Week 9: 10th November

Preparing the Altar……

IMG_0224 IMG_0210 IMG_0209 IMG_0208 IMG_0207 IMG_0206 IMG_0205 IMG_0202 IMG_0201 IMG_0198 IMG_0194IMG_0223This week, we have continued with our English work on writing an informal letter using  a story about Asterix and Obelix as the stimulus.  The children have worked really hard on this work and we are very proud of them putting into practice the grammar work we have been doing  to encourage them to move their writing on.

In RE the children read about Remembrance Sunday and wrote their own prayers for those soldiers who died in the war and one for a member of their own family.  In our class worship, the children shared these prayers with each other.  We revisited what the Eucharist means to us and watched what vestments the priest wears at Mass.  After learning more about the altar, the children had the opportunity to prepare an altar or put the altar away.  I was so impressed by how reverent they were at doing this.

In Maths, we have continued with our work on addition by ‘thinking 100’.  The children have followed the work well and we’ll be doing worded problems on this to ensure that we can apply our understanding.

In PE we have continued with our focus on dribbling.

Next week, we are doing a whole school writing focus on a book called ‘Traction Man!’  As part of this weeks homework, the children have been asked to bring in to school on Monday a toy that they play with or have played with and be ready to discuss what adventures they have had with their toy.

Have a lovely weekend.

Remember, if your child has any problems with the homework, we have homework club on Monday at lunch-time.

Week 9

Year 5 have been getting green fingered this week by planting our bulbs in the class garden. I look forward to seeing the results in the spring.

IMG_0375 IMG_0384

As it is the month of Holy Souls, we have also been remembering those who have passed away. Many children have made bookmarks, or written the names of loved ones on our prayer list.

In R.E we have been learning about a prayer form called Lectio Divinia. The children have been able to see how this is a deeper form of prayer and have discussed the parts.

In computing, we have continued to build our knowledge of algorithms. We have been programming sprites to draw shapes, ensuring we are using the most efficient method to do so.

IMG_0388 IMG_0386 IMG_0387

This week, we have completed our free verse poems about a classroom after school. The children used some beautiful imagery to describe the scene:

‘And the pencils

Like logs

Lay on a blue carpet sea’- Sara

‘On a creamy coloured walls

Hung posters

Overcrowded with work’- Marco

‘Chapter books show off their pages’- Sophia  D

‘Dirty tables were proud of their mess

as they stood

in their favourite spots’- Thomas

‘Vacuums start to hum

The monster has arrived

Objects hide

At the thought of being captured

In its naughty jaws’ – Olivia

Worn out pencils on the floor

like useless logs in a forest’ – Jude

The indignant, dirty windows cried for help

Because they were no longer transparent’ – Toju

Week 8 and 9 Blog

Last week the children engaged in outdoor learning activities. They dug up their flower bed and planted new bulbs in time for Spring. This linked to their science learning – seasonal change and plants. There was lots of discussion about if they planted their bulbs up side down or side ways would they still grow?IMG_8824 IMG_8825 IMG_8826 IMG_8827 IMG_8828 IMG_8829 IMG_8832 IMG_8835

This week the children have been learning all about regrouping numbers to 10 using a whole and two part model. There was lots of discussion based around this and they enjoyed the hands on practical approach opportunity it provided.

IMG_8802 IMG_8803 IMG_8804 IMG_8805 IMG_8805 IMG_8807 IMG_8809 IMG_8812 IMG_8816

In P.E the children have been learning how to roll.

Week 8 Reception Class

This week we began our new topic, ‘Festivals and Celebrations’, with a focus on Diwali.

We learnt how about how Hindu families celebrate Diwali, the festival of light, by going to pray at the temple, lighting special diva lamps, coming together to eat special food and setting off fireworks in the evening. We listened to the story of Rama and Sita and watched film clips about how Hindu families prepare for Diwali

We also learnt about rangoli patterns and had fun creating our own from a wide range of materials.

IMG_6560 IMG_6564 IMG_6568 IMG_6578 IMG_6582 IMG_6583 IMG_6585  IMG_6587 IMG_6586

We made diva lamps from clay.

IMG_6554 IMG_6555 IMG_6556

During circle time, we talked about keeping safe around fireworks and bonfires. We even wrote some safety posters.

IMG_6665 IMG_6670 IMG_6673

Some of the children decided to make a bonfire, complete with a seating area, from the large construction materials outside.

IMG_6667

Other children made fireworks from junk modelling or created pictures using a computer programme.

IMG_6672 IMG_6676 IMG_6677 IMG_6680 IMG_6683 IMG_6685

IMG_6708 IMG_6711 IMG_6714

Finally, we have made a start on getting the flower beds ready for Spring by exploring and then planting bulbs.

Next week we will be learning about Remembrance Sunday.

Have a great weekend,

The Reception Team

November 3rd Week 8

Welcome back everyone.  We have been hearing about the wonderful things you did over the half-term.

This week in school has seen us learning more about similes and how to use them in our writing; learning more about sound through designing our own musical instruments and how we can alter the pitch to make a higher/lower sound; finding out about and understanding one of the most important times in a Jew’s life: Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs; developing estimation to support calculation and many more areas of the curriculum.

Below are some pictures of the class making their instruments using only recycled material……….IMG_0305IMG_0307

On Wednesday, many of the children from the choir went off to participate in the Barnado’s Concert at the Royal Albert Hall and Sofia was one of our three singers who opened the concert with a performance of One Voice.  It was a lovely evening as I was also able to attend in the evening which made me feel very proud of the all the children  who took part.  Well done to all members of the choir who are from Year 4 and a special well done to Sofia who sang so gracefully.

You have received your home learning for this week.  If you have any queries, please pop in to the Monday  lunchtime club and I will assist you with your queries.

Have a lovely weekend.

Autumn 2 in Year 3

This week Y3 have been busy outside, clearing our garden, planting spring bulbs, taking soil samples, looking for worms and designing our class garden! We are looking forward to seeing our daffodils and bluebells appear in the New Year.

IMG_0049 IMG_0053 IMG_0055 IMG_0054 IMG_0057 IMG_0052 IMG_0069 IMG_0070

In science we have tested the permeability of different rocks.

IMG_0075 IMG_0074 IMG_0073 IMG_0072 IMG_0071

We have also been working on mental addition and our 3 x tables. The children have been completing timetable grids each morning and looking for strategies to complete 2 and 3 digit additions mentally.

IMG_0066 IMG_0065 IMG_0063 IMG_0062 IMG_0061

In art we are creating masterpieces for the art exhibition later this month!Fronted adverbials and time conjunctions have been our focus in English – see if you can spot any whilst reading this weekend. Next week we will be writing poems with similes. We’ve also enjoyed indoor athletics in PE and have taken part in many fitter futures activities.

Trip next Tuesday to Celtic Harmony

Please ensure the children are dressed in warm clothes, suitable for being outdoors (wellies or old trainers, tracksuit bottoms and a jumper). They may also wear a stone age costume over the top but it is not compulsory.

Please see below for the children’s reading parts in assembly.

Jamie B

Good morning everyone. Welcome to 3’s assembly, Please join us in

saying our school mission prayer.

Rory

Our assembly today is all about remembering. How good are you at remembering things. Do you ever forget things?

Thomas

I sometimes forget to bring in my PE kit but I always remember when it’s my birthday.

Dejon

I sometimes forget to learn my spellings but I always remember when its pocket money day.

Nathaniel

I sometimes forget to tidy my bedroom but I always remember Christmas.

Finley

I try not to forget to say please and thank you. I try to remember my times tables.

Zachary

I try not to forget to bring in my home learning and I always try to remember to do my best.

Matthew L

Most people find it difficult to remember everything in their busy lives. There are lots of different things we can use to help us remember things.

Patrycja

Important events can be written on a calendar. You can keep important phone numbers in the memory of a mobile phone.

Jake

Post-it notes can remind us of things we need to do. You can record things you have done in a diary.

Emily

Some people tie a knot in a handkerchief to help them remember something. It is said that elephants never forget.

Natalie

Many people write a shopping list so that they don’t forget anything at the supermarket.

Alex

Certificates remind us of our achievements. Photograph albums hold many special memories.

AlexLet’s see how good your memories are. Which animals never forget?Who spoke about mobile phones?

Matthias

What else did Patrycja talk about? What do people take to the supermarket? Well done. You have remembered well.

Angelo

We can all recall special times and experiences. We all have both sad and happy memories. Remembering helps us to learn from the past and to plan for the future. The sharing of memories is an important part of family, school and community life.

Alexis

November is the time of year when we remember all those who sacrificed their lives for us during wars. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War 1.

Tito

At 11am on November 11th 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous fighting. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11th November. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain.

Heather

A national ceremony takes place at the Centotaph in London. There is a big parade attended by members of the Royal Family, the Government and men and women from the armed forces. You will be able to watch this on television on Sunday morning.

Ava

There is usually a 2 minutes silence so that people can remember the brave men and women who died in the First World War, Second World War and in other wars. It is a way of remembering not only past events but also the suffering that war continues to bring to the world today.

Ben

Some will remember heroes; others will remember friends whose lives have been lost. The sharing of memories in this way ensures we never forget those who have gone before.

Matthew S

Remembrance Day is also known as Poppy Day because it is traditional to wear an artificial poppy. These are sold by the Royal British Legion, a charity dedicated to helping war veterans. But why do we wear poppies to remember those who died in wars?

Bella

Some of the worst fighting in World War 1 took place in Flanders, the western part of Belgium. Buildings, roads, trees and natural life simply disappeared. All that was left was a sea of mud.

Megan C

Only one living thing survived – the poppies. These colourful red flowers grew everywhere where the soil had been disturbed. The sea of mud became a sea of red flowers. In class we have sketched and made paper Mache poppies.

Jamie H

The first Poppy Day was held in Britain on 11th November 1921 and raised a lot of money to help soldiers who had been wounded. The poppies are sold by the royal British Legion. This is a charity which looks after ex-service people and their families. Nearly 11 million people in the UK are eligible for support from the Legion today. People as young as 17 can be sent on active service so veterans are often much younger than people realise.

Meaghan S

We will now lead you in our schools act of remembrance. Let us now hold a two minutes silence to remember all those who gave their lives in war. You may like to bow your head, close your eyes or watch our remembrance movie. A bell will ring at the start and finish of the 2 minutes.

Emilia

A poem called For The Fallen is often read aloud during the ceremony. Please read its most famous verse with us: They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

Let us pray.

Heston

Lord God, we thank you for the gift of memories that we can share together. Help us not to forget the feelings of others. May we heal painful memories through kindness and create better, happier memories for tomorrow.  Lord in your mercy hear our prayer.

Aisling

Help us to remember all those who have lost their lives in war. Help those who suffer because of war today. Help those in power bring peace and an end to violence. Amen.

Fiona

We will end by singing. Thank you for taking part in our act of remembrance today. Why not find out what ceremonies are happening where you live this weekend. Buy a poppy Or why not watch the London ceremony on television?

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Miss Pringle

Week 8

Welcome back. I hope that you enjoyed your time as a family over the break. It has been fantastic to hear about all the exciting things the children got up to.

This week in literacy, we began a poetry unit about a city at night. We have been looking at powerful vocabulary and in particular adjectives, verbs and use of personification, simile and metaphor. The children really enjoyed taking part in some readers’ theatre and performed stanzas of ‘Last Night, I saw the city breathing’ by Andrew Fusek Peters.

IMG_0331 IMG_0333 IMG_0334 IMG_0335 IMG_0336 IMG_0337 IMG_0338In numeracy, we began looking at common multiples. We have connected it to other areas of maths and represented them in a range of ways.

IMG_0362 IMG_0344 IMG_0345 IMG_0342

Our computing learning on programming had us thinking about processes this week. We used flow charts to create algorithms for automated control systems. We were also able to create charts for everyday activities, such as making a cup of tea. We discovered they could range from very simple, to more complex.

IMG_0371

In science, we turned our attention to forces. We went outside to see if we could demonstrate some forces.

IMG_0369 IMG_0366 IMG_0363

In our topic learning, we found out about Anglo Saxon village life. We then used this information to create a map of a Saxon village by using natural items found in our playground. See if your child can explain the key features to you.

IMG_0329 IMG_0328 IMG_0327 IMG_0324 IMG_0325 IMG_0326 IMG_0323 IMG_0322 IMG_0321 IMG_0317 IMG_0318 IMG_0320 IMG_0315

In R.E, we have been learning about Judaism. In particular, we have discovered more about Bar and Bat Mitzva. We compared this Jewish rite of passage with the sacrament of confirmation that we studied last half term.

Overall, this first week back has flown by. Not only did we take on a range of learning, but over half of the class represented the school by singing at the Royal Albert Hall. While they were signing their hearts out, the rest of us went to OLSV for All Saints’ Feat Day mass. I’m not sure how we managed to fit it all in a week! The children have been bubbling with excitement today about their weekend firework plans. As a more creative home learning, I have given the children the option of creating a firework poem. It would be great to see them using the poetic features we have discussed this week to describe this wonderfully sensory event.

Family home learning!

Today we dug over our Year 5 garden in preparation for planting on Monday. Many of the children have told me that they have keen gardeners at home and they would like to design it with you. We have some spring bulbs and need a plan for where we should plant them. See the link below to view the selection we have. I look forward to seeing the designs. The theme of the garden is ‘Resurrection’ as they should flower in time for Easter.

Year 2 Blog Week 8

The first week back has flown by! In maths we have started looking at addition and subtraction. The children have been using their number bond facts as well as equipment to solve some tricky missing number problems.

What number bonds do you see? If 4 + 6 = 10…. What else do you know?

In P.E. this week we started gymnastics. The children had great fun on the mats perfecting their forward rolls and their log rolls! There are definitely some talented gymnasts in our midst!

Choir sing at the Royal Albert Hall

DSC_8350DSC_8657

Well done to the choir who sang like angels at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday. We had a wonderful day experiencing singing in a choir with over 1000 children as part of the Barnardo’s Supporters Concert. Thank you to all the parents who supported the choir at the concert and to Mrs Guerin, Mrs Harper, Mrs Theo and Ms Jacobs who accompanied us on the day. Well done to Daniel, Sofia and Olivia who opened the concert with their performance of One Voice. I was a very proud headteacher!

Do have a look at the photos on the choir area of the website.
