Autumn 1, Week 6

Firstly, I would like to congratulate all of Y3 on leading the assembly this morning about the extraordinary month of mission, you were fantastic!

They have worked very hard this week to master rounding and estimating 2 digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 in maths. Next week we will be focusing on counting in 3s.

In English, the children have also been busy writing their final non-chronological reports about Joan Procter, well done, they are brilliant.

In art we have created Autumnal collages and used water colours to paint snakes.

During One World Week (next week) we are focusing on India – a whole school email has been sent out regarding this – if you have any pictures, artifacts or books about this country that your child might like to share please bring them in on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Home Learning:

Autmn 1 Week 7

In English this week, we completed our biographies and have begun to edit them. I was really impressed by the quality of their writing. In maths, we have been looking at decimal numbers and understanding the link between fractions and decimals. In science, we have been thinking about the movement of the moon. Year 5 learnt about the different phases of the moon and know that we are currently seeing a waning moon. Each evening, see if you can spot it the sky as we move towards the new moon in the half term. We also looked at the movement of the earth and discussed why we have seasons.

Our history learning combined with our RE this week as we discovered how Christianity came to England during the time of the Anglo Saxons. We evaluated the evidence explained reasons for its increases and decreases.

Next week is One World Week. We will be studying Brazil, and in particular the amazon. Home learning is to complete a task based on Brazil. It can be a poster, piece of art or a fact file. I look forward to seeing what the children make.

Year 6 – 18/10/19

In history this week, we learnt more about life on the Home Front. The children experienced the air raid siren going off then learnt about the necessity of rationing food. They wrote diary entries about their reactions to rationing, compared propaganda posters, then made their own.

In science, we were learning about the smallest living things on earth: microorganisms. The children came up with their own questions about what factors might affect mould growth, then set up their own investigations with bread that will enable them to find out the answers after a week or two. Here are some of the questions that are being investigated:

  • Does mould grow better in the light or in the dark?
  • Does moisture cause mould to grow more?
  • Does mould prefer to grow in hot or cold conditions?

PE this week focused on basic hockey skills. The children learnt that they must keep their knees soft, keep the ball in front of them, use only the flat side of the stick and keep the stick touching the floor. They worked on changing direction with the ball and stopping a ball that is coming towards them.

This week’s art learning was using collage to create self-portraits. They will finish these off next week.

And finally, here are this week’s photos of some of the Year 6s with their reading partners:

Next week, Year 6 will be learning about Poland for One World Week, so check the blog next Friday to see the creative learning they will have produced!

The main part of this week’s home learning is to research Poland and to show this learning creatively. In addition to this, there are the following spellings to learn:

co-operate

co-ordinate

co-own

co-author

re-enter

re-educate

re-examine

re-evaluate

re-energise

re-elect

Week 7

Another great week of learning! In Literacy we wrote a newspaper report on the opening of Joan Proctor’s Reptile House. The children would make great news reporters.

In Maths we have been using number lines to count on. The children have also been solving problems and explaining what their methods.

In Religion we learnt Psalm 1 about how we listen to God and when we behave well we are happy and make God happy. The children sang the Psalm and made up dances.

In our PE lesson the children made their own games and explained the game to the class. They gave wonderful instructions so everyone could try their new game.

Whole School Home Learning- To research Australia and make posters or artwork about the country.

Have a good weekend!

Reception Autumn Term Week 6

Reception had a very exciting start to the week when they were visited by Jamie’s mum and her collection of reptiles! As well as learning lots  of facts about each one, the children were invited to handle them too. We certainly have lots of brave children in our class!

On Tuesday, the children were visited by a road safety officer who explained that before crossing a road, we must stop, look, listen and think!

In RE, Reception continued to explore the act of being stewards of the earth. They talked about how beautiful creation is and how important it is to take care of it. They then went on a walk around the school grounds, collecting natural materials that God created. When they got back to class, they worked in groups to create their own works of art.

Next week, Reception will be thinking about when they were babies and how much they have grown. If possible, please provide your child with a baby photograph. These will be returned to you in due course.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Mrs Theo and Mrs Gymer

Year 6 – 11/10/19

This afternoon in art, the class used coloured ink to paint onto their line self-portraits from a fortnight ago. Have a look at the resemblances below!

In music, the children tried their hand at conducting the rest of the class, focusing on bringing groups in and controlling the dynamics (loud or soft).

In this week’s PE lesson, the focus in football training was on communicating and problem solving together.

This morning, the Sports Captains assisted a local councillor in officially opening the brand new climbing frame; everyone’s looking forward to challenging themselves on it next week!

The House Captains this week had the important job of participating in the Walk-to-School Audit. They walked around the local area and made recommendations about how road safety could be improved.

The Healthy Living Team have been busy running obstacle courses for the KS1 children this week to encourage improving fitness; well done for organising this and for giving up your break times to run it.

Furthermore, the Liturgy Leaders have been leading the Rosary each lunchtime. It is fantastic to see the Year 6s so committed to their leadership roles.

Finally, the week ended with the Year 6s spending time with their learning partners:

Week 6: 11th October

This week in Year 4 we have continued with our focus on Joan Procter the Dragon Doctor.  The children have examined and researched about her life as they will be writing their own Non-Chronological Report about Joan next week.  In grammar, they have been working on understanding the use of factual adjectives and fronted adverbials which they will use in their writing also.

In Maths, we are continuing with the work on rounding to the nearest 10/100/1000.

In Science, the children have continued with their work on investigating sound using balloons, tuning forks, metre sticks and tennis balls!

In History, the children did a role play activity on Emperor Claudius to find out why he decided to leave sunny Italy and invade cold, wet Britain!  They were to act as advisers to Claudius and convince him to invade. Mrs Heymoz was  in the hot seat as Emperor Claudius and was delighted by their reasons for invasion.

This afternoon, the children took turns to use our new climbing frame and it went down a treat!  Thank you to FOPPS and all parents who have helped in raising money through the various events during the year.  It will be an added bonus to our play times.

Home Learning is:

Mathletics (Rounding) and SPAG (Fronted Adverbials).

The children will be having their spelling test on Monday on the following words:

buy, by, reign, rain, flour, flower, great, grate, cereal, serial.

Have a lovely weekend.

Autumn 1 Week 6

We have continued our Joan Proctor learning this week and our biographies are beginning to take shape. On Tuesday, we visited London Zoo which gave us a real insight into Joan’s work to inform our writing. It was wonderful to see how she is still remembered there and to have the chance to visit the Komodo dragon enclosure. Whilst there, we took part in a workshop about the rainforest. This will support us in our upcoming geography learning about the Amazon.

The new climbing frame was opened today and Year 5 had a chance to explore it during Golden Time. They are looking forward to using it every Tuesday lunchtime.

This week, home learning has been set on spag.com and Mathletics. Children are also required to complete at least 5 tests on readtheory.org.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Lines.

Year 2 Blog Week 5

We’re going to the zoo, zoo, zoo!

It has been a wonderful week filled with amazing learning experiences for the children. The highlight of our week was our trip to London Zoo. The children delighted in visiting the Reptile House and seeing the legacy of Joan Procter’s incredible work. There were plenty of amazing animals to see! The Komodo dragon was a firm favourite. The children returned to school fully inspired to write all about Joan Procter and her favourite gentle giant. Thank you to all the parent volunteers for their assistance on the day.
