Spring 1, Week 6.

We visited the Jamia Mosque in Watford this week as part of our Other Faith week. While there we learnt many things about the Islamic faith; including how they prepare for prayer, how many times they pray a day and why they face Mecca when they pray. The children were very respectful on our visit and asked many interesting questions.

We have been busy in our class garden too; weeding and planting many bulbs. The children once again proved themselves to be responsible and displayed great team work when clearing the beds.

As part of E-Safety day, we read Troll Stinks, which is all about cyberbullying. We also wrote and created music on the i-pads for raps all about how to safe stay online.

Home learning:

As part of our Tin Forest writing project, a whole school home learning has been set – please check the newsletter for details.

Please continue to read daily and record what has been read in reading records – the children can record their reading too. Please discuss and practice your child’s new targets with them over the holidays.

Have a restful half term holiday,

Miss Pringle

Year 2 Blog Week 21

It has been another busy week in Year 2. On Monday we were unfortunately unable to visit the Jain Temple as a fallen tree was blocking the road. This trip will be rescheduled for next term. Year 2 attended a Judaism workshop as part of our Other Faiths Week 2020. The children learnt all about the Feast of Passover and why Jewish people eat Matzah bread for their Seder meal.

This week we started to plant up our allotment beds with our potatoes, onions and garlic. We look forward to seeing the signs of new life and growth next term.

On Tuesday we celebrated Safer Internet Day 2020 – Together for a better Internet. The children explored E-safety and Cyberbullying through a wonderful tale – ‘Troll Stinks’ by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross. Year 2 identified all the things the Billy Goats did wrong with the mobile phone they found. Most importantly the children identified what Baby Troll should have done when she received the nasty messages… Block, Tell and Eject!

No Spelling Home Learning!!!

Well done Year 2 for all your hard work this term!

Please see the Newsletter for the Whole School Home Learning on The Tin Forest.

Have a fun-filled mid-term break!

Week 6

This week we have been doubling and halving. Please practise all the doubles and halves to 10.

In Science we predicted what would happen to different foods when they were heated. Then we tested them to see if our predictions were correct. We were also given a task to help Cinderella find the most absorbent paper to clean the floor. After careful observations we found that kitchen roll was more absorbent than paper or blue hand towels.

In English the children wrote wonderful poems and performed them to the class. We have amazing poets in the class!

As part of Other Faith Week we took part in a workshop about Judaism. The children learnt about many of the Jewish traditions.

Last Friday we made clay leaves. We had great fun!

We had great fun at the Valentine’s Disco!

Have a lovely holiday.

Year 2 Blog Week 20

This week the children completed their imaginative stories in English. Everyone thought very carefully about the story language they would use as well as all of the verbs, adjectives and adverbs. There are definitely some future authors in our midst.

This week in Maths we have been focusing on subtraction and using our strategy of drawing numberlines to count back. 57 – 30 = ?

This week we made the most of the glorious sunshine and we put our wellies on and tended to our class garden and allotment beds. It was hard, tiring work but the signs of new life and the beauty of nature made it all worth while. We are looking forward to planting our potatoes, onions and elephant garlic next week!

Home Learning:

Reception- Spring Term Week 5

What a busy week Reception have had!

On Monday the children joined the rest of the children celebrating Candlemas. This was followed by RE in the afternoon, when the children learnt about how God is with us when we are being fair. They had lots of fun in the hall playing turn-taking games.

On Wednesday, the class had a drama workshop, where they travelled around the world singing and dancing in different countries.

The story focus this week has been ‘The Ugly Duckling’. The children were challenged to make something that could fly independently, like the swan at the end of the story. There was lots of excitement on the playground as the children tested their models!

Reception also began preparations for their first ever class assembly, to be held next Friday at 9.15am in the school hall.

The class finished the week with a very special Act of Worship led by Year 6. As usual, the children were reverent and reflective in their prayer.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer

Week 5: February 7th

On Monday, the whole school celebrated the Feast of Candlemas and the children showed great reverence.

In English, the children have been busy continuing their writing work on our class book ‘Leon and the place between’ and developing their use of conjunctions, adjectives and prepositions within their writing.

In Maths they were introduced to the use of another tool to aid their understanding – a place value slider and have used this to help them multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.  Some even explored this with decimal numbers!

Please ask your child how they use this tool to help them.

We continue to practise our times tables and ask that you continue to encourage your child to practise at home as well.

On Wednesday, Deacon Axel visited our class and did an act of worship focusing on this week’s gospel on light and dark.  The children participated well in the discussion and followed the importance of making sure that they show their light (talent) and not hide them.

On Friday afternoon, the children had PE with Coach Dugan and enjoyed the team games that he introduced to them using the outdoor environment.  He and Miss Pringle hid the names of twelve train stations that the children had to find in a particular order solving maths questions about passengers at the stations – they worked really well together.

Spring 1 Week 5

The mystery has been solved! Year 5 have discovered the whereabouts of the missing child from our class text, ‘The London Eye Mystery’. The children have now set to work on creating their own chapter of the rescue, filled with suspense and tension. In maths, we have completed our learning on mental addition and subtraction. The children enjoyed learning about ‘equal sum’ and ‘equal difference’ in order to calculate mentally.

Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about David Hockney in art. To do this, we spent time understanding colours and their relationship to each other before identifying how Hockney uses them to create striking masterpieces. We have also improved our painting skills by looking at tints, tones and shade. Today we went out into the playground to make sketches of our school landscape, which we will paint next week in the style of Hockney.

Next week we will be creating our class garden. Each class is creating an area to attract a specific animal. Year 5’s garden will be a haven for woodlice. Please donate anything you can to fill our space. We will need logs, bark and pots for the woodlice to hide under. The children could also decorate pebbles and rocks with images of woodlice and it would be wonderful to liven it up with a few plants around the edge to give some colour.

Have a wonderful weekend

Spring 1, Week 5.

Our week started with the celebration of Candlemass – it was wonderful that so many friends and family were able to join us for this special Mass.

We have been joined by 6 new class members this week; Goldie, Finley, Sir Finn, Speedy, Chips and Frank our fresh water (platy) fish. The children have proved to be very responsible pet owners; researching how to care for the fish and taking turns to feed them. Thank you Oskar for the donation of the deep sea diving duck!

In geography we have learnt about tectonic plates and their movements – we even created models of the earth to show how plate boundaries connect.

During science we have investigated how and why shadows change shape and size of shadows. We discovered that the lower the light source the longer the shadow!

In PE we have been working on our team work and problem solving skills. Mr Dugan and I hid the names of 12 train stations that the children had to find in a particular order and solve maths questions about passengers at the stations – they worked very well together and showed great resilience.
