Worms!

This week Reception have been very busy learning about the secret lives of worms. Did you know that a worm has tiny little hairs all over it’s body that help it to move around under the ground? To take a closer look at these little wiggly creatures, the children have been making wormeries, digging around in the soil for worms and observing them under the class hovercam.

On Tuesday, the class watched their Year 6 Reading Partners in their class production of ‘Bugsy Malone’. The children were very excited to see their friends on the stage and were very proud of all of them!

Today was a very busy day, as the class participated in an exciting drama workshop based on the theme of the jungle. Immediately after, they met their new class teacher and then finished the day with a visit to the Year 1 classroom as part of the transition process.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Year 2 Blog Week 34

It has been an action packed week for the Year 2 crew. This week, we have focused on the scourge of the Seven Seas….. PIRATES! The children used plenty of great adjectives to describe these wicked and wily robbers, these outlaws of the oceans. Everyone came to the same conclusion… Never trust a pirate … unless his name is Bobby Shafto. Year 2 have had great fun learning about sea shanties and are in the middle of preparing their performances of Bobby Shafto’s Gone to Sea. Watch this space.IMG_2050

Year 2 have also been looking at measure in maths. The children completed an outdoor measurement maths trail and worked with their Year 3 learning partners to find out different measurements. It was great fun and there was lots of wonderful collaborative learning going on!IMG_2003 IMG_2004 IMG_2006 IMG_2012IMG_2034 IMG_2038 IMG_2040 IMG_2041 IMG_2043 IMG_2044

Year 2 also enjoyed playing some team games on the field. There were wonderful tactics used during our game of rounders. IMG_2000 IMG_2001 IMG_2002

This week we started our transition routines. The children have been reflecting on their time in Year 2 and have written up some of their favourite memories from the year in their Transition books. The children have also been thinking about what they are looking forward to in Year 3. To support the transition to Year 3, Home Learning will be set on our blog pages. See below for the Home Learning for this week.

Year 5 22/6/18

We have been thoroughly entertained this week in Year 5. On Tuesday, we were treated to a dress rehearsal of the Year 6 production. Year 5 were a fabulous audience and I hope they were picking up tips for their turn next year! We also got the chance to see the guitarists perform in a concert. Well done Thomas, Marco and Sara; your practise paid off.

On Thursday, we attended our taster day at Nicholas Breakspear School. We were warmly welcomed and had the chance to experience life in secondary school. The children’s behaviour was exemplary and they were a credit to the school.

Blog week 33

This week, the children have been learning about time and non-fiction text. They enjoyed using the laptops to research facts about tigers. In Science, they carried out an investigation based around the question ‘Do all apples have the same amount of seeds?’ They were surprised by their findings. What do you think?

Year 2 Blog Week 33

This term, in R.E. we are learning all about Discipleship. The children have been thinking about what it means to be a disciple and they have identified everyday disciples at home, at school and in our community. We looked at the calling of the first disciples from the Gospel of St. Mark. The children created a beautiful display for our Sacred Space in our classroom and produced some fantastic retellings of Jesus calling his disciples. IMG_1996

We have continued our learning on our Land Ahoy topic. This week, the children used charcoal to create some impressive Titanic artwork. Everyone enjoyed using the charcoal to create different tones and textures.   IMG_1989 IMG_1990 IMG_1991 IMG_1992 IMG_1993 IMG_1994 IMG_1995

I am really looking forward to seeing all of your Land Ahoy themed projects. I have heard whisperings of hover crafts. pirate ships and treasure islands. For more information on this Home Learning project see blog post 32.            *** Reminder! If you have not handed in your Reading records…. please ensure you bring them in on Monday.

Happy Father’s Day!

Year 6 – 15/06/18

Year 6 have been working hard on narrative writing and on their rehearsals for Bugsy this week. It’s shaping up to be a great performance next week. We’re still in need of the following items, so if you’re able to help with anything, that would be greatly appreciated:

Old-fashioned telephone

Kaleidoscope toy type of thing

Peak Blinder style hats

Striped barber jacket

Boxing gloves

White magician gloves

Small writing desk

Replica hotdog

Lightweight bistro tables

Many thanks

Bugs!

We hope you all had fun at the carnival last weekend; the children were a wonderful sight in their customised t-shirts and head wear! They worked very hard in class creating them.

Our last half term is upon us and our new topic about mini-beasts is well underway! Reception class have been very busy creating bug hotels and searching for mini-beasts around the outside area. They have learnt about the life-cycle of a butterfly and explored the concepts of both halving and symmetry. They have also participated in lots of interesting group discussions about where they would fly to if they were a butterfly. Some ideas included flying to Africa, going up to space and visiting family in other European countries.

In RE this week, we learnt the story of The Good Samaritan and acted it out in groups on the outside stage area.

Next week, we will be learning about worms and other creatures that live under the ground. We will also be focussing on the story ‘Superworm’IMG_1460 IMG_1492 IMG_1493 IMG_1495 IMG_1496 IMG_1500 IMG_1585 IMG_1586 IMG_1588 IMG_1589 IMG_1590 IMG_1591 IMG_1593 IMG_1595 IMG_1596 IMG_1598 IMG_1614 IMG_1616 IMG_1617 IMG_1619 IMG_1620 IMG_1622 IMG_1623 IMG_1626 IMG_1653 IMG_1655 IMG_1664 IMG_1666 IMG_1672 by Julia Donaldson.

IMG_0426 IMG_0430 IMG_0433 IMG_0437 20180614_143923It was wonderful to see so many of you at the carnival on Sunday – the children looked great in their printed t-shirts – we hope you enjoyed seeing our art work at the exhibition.

It was also lovely that so many parents and grandparents joined us for our class Mass. I’m sure you’ll agree that the children read and sang with reverence.

Thank you for supporting Gloria in year 6 by wearing purple and making a donation to JIA.

The children have been combining their ICT and maths skills this week – identifying different types of angles and using QR codes to check their answers and create their own codes.

Have a lovely weekend,

15/06/2018

We had a creative and colourful end to our week as the children came in with their craziest hair creations.  They looked amazing!

IMG_1487 IMG_1488 IMG_1489

Year 5 have been building their understanding of percentages this week. We have been making connections to decimals and fractions to help us calculate percentages of different amounts.

In English, we have been deconstructing texts involving a predator and prey. We have analysed different sentence structures to see how we can create similar effects in our own writing next week.

The children have been learning all about mechanisms with cams and they have now designed their own moving toys. They have considered which cam will suit their design best and we will begin making them next week.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Blog week 32

This week the children have been learning how to identify trees by their leaves and bark. They had lots of fun playing ‘leaf bingo’ and taking bark rubbings from trees. They matched this to an identification sheet and carefully drew each leaf in to their books. Well done to all the children who took part in the phonic challenge – we are so proud of you all! Thank you parents for your support in this. In History, Year 1 have been learning about Queen Elizabeth 1 they took part in role play and hot seating of significant events.
