Reception Week Beginning 3.7. 23

This week has been all about the trip to London Zoo!

On Tuesday, the children were shown video clips about London Zoo and were given maps to look at. In small groups, the children discussed and planned what animals they would like to see. They recorded the information on large pieces of paper and presented it to the rest of the class. It was truly amazing to witness the wonderful team work, oracy skills and the children’s ability to consider one another’s choices. They have come such a long way since the beginning of the year!

The children also took part in a poll where they had to choose five animals from a list. This was recorded in the form of a whole class tally chart and the results were then used to map the route around the zoo. It also meant that everyone got to see at least a couple of their top five choices!

Yesterday, was trip day!

The children were VERY excited, but despite this, their behaviour around the zoo was exemplary; they were true ambassadors of Pope Paul Catholic School! It was a wonderful day!

Amongst many other animals, the class saw: snakes, crocodiles, exotic frogs, reptiles, gorillas, lions, vultures, spiders, a coral reef, tigers, penguins, giant tortoises, meerkats, gibbons, flamingo, otters and monkeys.

A special thank you goes out to Mrs Strange, our Chair of Governors, Mrs Menicou and Mrs Quinn, who all volunteered to support the staff in keeping the children safe and happy on the trip! Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 26.6.23

Another busy week has flown by!

This week, the children have been researching lots about spiders and learning about their habitats and the many different ways that they catch their prey. The class enjoyed listening to the story Aaaarrgghh Spider! by Lydia Monks. You can hear the story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5df388jmToo

Reception discussed whether or not a spider would make a good pet and thought about the things that they are frightened of.

The highlight of the week for Reception was their first ever Sports Day. The children were absolutely fantastic, showing great support towards one another, excellent behaviour and wonderful listening skills. Their teachers were very proud of them!

Inspired by the different events from the day, many of the children have been making up their own sports activities for their friends to complete ever since. A particular favourite has been creating different obstacle courses.

Today we were treated to a sneak preview of the Year 6 end of year production and it was absolutely fantastic!! No photos, as we don’t want to spoil the surprise for the Year 6 parents and rest of the school!

Next week, we are really looking forward to our trip to London Zoo. Please remember to pack a water bottle, provide a sun hat and apply sun cream to keep your child safe from the sun. Every child will need a back pack to carry their own water bottle and lunch (even if they are having a school packed lunch).

Finally, don’t forget that there is a school INSET day on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 19.6.23

This week, the children have continued to learn about the importance of loving neighbours, through the story of The Good Samaritan.

Love of neighbour involves the whole of creation. It means working for a just society. It includes love for the poor which results in active support of our neighbours locally and globally. Love of neighbour means concern for truth and justice in this service of the Common Good.

The children discussed who their neighbours are. How are they the same or different? How do they help us? How do we help them?

They then had fun role-playing, painting, retelling and rewriting the story themselves.

In English, the children have been focussing their learning around the themes in the book, The Bad-Tempered Ladybird by Eric Carle.

Again, they enjoyed acting out the story through role-play and small world.

They also talked and wrote about the things that make them feel bad-tempered!

On Wednesday, the school played host to some very exciting visitors- some children from Beijing in China. They popped into Reception class to say hello to the children and to look around the classroom and outside learning environment.

Please remember to supply your child with a sun hat, water bottle and apply sun cream before school, in order to keep them safe and protected from the sun. The warm weather has been wonderful and the children are really enjoying their time outdoors at the moment.

Thank you!

Enjoy the weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 12.6.23

Another week has flown by!

This week, Reception have taken part in the national Healthy Eating Week, alongside the rest of the school.

This year’s Healthy Eating Week had five themes to help everyone eat well: focus on fibre, get at least five day, vary your protein, stay hydrated and reduce food waste!

The children have learnt about the importance of hydration (especially important in hot weather like this week!) and enjoyed sampling the different flavoured water every day. The children tried fresh orange, lemon, lime, mint and strawberry water over the course of the week, with strawberry water being the definite favourite!

The children learnt about the importance of eating fruit, vegetables and fibre. They made their own healthy plates and absolutely loved tasting the exotic fruit that they brought in; thank you all so much for you generosity! We still have some left over which we will eat on Monday!

In English this week, we have been focussing on the story The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson.

The class were shown a short clip from the current television show ‘Spy in the Ocean’ and absolutely loved it! Many children went home and watched it with their families after. It airs on a Sunday, early evening, or you can watch it on iPlayer here:

In maths sessions, the children have been learning about addition and all the associated maths language that goes with it. They had fun making their own addition game and sharing it with their learning partner!

For one of our transition into Year 1 sessions, Reception went into their new classroom on Tuesday afternoon, with Ms Pemberton and Ms Gymer, where they had a maths lesson and a story. The children also had a chance to talk about anything that they were feeling worried about. They will be doing lots of transition sessions over the forthcoming weeks, in order to get them ready for Year 1.

Today, the children were organised into their houses for the very first time and had a sprinting event practise on the field in preparation for sports day!

We will be practising different events next week too. If your child normally wears shoes rather than black trainers to school, please supply some suitable footwear that they can change into. If you child normally wears a trainer type shoe, you do not need to send additional footwear in.

Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend,

The Reception Team

Welcome back! We hope you have had a restful half term break.

This week, the children began their new topic, The Hidden World in our Garden, starting with a focus on the life cycle of a butterfly.

The very Hungry Caterpillar Balloon | Birthday Party | The Balloon WorksIn English, the children heard the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and had lots of fun creating their own ‘Very Hungry ….’ stories. They also made their own life cycle diagrams, wrote about where they would fly to if they were a butterfly and worked as teams to sequence the story.

Some children also enjoyed creating their own caterpillars and butterflies from different materials.

The maths focus this week has been on learning about odd and even numbers. One activity that the class enjoyed especially, was an odd and even number challenge against the class adults. They then had to work together as a whole class and arrange themselves into a giant number line!

On Thursday, Reception took part in the Blessed Sacrament Procession, with the rest of the school. As usual, they made their teachers very proud with their prayerfulness and amazing behaviour!

Next week is Healthy Eating Week. We kindly ask that every child brings in a piece of fruit that they have never tried before. We would like to cut up the different fruits and let the children sample them, as part of a focus activity. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Finally, we warmly welcome Jude and his family to the Reception class and the Pope Paul Catholic School community. We hope you will be very happy!

I am looking forward to seeing you all at the carnival on Sunday. It is going to be hot, hot, hot so don’t forget to wear sun cream and bring lots of water. see you then!

Please note- I am having a problem attaching photos from this week. I will keep on trying and hopefully add them on at a later date. So sorry!

Reception Week Beginning 26.5.23

Pentecost and the Holy Spirit - Jen Norton Art StudioThis week, Reception have been learning about Pentecost- when Christians all over the world celebrate the birth of the Church, which was over 2,000 years ago! In class the children have been focussing on the related themes of birthdays, air, fire and water.

Reception learnt about fire safety and the role of the fire service in an emergency situation. They also had fun in the firestation role-play area that they helped to create.

The class created kites and planes and made up dances with ribbons, to explore air and wind. They also made birthday cards, invitations and party lists.

On Wednesday after school, many of our Reception families stayed for the international Pentecost celebration. It was so wonderful to see so many of you there!

Yesterday, the class joined the rest of the school in the May Procession in honour of Our Lady. The children did so well following the other classes and laying down their flowers.

Today, the children celebrated the feast of St Paul VI, with a special mass, followed by ice lollies in the sunshine. It was a lovely way to end another half term!

Wishing you all a very happy half term break,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 15.5.23

This week, Reception have joined the rest of the school in participating in Spirituality Week. The focus for this week has been Walking with Jesus.

On Monday, the class wrote prayers for the children in Year 5 and gave them to them in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, the children took part in a beautiful, prayerful activity called Praying in Colour. We have never seen the Reception children so quiet and reflective!

On Wednesday, the class went on a walk around the field. They were encouraged to be silent and ‘notice’ God’s creation all around them. The children were asked: What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you see? The class finished with some time in the peace garden, where they were delighted to find that a pair of blue tits had built their nest in one of the bird boxes. They were amazed to see how frequently they brought back food for their young!

On Thursday, Reception took part in the wonderful prayer stations led by Year 5.

On Friday, the class took part in a guided meditation sessions, focussed on meeting Jesus. The children were so impressive doing this and one child even fell asleep!

We are looking forward to seeing you at the Pentecost Celebration next week!

Have a lovely weekend,

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 8.5.23

Following the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, the children were keen to talk about the different ways they had celebrated, and share what they had learnt or observed during the televised ceremony.  Reception continued their learning about the coronation throughout the week, making collages, carriages, castles and congratulation cards. In English, they enjoyed discussing and writing about what they would do if they were a king or queen for the day!

In their maths learning this week, Reception have been developing their spatial reasoning skills by exploring and representing patterns, making simple shape arrangements and creating exact replicas of 2D and 3D pictures and models made by their partner. They also had fun making and playing with tangrams!

International Pentecost Celebration

We hope you will be able to join us after school on Wednesday 24th May 3pm-5pm, for a very special international Pentecost celebration. Please see the newsletter for more information.

Have a lovely weekend,

Reception Week Beginning 1.5.23

Despite it being a very short week, Reception have managed to pack a lot of learning in!

Inspired by the week’s story focus ‘Whatever Next!’ by Jill Murphy, the children decided to make a new spaceship role play area. They worked hard to make their spaceship shiny and made signs to help the astronauts keeps safe when in flight. They had lots of fun playing inside it, once it was finished!

The children also made planet mobiles to create a more authentic space feel and wrote lists of things they needed to take with them into space. They enjoyed using the space rocket small world play too.

As part of our learning about King Charles III’s coronation, the children drew their own portraits of him and learnt that Queen Elizabeth II was Charles III’s mother. They also learnt that he was the eldest child, so the law determines that he is the next king. They learnt about the ceremony itself and how the king will travel to and from his coronation tomorrow. The children were very excited to share their home learning and plan a coronation party!

Today, the children made their own St Edward’s royal crowns and celebrated the coronation by decorating and eating coronation biscuits with their Year 6 reading partner. They then had a very exciting time in the big playground with the rest of the school, enjoying an ice lolly and waving their union jack flags.

Enjoy the extended bank holiday weekend and if you are celebrating the coronation of King Charles III, have a fabulous time!

The Reception Team

Reception Week Beginning 24.4.23

Reception have had lots of fun learning about St George and the Dragon this week. Some of the children had been to a St George’s Day parade or other celebration on Sunday and were able to articulate what they knew already about him.

The class enjoyed acting out the story, making props and creating their own dragons from a variety of media. They also had fun thinking and writing about how they would get rid of a dragon from the village.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to pop along to the drop-in reading session on Tuesday. We look forward to seeing you again next Tuesday.

Finally, thank you for all the lovely birthday wishes this morning; it was a wonderful way to start the day!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

Ms Pemberton and the Reception Team
