believe!

Pope Francis’ message on Laudate Si, caring for our common home, caring for others

2.  Practise your timetables using the links above as an aid.

Spring 2 Week 2

Another busy week has flown by in Year 5. On Tuesday we visited the Houses of Parliament. Our tour began by taking the queen’s entrance and looking around the robing room, where Queen Victoria’s throne still sits. We were then able to make our way to the House of Lords. Once inside, we could see the ornate, gold decoration. It was a wonderful experience for the children and adults alike. After our tour had concluded, we took part in a workshop where we explored votes for women and how suffragettes brought about change. It was an absolute privilege to take Year 5 on this trip. Not only was their behaviour impeccable during the journey, tour and workshop, they proved themselves to be highly knowledgeable about parliament. A tour guide complimented Year 5 and said that she was very impressed with their questions and comments. Well done, Year 5, and thank you to our adult helpers. Many of our Year 5s then had to rush off from the station on our return that day to take part in a chess tournament. They represented us well and achieved silver and bronze. All in all, it was a very busy but successful day.

On Thursday it was World Book day. There were a fabulous assortment of bible characters and I enjoyed hearing about who the children had chosen to come as and why.

All through this week, some of Year 5 took part in bikeability. This was a fantastic experience for them to learn new skills and how to ride on the road safely. Thankfully the weather improved today as they had endured some downpours during their sessions throughout the week.

Next week is science week. I am looking forward to seeing Year 5 use their scientific skills to take part in a whole school investigation. During science today, they impressed me with their observation skills as we looked at eggs. See if they can tell you about the different parts of the egg and how and why we are able to tell if they have gone bad.

Have a peaceful weekend

Reception Spring Term 2 Week 2

Reception started the week by asking themselves the question,

‘How can we look after our planet?’

The children have learnt about food, water, material and energy waste and ways to cut pollution. They also learnt to identify the recycling logo on packaging and sorted rubbish into different groups according to their material.

Reception have also continued to learn about the importance of Fairtrade and have been busy designing their own Fairtrade promotional posters.

On Thursday, Pope Paul school celebrated World Book Day. The children looked fantastic in their costumes and enjoyed sharing the stories about their chosen characters from the Bible.

Next week, the children are looking forward to taking part in ‘Science Week’ alongside the rest of the school.

Today we said goodbye to our wonderful student Mia. She has been a great asset to the Reception team and we will all miss her!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer

Year 2 Blog Week 23

The children brought their favourite Bible characters to life this week as we celebrated World Book Day and The Year of the Word.  All of the costumes were brilliant and Year 2 proudly showed off their costumes at a whole school assembly.  After assembly we had great fun discussing our favourite stories and authors. It was wonderful to hear the children talking about books and reading with such enthusiasm.

This week the children put their science hats on and looked at different materials and their properties. We know that some materials are chosen for specific uses based on their properties. Plastic can be thin and transparent or thick and opaque.  The children investigated the flexibility of different plastic bottles. The results were very interesting.

In other news… we received a very special parcel in the post… A beautiful butterfly growing kit. We prepared the butterfly larvae and we are looking forward to observing the changes over the next few weeks.

Spring 2 Week 2

The children looked amazing as their favourite Bible story characters! They enjoyed telling the class about their favourite stories. We also read our favourite story books!

In Maths we have been naming and describing 3D shapes. We made shapes with lego, blocks and sticks. Please identify real life objects and their shapes at home.

In English we have continued with The Tin Forest. We have made some lovely animals and  trees for our corridor display.

In Science we put some caterpillars into some special caterpillar food and we will observe the changes over the next few weeks. The children are very excited about them turning into butterflies.

Spring 2 Week1

We hope you all enjoyed your half term break!

It was lovely to see you all at the Parent Consultation evenings this week. Mrs Gymer and I were delighted to hear how much your children are enjoying the learning opportunities here at Pope Paul School! We also had a fantastic response to how parents feel about Tapestry. Thank you to all the parents who frequently upload photos/ observations of their child’s experiences at home! They really do help us when it comes to assessing how well your child is developing.

This week saw the start of the whole school English book focus- The Tin Forest. The children have been very busy writing about different themes from the story, thinking about their own hopes and wishes for the future, learning about rainforests and making their own tin art.

On Wednesday, Reception took part in the KS1 Ash Wednesday service, where they received ashes. As usual, they made their teachers proud with their reverent behaviour and beautiful singing.

On Friday, Reception joined the rest of the school in the special Lenten assembly where their Lenten promises became part of the whole school display.

Next week, we will be continuing our learning focus on themes from The Tin Forest, looking closely at ways in which we can help protect our planet.

Enjoy your week,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer
