Autumn 2 Week 3

Our Weslandia learning came to an end this week with the writing of our newspaper reports. The children recounted the story well in a journalist style and used new grammar aspects. I have added the challenge of using dialogue in their spellings this week to practise the punctuation required.

In maths we have focused on mental strategies for multiplication and division. We have learnt how to manipulate the numbers we use to make them easier to work with.

Our R.E learning has now begun to focus on the season of advent. With their knowledge of Luke as a gospel writer, year 5 considered the importance of Mary and John in the advent readings.

Today, we had a visit from Fitter Futures. The children were asked to create their own exercise that was then recorded for a Year 5 workout. This has been uploaded today and should be available for the children right away. New passwords for the site have been issued and given out today. I hope you enjoy working out as a family!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Week 11

This week was our last week on the story Westlandia. The children have written a recount on a scene from the story. Their writing is wonderful showing their great understanding of the story.

In Gymnastics we made up different sequences with our partners and showed them to the class.

In Maths we have been learning about odd and even numbers. We have been using lots of resources to help us to investigate whether a number is odd or even. We have also learnt a song about Odd Todd and Even Steven to help us.

In Science we have been describing the weather in autumn and

identifying the types of clothes we wear.

We have started to practise our songs for the Christmas Play,

please practise the songs at home.

Have a great weekend.

Weslandia!

Over the last 2 weeks every class in the school has been exploring the book Weslandia by Paul Fleischman illustrated by Kevin Hawkes. The book explores what happens to the main character, Wesley when the summer holiday start! There has been some fantastic writing from every class; the ideas in the book have inspired our budding authors!

We have linked with Cranborne School and Ladbrooke School to plan this project and at the end of the month we shall be sharing the outcomes together. In this way we can work together to develop the teaching and learning of writing for all our pupils.IMG_2854IMG_2857

School Parliament Week

This week we took part in National School Parliament Week. The children used the school parliament resource box to discover how parliament works. Year 5 and 6 were visited by councillor Peter Knell who spoke to the children about local government and the role of the mayor. Year 5 led us in an assembly all about parliament; we then had our own referendum. Should we change the name of our school? The remainers are voting for the school to stay as Pope Paul Catholic Primary School and the leavers are voting for us to become St Paul VI Catholic Primary School! If you haven’t casted your vote there is still a chance on Monday morning!

Autumn 2 Week 2

What a busy week!

Anti- bullying has been the main theme in class this week, with Reception focussing more on how to be a good friend. The children have worked very hard producing posters to tell you how this can be done.

IMG_5047 IMG_5051 IMG_5054 IMG_5059 IMG_5062 IMG_5070 IMG_5261 IMG_5264

They also made friendship bracelets from a range of materials and gave them away to their friends in class.

IMG_5044 IMG_5046

On Tuesday, Reception participated in an Anti-bullying workshop, where they thought about the importance of being part of a team and how important it is to listen to each others’ ideas.

IMG_5159 IMG_5163 IMG_5171 IMG_5177 IMG_5178 IMG_5180 IMG_5203 IMG_5204 IMG_5211

In Maths, the children have continued to focus on shape and problem solving. In small groups, they have been deciding on their own criteria for sorting shapes, according to the shapes’ properties. Using bubble mixture and different shape cutters, the children had fun investigating whether or not the bubble shape changed, according to the shape blown through.

In RE, we have been thinking about preparing for a baby and relating this to how the Catholic church prepares for Christmas, during Advent.

IMG_5217 IMG_5218 IMG_5219 IMG_5220 IMG_5222 IMG_5224 IMG_5225 IMG_5230 IMG_5231 IMG_5240

Today, the children played their own part in deciding the future name of our school, by individually voting.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Week 10

We have had a busy week! This week is Anti Bullying Week and Parliament week. We started by looking at what bullying means and what we should do if we think bullying is happening. We made some posters to show what bullying is. The children took part in a workshop on anti bullying and looked at how bullying makes people feel.

IMG_1207 IMG_1208 IMG_1209 IMG_1210 IMG_1211 IMG_1212 IMG_1213 IMG_1214 IMG_1215 IMG_1216 IMG_1217 IMG_1218 IMG_1219 IMG_1220IMG_1242 IMG_1249 IMG_1250 IMG_1251 IMG_1252 IMG_1253 IMG_1254 IMG_1255 IMG_1256 IMG_1257 IMG_1258 IMG_1259 IMG_1260 IMG_1261 IMG_1262 IMG_1263 IMG_1264

We have continued looking closely at the book Westlandia and  recognised how the character was bullied.  We enjoyed making shelters and musical instruments to engage with the text. The children’s writing has been fantastic!

Autumn 2 Week 2

We have had a wonderful day at Celtic Harmony today, where we learnt how to become a Celtic Warrior.

We had a fantastic time learning how to fire an arrow and solve warrior riddles. The children were great at hunting for clues in the woodlands and proved themselves to be very fierce.

IMG_2910

We also learnt how to weave reeds and how to work together in battle  – we even managed to defeat some wicked Romans! It was also great to hear the Myth of Finn MacCool and the Giant Causeway.

Thank you Miss Lawlor, Mrs Pinto and Mrs Lyons for helping us today – we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

IMG_2887 IMG_2885 IMG_2962 IMG_2961 IMG_2960 IMG_2952 IMG_2953 IMG_2958 IMG_2959 IMG_2951 IMG_2950 IMG_2949 IMG_2948 IMG_2945 IMG_2920 IMG_2929 IMG_2940 IMG_2943 IMG_2919 IMG_2916 IMG_2915 IMG_2914 IMG_2913 IMG_2905 IMG_2906 IMG_2907 IMG_2911 IMG_2904

We have also learnt about the UK Paraliment and what the role of the House of Lords and House of Commons is. We will be voting for or against the schools name change on Monday.

To celebrate anti-bullying week we took part in a workshop about respect and explored how we could make kind choices and respect both ourselves and others.

UK Parliament and Anti Bullying Week

This week we have taken part in two very important national events: UK Parliament Week and Anti bullying week.

For UK Parliament Week, we used the resources sent by the Parliament Education service to understand the structure of Parliament.

IMG_0100 IMG_0101 IMG_0104 IMG_0106 IMG_0107 IMG_0109

In class, Year 5 learnt about what a referendum is and set one up for the school to vote in. The key question was whether we should change our school name to St Paul the VI. All day, the children and staff have been voting. We also opened up the polls to parents at the end of the school day. It will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

IMG_0157 IMG_0158 IMG_0156 IMG_0155 IMG_0143

We were also visited by Councillor Peter Knell and his wife June. It gave the children a chance to ask questions about what is is like to be in local government and hear all about their trip to Buckingham Palace!

IMG_0112 IMG_0110

Today, year 5 led the school assembly to explain what they had learnt and and to try and persuade the votes in the referendum. Well done to all of the children. This assembly was arranged with little time and they had only minutes to practise.

IMG_0136 IMG_0135 IMG_0133 IMG_0131 IMG_0123 IMG_0124 IMG_0129

On Wednesday, we took part in an anti bullying workshop. The children used drama to appreciate what they were good at and thought about what to do if they were bullied.

IMG_0120 IMG_0119 IMG_0118 IMG_0117 IMG_0114 IMG_0115 IMG_0116

With such a busy week, the children have really earned their weekend!

Year 2 Blog Week 9

It has been a very busy week in Year 2. The children have been focusing on the book Weslandia as part of our whole school writing project.IMG_2857

‘Wesley is an outcast from the civilization around him. He’s not into pizza or football or haircuts like the other boys in his school. So, when Wesley has to find a project for the holidays, he has a brilliant idea: he’ll found a civilization of his own – in his back garden!’

IMG_2852

IMG_2853

IMG_2855

The children have engaged in lots of creative learning around the story- creating a model Weslandia for our classroom as well as a life sized Wesley. We will begin our big write next week – watch this space!

This week was UK Parliament week and Year 2 have been learning all about Democracy. The children had great fun using the backdrops and props in the hall.

Home Learning: Spellings wk 2, reading comprehension, handwriting and Mathletics.

Have a peaceful weekend,

Miss Davey

16th November

This week we have focused on our school themes of Anti-Bullying and the UK Parliament.

The children completed some research for homework last weekend on Parliament and from this home learning, they have shown what they can discuss what  the UK Parliament is and what democracy means.  As a class, the children voted for two members to represent Year 4 in our school parliament.  The two children with the highest votes were:  Angelo and Heather.  Congratulations to them on their new positions.

On Thursday, the children had their second drumming session in which they participated with such enthusiasm and today, Friday, it was odd socks day and one in which the children participated with excitement.
Homework this week will be:

Spellings, Reading, Maths (Mathletics) and SPAG online.

Due to my error in programming the Mathletics, the children were not able to gain access to their learning activities.

I have solved the problem (as there had been a difficulty in logging on) and would like them to complete as many of the multiplication (timetables) lessons that have been set for them.  I thank you for your patience with the technical blip that occurred!

PLEASE DO NOT FORGET: we need white contributions for our class hamper box that will be part of the Main Raffle at the Christmas Fayre.  Thank you to the children who have brought items in.

Have a lovely weekend.
