Science Week

We have had a very exciting week in Year 3 and enjoyed the science week theme; ‘underground.’

Our week started with a trip to Affinity Water, where we learnt how rain water is treated and distributed to millions of households around the UK. We also may pledges to help save water by turning taps off when brushing our teeth and taking short showers.

Later in the week we investigated what causes volcanoes and the forces that occur during an eruption. We used our map skills to locate active volcanoes across the world and built a volcano to erupt!

We were inspired by the book written by Charlotte Gullian and Yuval Zommer, called The Street Beneath My Feet, to create collages of what we might find just below the pavement. Thank you for your help with this parents. I’m sure you will agree that their posters came out really well.

I was extremely pleased with how well the class read, danced and sang in the St Patrick’s Day assembly this morning – well done Y3.

Home Learning this week;

Spelling

Please log on to www.spellingframe.co.uk and select the Year 3 and 4 spellings. Then scroll down to unit 19 and practise the ‘ei’ words. The children are familiar with this website.

Singing

The children also need to learn the words to all the Stations of The Cross songs that were sent home earlier this week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Pringle

Blog week 23

Another very busy week, starting with an unexpected tennis lesson on Wednesday which the children thoroughly enjoyed!

‘The day I got eaten!’ big story write, proved a big hit and their finished story now takes pride of place in our classroom display. Subtraction and learning a new format proved challenging but children were quick to be resourceful in their learning and used a range of equipment to help them. Lastly, on Friday we had the pleasure in watching Year 3’s assembly and the lovely Irish dancers in the hall. This was followed by a celebration morning in class, sharing  understanding of fossils for ‘British Science Week! We also enjoyed a shared breakfast.  A huge thank you to all the parents for your support in making this special for the children and donating to CAFOD.

Year 6 – 16/03/18

Over the past few weeks, Year 6 have been enjoying having the opportunity to have football training with a coach from Arsenal club, which will continue until the end of term. They have been focusing on the ABCS of football: agility, balance, co-ordination and speed. It has been fantastic to see them having so much fun whilst honing their skills. Thank you to Miss Pringle for setting this up.

Well done to everyone who dressed up for our belated World Book Day. The children spent time with their reading partners and later attempted to recreate the front cover of their current reading book in the style of illustrator Quentin Blake – a tricky task!

This week for British Science Week, we visited Affinity Water Treatment Works in Bushey. The children enjoyed going into the treatment plant to learn about the process of water falling as rain to it coming out of our taps to be drunk. They also had a session working in groups to design and construct a water pipe network to supply a town with water. Everyone held their breaths as their systems were filled with water and they waited to see how the water would flow through the town! It was a great challenge and the children showed impressive problem solving skills.

Science week ended with our celebration morning Reptile Challenge, whereby the children had to use just card and glue to construct a 3-dimensional reptile. They certainly rose to the challenge!

Some of the Year 6s represented Pope Paul at Tuesday’s Sports Hall Athletics competition at Dame Alice Owen. Fantastic sportsmanship, encouragement and talent were shown by all and it was a privilege to accompany them.

Year 2 Blog Week 22

Year 2 enjoyed lots of wonderful learning activities this week. Some of highlights: World Book Day, Saracens Rugby and Affinity Water school trip. There were plenty of colourful characters in class on Monday from Little Red Riding Hood to Matilda as well as  Where’s Wally and Hairy McClary. Even David Attenborough made an appearance. It was a wonderful celebration of books! In English we started reading The Tunnel by Anthony Browne and we will be using this story as inspiration for our next big story write! Watch this space! IMG_1413 IMG_1415 IMG_1416 IMG_1417 IMG_1418 IMG_1420
IMG_1421 IMG_1422 IMG_1423The children really enjoyed their rugby session with Saracens Rugby and everyone worked together in a variety of  team building exercises. IMG_1386 IMG_1387 IMG_1388 IMG_1389 IMG_1390 IMG_1391 IMG_1392 IMG_1393 IMG_1394 IMG_1399 IMG_1400 IMG_1401 IMG_1402 IMG_1403 IMG_1404 IMG_1405

To end the week we visited Affinity Water, where we learnt about both pond creatures and minibeasts and how these creatures have adapted to their habitats. We also looked at some basic food chains and  gained an appreciation of how all living things in our local ecosystem are connected.IMG_0193 IMG_0196

Fairtrade News!

Well done to Daniel, Cassia, Liam, James, Grace and Asti, our Fairtrade group, for organising our Fairtrade Assembly and Banana and Biscuit Bar this week. We raised £128.15 for Cafod, our Lenten charity! We are proud to be the only Fairtrade School in Potters Bar and one of only a few in Hertfordshire. The group created a fabulous assembly which was enjoyed by the whole school.

Year 5 9/03/18

This week, we have been enjoying the warmer weather and were finally able to wear our World Book day costumes! The children looked great and got really involved in the learning. We focused on characters by role playing, writing descriptions and making top trumps.

In English, we have continued our class text about Odysseus. We created drama to help us write rich dialogue and improved our comprehension through performance reading. We are developing a much better understanding of our hero by identifying his strengths and weaknesses.

IMG_0933 IMG_0932 IMG_0931 IMG_0930 IMG_0928 IMG_0927 IMG_0926 IMG_0925 IMG_0924 IMG_0923 IMG_0944 IMG_0943 IMG_0942 IMG_0938 IMG_0939 IMG_0940 IMG_0941

In maths, we have continued our learning on fractions. We have been adding, subtracting and multiplying them, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of strategies for doing so.

Today we listened to a fantastic assembly by year 6 about fair trade. During fair trade fortnight, it is important to remind ourselves of its life changing impact. The children were insightful when debating how profits of bananas should be shared. It was also wonderful to see them linking their understanding to Lent.

Well done to the chess team for their efforts at the competition this week. Francesco, Alessandro, Thomas, Anthony and Toju represented the school brilliantly and were only 1 point from a medal.

Friday 9th March

This week has been one that started off full of colour from all the costumes that were worn for World Book Day!

A big thank you to the parents who helped the children dress up in such a wonderful array of costumes portraying characters from literature. As the cold snowy weather delayed our  special day, it was particularly impressive  with the variety of costumes that the children came in. Many staff joined in the fun dressing up as  some of their favourite characters too.

In RE, we looked at the importance of Fairtrade and found out about Patrick,  a Tea farmer from Kenya.  Through guided reading, the children found out more about Fairtrade and the importance of a fair wage.  We also have learnt more about Lent through: Praying, Fasting and Giving.

On Wednesday, we took part in the Year 3 and 4 Mass at church.  The children who read and took up the offertory gifts did so with such reverence and confidence.  The singing also made the mass memorable for all.  Well done to the class.

We have also been busy with our Sports this week: rugby, dance and swimming….the links with maths and rugby is making the lesson even more interesting.

It has been a pleasure for myself and Ms Varga to meet with you over the last few weeks to discuss your child’s progress.  We hope that you found the consultations informative.

Today (Friday) Mrs Burgess continued her work on Sculpting with willow but this this  time making spheres.

Homework has been handed out and as  usual, I will be available at Homework Club on Monday and Tuesday (Lunchtime).

Have a wonderful weekend.
