Religious Education

This week we revised what we know about the season of Lent and focused on fasting. The children had great knowledge of what they can choose to fast and learnt that it doesn’t always have to be food related!

 

Mathematics 

Year 1 has been exploring different ways to total the same values and how it is called equality and balance. They enjoyed using the scales to balance their numbers before recording them in number sentences. Mathletics has been set to support this learning.

Year 1 Week 3 06.03.2023

Religious Education

This week we revised what we know about the season of Lent and focused on the act of Prayer. The children had great knowledge of when we pray, how we pray, why we pray and who we can pray too.

Mathematics 

Year 1 have been learning subtraction methods in Maths this week. They have learnt to count back, use a number line, think ten, subtract ones first. These are the methods we used:

The children have enjoyed learning about Jill Murphy’s text ‘The Last Noo-noo’. They worked well in groups to sequence events of the story and liked going on their own ‘Noo-noo’ hunt around the classroom. When they found them they had to use their preposition words to describe where they were found. We tried to collect them all but are predicting we will be still be finding them next week!

Year 1 Spring Term Week 2 w.b. 27th Feb

Religious Education

This week we revised what we know about the season of Lent and focused on the act of Almsgiving.  The children came up with lots of ideas that they can show giving to others. Please ask them about it.

Mathematics 

Year 1 have enjoyed lots of puzzles and problem solving this week based on their addition knowledge.

English

The children produced some fantastic ideas on what the bullies tease Marlon about and his responses.

Spring Term 2 week 1 w.b. 20th February

Religious Education

This week we marked the start of a new season in our Liturgical year; The Season of Lent.

The children learnt that during Lent Catholics reflect and try to grow closer to God and Jesus through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

They made a Lenten promise which they offered up during Friday’s assembly.

Your child has come home with a footprint template for them to make a Lenten promise to keep at home.

Well done to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 for leading their Ash Wednesday service this week.

Mathematics 

Year 1 has been learning addition methods this week. Please see below for the methods taught that you can ask the children about and practise at home.

Next week we will move on to subtraction methods.

English

The children enjoyed learning the poem ‘Silver Speck’ about a mouse and worked hard to gather their ideas to change the poem to be about a squirrel.

We wrote one as a class and then the children chose their favourite ideas to write their own poem about a squirrel.

In Religion Year 1 reflected on the The Beatitudes again and thought about how they can be peacemakers at home, in the classroom and in the playground. They then looked at the life of Mother Teresa and thought about how she lived her life by following The Beatitudes and carrying out God’s work.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”

In Maths year 1 have challenged themselves with lots of odd and even puzzles.

Spring Term Week 3 w.b. 23rd January 2023

In Religion this week Year 1 have been learning about where we and our family all come from. They learnt that on the Feast of the Epiphany, all nations are invited to know God. Year 1 looked at all the different nation flags from our class. We then looked at all the countries that have stars in their flags and reflected on what we can do to shine bright and build a better world. We then decorated a flag from our country for display.

The children were very enthusiastic about our new English text, ‘Where’s my Teddy?’ this week. They worked hard to gather adjectives to describe the characters and worked well to sequence the story into a story map which will help them write their story next week. Story ready by the author:

In Science Year 1 have been using their knowledge to identify and describe different fish, vertebrates, invertebrates and mammals. They worked very hard and next week they will be using their knowledge to classify and group the animals including naming herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

In Maths Year 1 have continued to work hard in understanding tens and ones to make two-digit numbers and have begun to add them together noticing what happens to the tens and ones. They have also been revising their double knowledge and used lots of resources to represent doubles. Next week they will be identifying odd and even numbers and representing them in different ways. Mathletics has been set to support these skills.

Spring Term Week 1 w.b. 9th January 2023

Welcome back!

From next week Year 1 will have P.E. on Tuesday (gymnastics) and Friday (invasion games) both will be in the hall till the weather cheers up!

The children returned with such enthusiasm on Monday and shared lovely tales of their Christmas holidays. The children were very excited to welcome our new pupil, Noah and his family to The Year 1 class on Monday. They have been very kind and welcoming to him this week. We hope he is very happy in our class.
