Year 6 Parents Workshop

Reception- Autumn Term Week 5

It’s been another very busy week in Reception!

We started the week off by reading the book ‘Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor’ alongside the rest of the school. This proved to be a real hit with the children and shaped the learning that followed for the rest of the week.

Joan knew that she wanted to be a scientist from a very young age and that got the children thinking about what they would like to be when they are grown up. There was a lot of interest and excitement during discussion about this particular topic! Each child then painted a beautiful portrait of their future self which will be available for all to see during the celebration morning in a couple of week’s time.

Reception class were also very keen to have a vets role play, so that they could look after the animals, just like Joan Procter. This proved to be an extremely popular learning area and so the children decided to start a register, so that every one got a turn. What a great way to practise writing names!

On Tuesday, the class had lots of fun participating in a skipping workshop. It is a very tricky skill to master, however there were a lots of examples of children using their learning power- having a go and not giving up! Lots of children then applied this new skill during Child Initiated Learning throughout the rest of the week.

In RE this week, Reception have been learning about what it takes to be a ‘Steward of the Earth’ and ways that they can help God’s creation. The adults around the school were so impressed with their ideas!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer

Week 5 October 4th, 2019

With many things happening this week, the children have been kept busy busy!

One of the highlights for the class this week has been their class assembly and the reptile and skipping workshops. In English we are studying a non-fiction text: ‘Joan Procter, The Dragon Doctor’ – the woman who loved reptiles by Patricia Valdez and in Maths we have begun our work on rounding.  In RE we have continued to look at the importance of stewardship, discussing what Pope Francis has asked us to do – to care for our common home. This linked well with our assembly on St Francis.

Each of the children spoke in the assembly and I was very proud to hear them speak in front of an audience.  They retold the story of St Francis well.  Well done!  They were very excited to have their family and friends at the assembly also…thank you for your continued support.

On Wednesday Richard came from the Reptile Workshop and the children thoroughly enjoyed this experience.  At first some of them were slightly apprehensive but over the session, they engaged and thoroughly enjoyed themselves!  Hope that you enjoy the photos.

Homework has been set:  Mathletics , Spag.com (direct speech) and spellings.

Spellings for this week are:

cereal, serial, by, buy, flower, flour, great, grate, reign, rain

Focus is homophones.

Autumn 1, Week 5

This week has been action packed. We started the week with a skipping workshop, where we learnt difficult individual and paired skipping techniques. The playground has been full of ropes this week – don’t forget to bring your ropes in next week.

Later in the week we were visited by a reptile roadshow, where we met and learnt about different snakes, lizards and bearded dragons. This really brought our class book, Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor to life. Did you know that reptiles smell with their tongues and that snakes have hundreds of ribs!?

In science this week we have been testing the permeability of rocks. The children made careful observations and recorded their findings.

Your RE home learning was wonderful, well done. I have enjoyed learning which Bible stories are the children’s favourites. We have started to learn about Psalms this week.

Year 2 Blog Week 4

This week in school we launched The Year of The Word – The God Who Speaks. In Year 2 we found out about St. Jerome and how he translated the Bible into Latin, a language that ordinary people could understand. We reflected on how St. Paul VI helped to spread the Good News and the children created a beautiful collage of our patron saint for our classroom.

In English we have been focusing on the book Joan Procter, The Dragon Doctor, as part of our whole school writing project. We concentrated on one of Joan’s most interesting reptiles, the Komodo dragon and everyone thought of fantastic adjectives to describe it. Hopefully we will catch a glimpse of the Komodo dragons in London Zoo next week.

Our author for the month of October is the very famous Children’s Laureate, Sir Michael Morpurgo. We whizzed through Fox Friend and we are looking forward to reading This Morning I Met a Whale.

In Maths, we have continued work on Place Value. The children have solved problems using the maths resources as well as drawing pictorial representation.

Home Learning: Spelling rule 3 and Mathletics.

If you have any small cardboard boxes at home in your recycling … please send them in for an art activity next week. (No bigger than a cereal box)

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Davey

Autumn 1 Week 5

This week, Year 5 began our new text ‘Joan Procter, Dragon Doctor’, along with the rest of the school. Our final outcome will be to write an autobiography about her. This week for home learning, I have asked the children to research her life so that they have the information they need for writing next week. This should consist of notes about her early life and information about her roles at London Zoo and the Natural History Museum.

To understand Joan more, we took part in a reptile workshop today. I hope you enjoy the pictures! We had a great time.

have a great weekend

Year 6 – 04/10/19

This week has been action-packed, including yesterday’s WW2-themed trip to the British Schools Museum in Hitchin. Thank you for the fantastic efforts with all the children’s costumes and props; they looked superb! Have a look at what we got up to:

This morning we were lucky enough to be visited by Richard’s Reptile Roadshow, to link to our whole-school English writing focus on Joan Procter the scientist. There were feelings of fear, achievement, surprise and overall great excitement as Richard brought around snakes, lizards, a cockroach, a tortoise and even a chichilla to hold, and we learnt so many interesting facts about the animals’ adaptations for survival. Thank you to Miss Pringle for arranging this fantastic learning opportunity!

This week’s home learning (due Tuesday 8th October ) is as follows:

English Spag.com à Semi-colons & colons (A) and Linking ideas & cohesion (A)
