And just like that, Year 5 has come to an end 😔It really has flown by, seeming like only a few months ago that you came into my classroom for your transition day, unsure how to feel about the prospect of being in upper Key Stage 2. You really have been a fantastic class to teach – so much enthusiasm, so many individual personalities, and so much care and kindness dictating your daily actions. I wasn’t able to thank you properly at home time today because we were all blubbering messes and I couldn’t string more than 3 words together, but thank you so much for making my job so enjoyable and for giving me a brilliant year. Thank you also for the generous gifts and kind words written; it is really appreciated 💖
It has been a fun-filled final week. The week began with our Mini Police assembly – which you wrote and delivered superbly. Here you all are, being presented with your certificates by the chief inspector.
Yesterday was the Summer Fun Day, which did what it says on the tin. Between the bouncy castle, Nerf guns, sponge throwing, rat splatting, duck hooking and body tattooing, we played the Pirate Game, which was as enjoyable as it was intense! The day ended with a bowlful of tasty treats. Thank you FOPPS for organising such a great day!
Wishing you all a fantastic summer, whether it is relaxed or adventure-filled!
Our week began with a taster day at Nicholas Breakspear School, which was thoroughly enjoyable! After an assembly with headteacher Mr Linnane in the assembly, we had an RE lesson, in which the teacher was blown away with the class’s knowledge of the Bible. RE followed with Science, with was unanimously the highlight of the day; using chromatography, the children uncovered who had stolen the teacher’s chocolate! The day concluded with lunch outside and a Geography lesson about rainforests.
Tuesday was D&T day, for which the whole-school focus was Building a Better World. Our mission was to design and make a sustainable dish. After researching and discussing food miles, water usage and CO2 emissions required for different foods, the children made a lentil salad, which got mixed reviews in the evaluation!
On Wednesday, we were back at Nicholas Breakspear – this time for a Community Mass. With Y4, we joined the Year 7s from NBS and two other Catholic primary schools for Mass followed by a highly enjoyable (and competitive!) rounders tournament.
For both trips this week, the children’s behaviour was impeccable and they left the NBS staff with a very good impression of our school.
Thursday was Transition Day, so the children had the chance to spend some time with Ms Pemberton in their new classroom for next year.
Friday concluded with a wonderful music concert featuring the singers and instrumentalists from Year 5 and 6 – well done to all who performed!
We have also been preparing our Mini Police which will be on Monday at 2:30pm – do come along to see the children be awarded their certificates and hear all about what they’ve learned over the last few weeks.

That’s all for now, so do all have a great weekend and I’ll see you back on Monday for our final week together 😢
The main causes for excitement this week were Sports Day on Wednesday, and Mini Police yesterday.
The children showed brilliant sportsmanship in the Sports Day events: they made sure they tried their best, they cheered their housemates on, and above all they had fun. Well done to all of you!
Yesterday, we had our third Mini Police session. We learnt about road safety, then about the different items PCSOs and police officers carry in their vests. The most exciting part, though, was being able to sit in the police cars and hold/pose with the police equipment!

This has been a special week for Year 5, as we had a class pilgrimage to Aylesford Priory on Wednesday. We were given a tour of the beautiful grounds by Father Jed, one of the five Carmelite Friars that live at the Priory, then had Mass, followed by a picnic lunch on the field. We ended the day with a leadership workshop whereby we thought about the qualities of our house saints and how these qualities could feed into the Y6 leadership roles next year. Thank you to Fr Shaun for organising the trip and for accompanying us along with Lorcan and Miss Hilton.
This afternoon, we continued our Science topic on Earth and Space by modelling the solar system using different fruits to show their relative sizes and distances from the Sun. Here are the fruits (and peppercorn) that we used:
Mercury – peppercorn
Venus – cherry tomato
Earth – cherry tomato
Mars – blueberry
Jupiter – watermelon
Saturn – grapefruit
Uranus – orange
Neptune – apple

This week was Healthy Eating Week. Over the course of the week, we have tasted different flavoured waters each day: strawberry on Tuesday, lemon on Wednesday, lime on Thursday and mint today. We also learnt about wholegrains, then tasted wholewheat wraps and wholegrain cereal, which both proved extremely popular! Today was extra exciting because we tasted a plethora of weird and wonderful fruits. Thank you to everyone that contributed to our fruit bowl – we had a feast! Each child gave each fruit a mark out of 5, which we then turned into an average for each fruit and used the data to draw a bar graph. Have a look at the results!
Yesterday, we combined our recent Art and RE learning to do mixed media paintings of our interpretations of the Kingdom of God. It was a beautiful way to spend a sunny afternoon, and their artwork was fantastic!
Home learning
Your home learning is to design a lorry that inspires people to enjoy healthy, sustainable food.
Your design will be entered into a competition and the prize is having your design used on a real Aldi lorry!
The three winners (one from England, one from Wales, and one from Scotland) will also win a £100 Aldi voucher and an exclusive goody bag of Team GB and ParalympicGB items. The winners’ schools (or a youth groups/community organisation to be agreed with Aldi, Team GB and ParalympicsGB, if the winner is home schooled) will also receive £1,000 in Aldi vouchers to spend on kitchen equipment and produce!
Once you have finalised your design:
draw your design clearly and neatly on to the entry template that was given out today
don’t forget to design the back of the lorry on the back page
Today, we made the most of the sun by continuing with our mixed media landscape unit. We began by putting down a watercolour wash, then when that was dry, we used fine liners to add detail.
Look at some of the fantastic art they produced!
Also this afternoon, we began our new Computing unit on vector drawings, which are digital line and shape pictures.
Yesterday, the Year 5s accompanied the Year 1s as the whole school processed to the church with the Blessed Sacrament; their behaviour was impeccable.
On Tuesday, Year 5 began tennis sessions, which was very enjoyable. As of next week, PE days will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Have a wonderfully sunny weekend – see some of you at the carnival on Sunday!
This week has been Spirituality Week, for which the focus has been Walking with Jesus.
On Monday, the children wrote prayers to Reception prayer partners and enjoyed exchanging the prayer cards with them:
On Tuesday, the class spent time Praying in Colour, which is a beautifully free and visual way to spend time talking to Jesus.
On Wednesday, we went for a sensory nature walk around the school grounds, focusing on the different textures in our natural world, and on the sounds that could be heard around us. It was really peaceful and made us appreciate the variety of interesting textures in God’s creation.
Thursday was an important day for Year 5, as they led the Spirituality Prayer Stations over the course of the day for the younger year groups. This gave them their first proper taste of what Y6 leadership will look like, and I was really proud of how well they took on their roles.
Also this week in Geography, Y5 made models on fold mountains; Mrs McDonald was extremely impressed with the variety of ways the class came up with to demonstrate how fold mountains are formed.

Coronation Fever is definitely upon us! This week, we enjoyed finding out about the royal line of succession, what King Charles’ interests are and how tomorrow’s Coronation will proceed. We discussed what the King’s priorities might be then wrote letters to him. We also made nature Coronation collages to link with His Majesty’s love for the environment.
We also decorated Coronation cookies with the Year 1s, before coming outside and celebrating with the whole school.
Aside from celebrating and learning about the Coronation, we also had a skateboarding session on Wednesday, which was enjoyed by all! The children learnt to jump on and off the skateboard, how to reposition their feet whilst moving on the board, and how to turn the board beneath them! Well done to everyone for giving it a go and especially to those that fell off and got straight back on again! Thank you to Miss Pringle for organising this.
Enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend and I’m looking forward to hearing all about how you celebrated the Coronation when I see you on Tuesday! 👑
