Autumn 2, week 6

I would like to start by saying very well done to all the children for their wonderful singing, reading and acting at the KS2 Advent Service on Tuesday. You were a credit to the school and Parish.

I would also like to say thank you for your generous donations to our class hamper for Caritas Charity.

We have written synonym poems in English and worked on our timetable recall this week in maths.

During RE we have compared the differences, similarities and the common theme of Luke and Matthew’s account of Jesus’ birth. I have challenged the children to check their Christmas cards and see which account they depict.

Home Learning:

Spelling –

believe, appear, often, group, breath, continue, arrive, women, describe, height.

These are tricky words that don’t have a rule. To help you remember them try and think of any little rhymes or words within words that will help you to remember these spellings. For example appear has the word ear in it;  appear and height has the word eight in it; height.

Reading –  read for 10 minutes each day and sign reading records. Please return library books next week in order to choose a book to take home for the Christmas holiday’s. Our class author after Christmas is Michael Morpurgo.

Mathletics – has been set. Please also log onto hit the button and practise multiplication and division facts.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Pringle

Year 2 Blog Week 14

I’m Gonna Shine!

It has been a joyous week in school. It was lights, camera and action for our KS 1 Christmas Nativity. Gloria, the brightest star in all of heaven, took centre stage on a tricky journey to Bethlehem as she lit the way for the three wise men. As Mary, Joseph and the shepherds also made the long journey, we met Gabriel, the other angels and an angry King Herod.  Happily Mary and Joseph reached Bethlehem safely and we celebrated the birth of baby Jesus. Year 2 along with Year 1, acted, sang and danced brilliantly and they should all be very proud of themselves. Thank you to everyone for attending and for your generous donations to The Passage.

Have a peaceful weekend,

Miss Davey

Week 13: December 13th

This week the children prepared for the Advent Service and it was a delight to watch them retell the story of Abraham in word, drama, song and dance.  Well done to all the children on performing so well on Tuesday night.

As part of our RE lessons this week, the children have continued to learn more about the Jesse Tree.  The Jesse Tree is a kind of Advent Calendar. Each day through advent we have been examining a special decoration that tells a story from the Bible and its symbol is hung on the tree. We have also examined the message behind the story of Abraham and the children wrote their own prayers about trusting in God like Abraham.

This week the class watched many of their peers entertain them through their music playing and singing at the Music Concert on Monday afternoon.  Well done to Alice, James, Mia, Aidan, Sandro, Jack, Lottie, William P, William G, Phoebe, Mishka and Ellie who performed so well.

On Tuesday the class watched the KS1 Nativity – the KS1 children worked so hard to remember their lines and all the words to the songs. It was great fun all round and they did themselves very proud. Year 4 really enjoyed watching it just as much as the children enjoyed performing!

On Friday, the choir members went off to sing in the afternoon and those children left back in class were given the task to solve the Christmas Pudding Conundrum!  The children worked really well with their partner to solve the five difficult clues.

Another piece of Good News for the class – Ms Varga had a baby girl on Wednesday morning!  We were all delighted to hear that Baby Anna had arrived.

Thank you to the parents who have already sent in their donation for our Advent Giving Calendar.  Please send in your donation so that we can create a hamper of goodies to donate to the St Vincent de Paul Society to be distributed in our local area.

Homework has been set on Mathletics and Spag.com.

Have a lovely weekend.

Autumn 2 Week 6

This week saw Year 5 join years 3, 4 and 6 in creating a beautiful Advent service. It is always a highlight of my year and this one did not disappoint! I was so proud of their retelling of the story of Joseph and his colourful coat. Well done, Year 5.

On Wednesday, we were visited by the Diocese for our Religious Education inspection. Thank you to all parents for your amazing support. The children did a wonderful job and I am looking forward to reading the full report when it comes out.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our reverse Advent calendar so far. It is getting bigger everyday! Keep it coming next week!

Have a wonderful weekend

Week 6

A Dazzling Nativity! The children were amazing in the nativity this week. They danced and sang beautifully. Thank you to all of the parents for their support with learning the songs and for the costumes.

In Religion we have been learning Matthew’s Story of the Birth of Jesus. The children were able to role play the story and write a recount. We talked about the joy that Jesus bought to Mary, Joseph and us then we thought of ways we can bring joy to others.

Week 12: 6th December, 2019

Year 4 Class Trip to StAlbans

Arriving at St Albans Cathedral

Inside the Cathedral

St Albans Shrine

The Artefact Handling Session

The Roman Wall in Verulamium Park

Sandro and Lily (Flavia) dressed in a tunic and Freddie in a toga.

On Monday Year 4 visited St Albans by coach.  St Albans Cathedral is a great place to visit!  It has the longest nave in England, 85 metres long.  The history of St Albans Cathedral is rich and, over the centuries, this magnificent building has undergone several transformations.

As we stepped inside we found awe inspiring reminders of the Cathedral’s past.  We sat on the high altar admiring the beautiful sculpures  and noticed that the pulpit with a wooden carved eagle and the place where the choristers stand and sing.  We visited the Shrine of St Alban and were told about the shrine being destroyed by King Henry VIII.  St Alban was Britain’s first saint.

The Roman Wall of St Albans, which was built between AD 265 and 270 to defend the Roman city of Verulamium, can still be traced for most of its two-mile circuit. When it was built, the massive structure towered at a height of five metres protecting the fine city.  We had fun running up and down examining the wall and spotting the several layers of terracotta tiles.

We walked onto the Verulamium Museum which is filled with ancient treasures and some of the finest mosaics.  We enjoyed exploring the many interesting displays and artefacts and we participated in an artefact handling session.

We had a great day out!

This week we have also been thinking about good ways to prepare for Christmas. We’ve thought about what Christmas means and what we need to do to get ready. The children have prayed with reverence.

This Advent we, as a school, are supporting the:

Caritas Food Collective – Building Communities and Improving Lives.

Your child has been given a number (register number) and the item attached to that is what we ask for you to donate.  The children who are numbers 25 – 30 in the register have been asked to choose any star on the Advent Giving Calendar and donate their item to this appeal. Bring your star product into school next week to fill our class hamper. Thank you so much for your continued support and generosity.

Homework this week is:

  1.  prepare your costume for the Advent Service on Tuesday evening.
  2. Learn the words for the service (2 sheets have been sent home with your child).
  3. click on the link below to learn our class song:                                  Somewhere Out There
  4. The stars need to learn their dance:  Star Dance
  5. Children to bring into school an item for our class hamper in support of the Caritas Food Collective – Building Communities and Improving Lives.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Reception Class- Autumn 2 Week 5

It’s been a very busy week rehearsing for next week’s Nativity performance. Thank you for providing your children with their base layers. Reception had a full dress rehearsal on Thursday, in front of Year One, Year Six and their siblings and they did really well. The children are now really looking forward to performing for you on Tuesday morning!

This week, the class have continued to explore and become familiar with Advent. They have been learning about the symbolism of the Advent wreath and the meaning of each candle. The children went on to create a large class wreath and made observational drawings of the school Advent wreath.

The whole school have been invited to enter a national art competition.  They were asked to create paintings about the Nativity. Here are some of our outstanding entries!

Finally, this afternoon we had two special visitors- Mrs Conyers and Mrs Turner from St John’s Nursery popped in to say hello to Reception. They were delighted by the children’s singing and acting, as they rehearsed the final part of the Nativity.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer

Year 2 Blog Week 13

What a lovely week of learning! Year 2 have been thinking very carefully about the Nativity story and looking at the differences between Matthew’s and Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus. The children created some beautiful nativity scenes in Art. We continued our work on portraits and we focused on the faces of the visitors to the stable.

Our Author of the Month for December is the wonderful Julia Donaldson. Her rhyme is sublime! We particularly enjoyed the tale of Superworm. In Science the children investigated different habitats in our school gardens and observed the humble earthworm. It was a wriggly good time!

Well done to all the performers in the KS1 music concert. What talent!

This Advent we are supporting the Caritas Food Collective – Building Communities and Improving Lives. Please support by choosing any star on our Advent Giving Calendar and donating to this appeal. Bring your star product into school next week to fill our class hamper. Thank you.

I look forward to seeing all you on Wednesday 11th December at 9:30 a.m. for the big show!

Have a peaceful weekend.

KS2 Advent Service words and links

Come to us, oh Emmanuel

When is he coming?

When is he coming, when, oh when is he coming, the Redeemer?

When will we see him, when, oh when will we see him, the Redeemer?

Come, oh come, from your kingdom up there, from your kingdom up there above!
Come, oh come, to your people on earth, to your people on earth bring love!
Emmanuel! Emmanuel! Emmanuel!

Long years a-waiting, Many years here a-waiting the Redeemer!
Ready to greet him, always ready to meet him, the Redeemer!

Come, oh come, from your kingdom up there, from your kingdom up there above!
Come, oh come, to your people on earth, to your people on earth bring love!
Emmanuel! Emmanuel! Emmanuel!

Think of a world without any flowers

Think of a world without any flowers, think of a world without any trees.

Think of a sky without any sunshine, think of the air without any breeze.

We thank you, Lord, for flowers and trees and sunshine

We thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name.

Think of the world without any animals, think of a field without any herd.

Think of a stream without any fishes, think of a dawn without any bird.

We thank you, Lord, for all your living creatures,

We thank you, Lord, and praise your holy name.

Somewhere out there

Somewhere out there, beneath the pale blue light

Someone’s thinking of me and loving me tonight.

Somewhere out there, someone’s saying a prayer

That we’ll find one another in that big somewhere out there.

And even though I know how very far apart we are

It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star.

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby

It helps to think we’re sleeping underneath the same big sky.

Somewhere out there, if love can see us through.

Then we’ll be together somewhere out there

Out where dreams come true.

The Angel, Gabriel

The angel Gabriel from heaven came. His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame. All hail said he thou lowly maiden Mary, most highly favoured lady. Gloria.

For known a blessed mother thou shalt be. All generations laud and honour thee. Thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold Most highly favoured lady. Gloria.

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head. To me be, as it pleaseth God, she said.  My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name. Most highly favoured lady. Gloria.

Joseph’s Coat

Joseph, he was Jacob’s favourite son. Of all the family Joseph was the special one. So Jacob bought his son a coat a multi-coloured coat to wear.

Joseph’s coat was elegant, the cut was fine. The tasteful style was the ultimate in good design. And this is why it caught the eye; a king would stop and stare. And when Joseph tried it on he knew his sheepskin days were gone.

Such a dazzling coat of many colours; how he loved his coat of many colours.
In a class above the rest it even went well with his vest.
Such a stunning coat of many colours; how he loved his coat of many colours.
It was red and yellow and green and brown and blue.

Joseph’s brothers weren’t too pleased with what they saw
they had never liked him all that much before
And now this coat had got their goat
They felt life was unfair. And when Joseph graced the scene, his brothers turned a shade of green.

His astounding clothing took the biscuit quite the smoothest person in the district. He looked  handsome, he looked smart, he was a walking work of art.
Such a dazzling coat of many colours; how he loved his coat of many colours.

It was red and yellow and green and brown and scarlet and black and ochre and peach
And ruby and olive and violet and fawn And lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve
And cream and crimson and silver and rose And azure and lemon and russet and grey
And purple and white and pink and orange and blue.

This Promise Is For You

When God blessed Abraham, the covenant promise began. By faith he was chosen from all of creation. This promise is for you.

And the lips of prophets foretold. How god’s promise of love would unfold.
A powerful vision of Justice and freedom. This promise is for you

Then came the final sign in the Lord’s most favoured time
A King, God’s Son, the Holy one. This promise is for you

Come Holy Spirit, send your gifts, inspire our hearts, Come Holy Spirit, lead us to the fullness of life. The promise fulfilled in Jesus Christ

And the child Mary held in her womb, by the wood of the cross and the tomb
Has died and is risen, our sins are forgiven. This promise is for you.

So what do we choose to do? Where do we choose to go?
Only in Christ is the fullness of life. This promise is for you.

Magnificat

My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices
My God forever he will be, bless his holy name.
